Arr0w what are your thoughts on our draft haul?

Thought we did pretty well, a lot of value with our later picks.

After SPS and Fisher, both of who I rate, none of the other kids were are reach, infact sliders given their quality. another great draft period

As a trade and draft period combined, we have certainly added some real class and competative footballers. The only question mark I have is why we didnt select Clarke in the 4th round. The kid is a bull. I hope I am wrong, but can see a lot of clubs having egg on their face
Disposal suspect is general consensus I'm reading

The excitement and optimism is fantastic after a draft. Just dont go back and look at any pre 2015 horror draft efforts (excluding Cripps). It will deflate. Good luck to all our new players. Knuckle down and commit to being our super draft.

No real misses last night. In a perfect world Hayward would have lasted to 27 but that was never likely. Had GWS matched on Macreadie (which we expected) we would have taken Ed Phillips. He nearly made it through to 59 before StKilda got in under us at 56 so he's the only one that "got away"

Thing that stands out to me is Run and Speed

Seems to have been a clear strategy

And you'd assume sound kicking skills too given Bolts comes from Haw

But the proof will be in the pudding

Chosing a short in stature mid at 27 is interesting but then Marc Murphy is short and went at 1 and as we all know Daniel has shown you can be short and thrive in modern footy

I agree, physically he doesn't look as though he would be able to knock my great grandmother off her feet, yet it appears as though ball winning, contested work and tackling are just some of his strengths.

Any hints at what we're looking for in the rookie draft? A ruck maybe?

Projection is different than ranking though. Knightmare ranked Fisher close to top 10 but predicted nobody would bite early due to height. He actually blew out by consensus when he was rated much higher when the footy had actually finished.

I could be wrong, but watching the draft last night, I thought that Fox Footy had Kerr ranked in the late 20's and Fisher in the late 30's.

Got to give it to the Richmond poster who at the time of our pick for Macreadie, said some thing like:

"Carlton now taking GWS players before they've even played for GWS"

TBF, that's actually pretty funny coming from a Richmond supporter. ;)

Clarke no doubt will be a solid player, can't question his endeavour and competitiveness but that's all I see him as is a solid player. Very limited ceiling from what I saw of him. Think over the next couple of years he will have an impact early days but then taper off long term.

The other blokes we chose in the 4th round could be anything. If we finally have our player development area of the club intact, I can see Williamson and Polsen having far greater outputs long term than Clarke.

Question for those in the know; how ready are each of these guys to play next season? Can we, for instance, realistically expect to see Kerr get any games? I know SPS looks like he's ready to go but I'd be interested to know how close all the other guys are to being "ready to go". So who could we expect to see next year, either as a regular performer or a late-season cameo, and who should we be patient on?

I think SPS will get games. Don't think there is any need to really rush the others though. I think Macreadie and Kerr could get opportunities if they work hard enough.

I wanted SPS at pick 5 (6) and I wanted Zac Fisher at 25 (27), so I'm obviously stoked.

When I saw SPS over 12 months ago, I thought to myself "he's the most talented junior I've seen" and I figured pick 1 would be required to land him ... I've NEVER wanted a young player more, and started talking to my mates about him and bringing their attention to him.. At the same time, I really didn't want another spoon, but I was prepared to go through it. Then the Bombers copped their penalties and I figured we'd never have the chance. Seriously disappointed that he'd likely head that way and under those circumstances. As the season progressed and we won a few games, while the Dockers were struggling and looking likely to finish below us, I gave us no chance whatsoever. If the Bombers overlooked him, there would be no way he'd get past the Dockers.

As it panned out, injuries played their part, the Dockers traded out of their pick before ours, the stars aligned and we landed Sam. Having been keeping a close eye on him for some time, I am absolutely thrilled. I'm not only thrilled by the quality of footballer he is, I am thrilled by his character and that we have picked up an indigenous player from Halls Creek. I can't pin-point the feeling - it just warms my heart to have picked an indigenous lad at our first pick. The greatest aspect of our game, in my mind, is the indigenous representation - it exceeds indigenous representation in the general workforce, and is something that is mostly embraced as a wonderful part of our game. On this board, SPS has been embraced by nearly all. "Flight risk", "outside silk", "icing on the cake" have all been used as reasons by a small proportion who didn't want to take the "risk" on SPS. They seem to disregard that he has made more sacrifice than any of the players I'm aware of to get where he is today. Apparently, all the non-indigenous players around our pick carry no risk whatsoever - drafting is an easy game.

I don't deny that I am a huge supporter of indigenous players. It goes beyond the fact that they dominate representation in my list of "most skilled players in the comp". Footy has the potential to make a much greater impact on society than just for the fans seeking premierships - I want indigenous players in the AFL because I want indigenous leaders, stars, idols. The more there are succeeding in our comp, the more likely young indigenous people are (men and women now) to have found an idol, to have found someone in whose footsteps they want to follow or to have found someone who proved that following a dream can turn into reality. At some point in our lives, whether it's a quote from Mark Twain, Gandhi or the Dalai Lama, or an achievement by Obama, Federer or someone in our local community, we've all been inspired by individuals. The more indigenous success stories in the AFL, the more individuals there are to bring hope to young indigenous people. As an avid AFL fan, that is something to be proud of. Already, Sam has spoken about wanting to be an inspiration to people back home. Amazing!! Tear to the eye stuff... I'm tipping that it won't be long before he's in our leadership group.

I am so happy where Carlton are at culturally, at the moment. We needed massive change, and we've got it. Having a somewhat close connection to Bolton (although I think it's obvious from the outside), I know we are creating a wonderful culture. A culture that encourages learning and respect for yourself and others. I feel that Bolts is going to view SPS as just that tiny bit more special than other players, because of his history and the sacrifices he's made to get where he is.

So, welcome aboard Sam. You are my favourite Carlton player already! So proud to be a Carlton person today and going forward, but equally stoked that so many clubs have picked up indigenous kids with their early selections.

Well said mate. Today is a better day already having read your post.

Disclaimer: I love our picks this year.

But, if even one of our 3 or 4 later picks becomes a 150-200+ game player, I will carve a statue of SOS in my backyard and pay tribute at dawn every day for the remainder of my life.

Such is the level of expectation for picks above 30 and our inability to convert on them in recent times.

if 2 or more make it?

I haven't decided yet.

No-one else to de-list unless we're prepared to pay players out.
I can't see that coming about but it is possible, although wouldn't be particularly savoury.
And against our recent MO with paying out contracts (new regime won't leave us hamstrung with doubtful AFL players with extended contracts), was just if the pool carried over more than expected and the limited spots available with both Gowers & Galluci hopeful to be re-rookied.

Absolutely stoked with our picks
Sps was always a lock we may of went a little early on Fisher but im more than happy with him Macreadie is a steal and in time will be our full back Williamson and polson look to both hav great run, pace and skill and Kerr could possibly be the the new fev that we all would love to see again but the one thing that i took from all the highlights they all hav a apretite for the contest and the ball which really pleases me. No more watching the likes of Everitt with huge talent not at least look like they want the ball and will to bust there gut to get it or stop the opposition getting it

Brilliant post.

Will be interesting to see how early - or if - this crop of kids get games next year. My completely uneducated guesses would be:

SPS - potential round 1
Fisher - potential round 1
Macreadie - mid year possibility
Polson - development year
Williamson - development year
Kerr - development year / last couple of rounds maybe.

Fisher and Polson look like a question of physical preparedness, and that will be a challenge given the delayed start to pre-season and the AFLPA requirements of a 75% workload. Expect them to be a slow burn at this point.

I can't see Kerr playing this year unless we're down to choosing between him, Rowe and Jones for a spot up forward.

Williamson is a dark horse because of Byrne's status, and Macreadie has a real shot if his form permits.

I think we will be having a disappointing year if Jones is getting games in 2017. I expect he will be one of the first cut next year.

That my friend is about post of the decade.

Certainly followed through on Trigg's hybrid Midfielders prediction. SPS will be a good pick up. From the AA it seemed that he is fully switched on as opposed to some other indigenous players like Yarran that do some amazing things and then seem too casual.

Was unsure of Polson when we picked him, but watching his highlights he seems to do that same things at TAC as in the more numerous examples of school footy. Has the tools to be a quick goal kicking midfielder.

Williamson looks like great could he be the running HBF we were thinking of getting with Scrimshaw at a cheaper price.

Kerr is a great low risk pick. Doesn't look like he needs to get much of the ball to make an impact. Would be strange to have a forward who is a good kick. Maybe we could nominate him as our designated kicker.

I am happy as it has addressed our needs. If you look at the Pies they drafted 2 FSs they didn't really need (and probably wouldn't have wanted if not for their surname) but have gained 2 talls players and lost 6 this trade/draft period so far. They wouldn't want injuries to Grundy or Reid next season

Not me.

Even before yesterday i felt that Williamson is a potential AFL player and Dylan Clarke is a potential VFL player.

Very happy with getting the one we did and passing on the one we did.

If williamson comes on like we all hope your going to witness something very special, the kid is a jet and only 17, has everything at his disposal.
