On another note. Just read the AFL website on Essendons* 3rd pick. Is that DODORO not the most conceited, smarmy, big-head going around? Can't stand his self promoting bs. He's talking like he's the messiah and the kid has played 200 games and won three Brownlows. What a flog..

Really happy with our draft. Obviously I was hoping for other players but really happy with every player we picked and was happy enough that we overlooked others which I can never recall feeling that way.
One thing I wish we really done was delist a couple more players and not picked up Smedts. Their are a couple of players that went undrafted that I would much prefer on our list then players that we have.

Thanks to Kerr being available at our last, we're going in with a 40/4 set-up next year.

2 rookies on Monday and we're done.
Wonder how we're gauging the washup for the rookie draft with Galluci, Gowers in the wings? Any chance we could delist further (Buckley can count himself lucky to have re-signed during the week) with the draft taken into account and cut the losses with the next in-line on next years cull if we value available?
May be unfortunate for Galluci come Monday.

Agree with all of that except the bit about Kerr being good at ground level. That's a weakness of his. That and his slow change of direction/agility which worries me about how he'd go defensively. He's relatively quick running in straight lines so hopefully with good delivery he can still be serviceable as a second or third key forward. Worth the risk with a pick in the 60s. Reminds me a little bit of Luke Mitchell we drafted in 2010 with a pick in the 40s. Just feel like people have been a little wrapped up in the romanticism of the Kerr pick and because we've been longing for a gun forward since Fevola. Would have preferred Sproule with that pick though.

Overall though I think we managed to balance taking best available with drafting for needs to achieve a great outcome.
There were a few snapped goals in Kerr's highlights which were impressive. I'll take your word on it being an area for improvement though.

No-one else to de-list unless we're prepared to pay players out.
I can't see that coming about but it is possible, although wouldn't be particularly savoury.

I wanted SPS at pick 5 (6) and I wanted Zac Fisher at 25 (27), so I'm obviously stoked.

When I saw SPS over 12 months ago, I thought to myself "he's the most talented junior I've seen" and I figured pick 1 would be required to land him ... I've NEVER wanted a young player more, and started talking to my mates about him and bringing their attention to him.. At the same time, I really didn't want another spoon, but I was prepared to go through it. Then the Bombers copped their penalties and I figured we'd never have the chance. Seriously disappointed that he'd likely head that way and under those circumstances. As the season progressed and we won a few games, while the Dockers were struggling and looking likely to finish below us, I gave us no chance whatsoever. If the Bombers overlooked him, there would be no way he'd get past the Dockers.

As it panned out, injuries played their part, the Dockers traded out of their pick before ours, the stars aligned and we landed Sam. Having been keeping a close eye on him for some time, I am absolutely thrilled. I'm not only thrilled by the quality of footballer he is, I am thrilled by his character and that we have picked up an indigenous player from Halls Creek. I can't pin-point the feeling - it just warms my heart to have picked an indigenous lad at our first pick. The greatest aspect of our game, in my mind, is the indigenous representation - it exceeds indigenous representation in the general workforce, and is something that is mostly embraced as a wonderful part of our game. On this board, SPS has been embraced by nearly all. "Flight risk", "outside silk", "icing on the cake" have all been used as reasons by a small proportion who didn't want to take the "risk" on SPS. They seem to disregard that he has made more sacrifice than any of the players I'm aware of to get where he is today. Apparently, all the non-indigenous players around our pick carry no risk whatsoever - drafting is an easy game.

I don't deny that I am a huge supporter of indigenous players. It goes beyond the fact that they dominate representation in my list of "most skilled players in the comp". Footy has the potential to make a much greater impact on society than just for the fans seeking premierships - I want indigenous players in the AFL because I want indigenous leaders, stars, idols. The more there are succeeding in our comp, the more likely young indigenous people are (men and women now) to have found an idol, to have found someone in whose footsteps they want to follow or to have found someone who proved that following a dream can turn into reality. At some point in our lives, whether it's a quote from Mark Twain, Gandhi or the Dalai Lama, or an achievement by Obama, Federer or someone in our local community, we've all been inspired by individuals. The more indigenous success stories in the AFL, the more individuals there are to bring hope to young indigenous people. As an avid AFL fan, that is something to be proud of. Already, Sam has spoken about wanting to be an inspiration to people back home. Amazing!! Tear to the eye stuff... I'm tipping that it won't be long before he's in our leadership group.

I am so happy where Carlton are at culturally, at the moment. We needed massive change, and we've got it. Having a somewhat close connection to Bolton (although I think it's obvious from the outside), I know we are creating a wonderful culture. A culture that encourages learning and respect for yourself and others. I feel that Bolts is going to view SPS as just that tiny bit more special than other players, because of his history and the sacrifices he's made to get where he is.

So, welcome aboard Sam. You are my favourite Carlton player already! So proud to be a Carlton person today and going forward, but equally stoked that so many clubs have picked up indigenous kids with their early selections.

Beautiful sentiments mate.

Thanks Coach and once again apologies to Mrs Coach. For the record I do not consider myself fat!
You idiot... It definitely wasn't you, the guy wasn't wearing a ill fitting Carlton jumper from the 80's....

He's fed the footy or it's spilled out the back in those instances. Will seize on opportunities though.

Well said , I think we are all going along fir the ride with SPS.

It looks a cracker of a draft for the Blues !
Interested in others thoughts on adding to our our Inside Mids going forward , as i thought we were looking at a few this draft...
The only pick that has me baffled was our # 61 pick Tom Williamson DEF ( where we could have snaffled Dylan Clarke # 63 MID )who in my opinion would have been a better fit... anyone else feel the same ?

GO BLUES !

Went for bottom aged pace and kicking skill believing he will transition into the midfield but maintain versatility.

I'm with you, but apparently there is a question mark on Clarke's kicking.

Thing that stands out to me is Run and Speed

Seems to have been a clear strategy

And you'd assume sound kicking skills too given Bolts comes from Haw

But the proof will be in the pudding

Chosing a short in stature mid at 27 is interesting but then Marc Murphy is short and went at 1 and as we all know Daniel has shown you can be short and thrive in modern footy

Well said! Cannot wait for SPS to lineup in Navy Blue (surely #5 at this point) and become a fast fan-favourite, bamboozling us with his tricks and talent, not to mention his dogged determination.

Our first pick in 2015 and 2016 could not be more different in many ways, but their drive and sacrifices to make it at this level will see them both become key parts of #17

Gee I'm bloody happy right now.

Question for those in the know; how ready are each of these guys to play next season? Can we, for instance, realistically expect to see Kerr get any games? I know SPS looks like he's ready to go but I'd be interested to know how close all the other guys are to being "ready to go". So who could we expect to see next year, either as a regular performer or a late-season cameo, and who should we be patient on?

Across a few comparisons of Drafts & Ratings, seems SPS was a lock, Fisher was slightly early, Macreadie a steal, Polson out of nowhere, Williamson about right at the back end of the draft, and Kerr a major steal (which explains Fisher, Polson and Williamson in particular).
Good homework by SOS and the team. This one on paper has to be given a rating of A on potential with the gamble on Kerr being available at the end.

Early days I know, but even so, it looks to have been a great move to have done that trade with Hawthorn which effectively landed us Macreadie, Williamson and Kerr.

Really surprised GWS didn't take Macreadie.....and then overlooked Sproule, also
A little extra from the Marchbank trade perhaps??

Projection is different than ranking though. Knightmare ranked Fisher close to top 10 but predicted nobody would bite early due to height. He actually blew out by consensus when he was rated much higher when the footy had actually finished.

Not me.

Even before yesterday i felt that Williamson is a potential AFL player and Dylan Clarke is a potential VFL player.

Very happy with getting the one we did and passing on the one we did.
