Very possible that his preference to stay in Melbourne had a bit to do with them not matching rather than his poor form this year. His poor form was probably a by-product of him being away from his true home and thus a little unhappy.

Either way, he's back in Melbourne and at the club he grew up supporting (as is Polson and Kerr) so here's hoping GWS rue letting him go.

That info probably puts a bit of context to his year this year and maybe why GWS passed on him. His form completely dropped this year after being moved to the King's School in Sydney. It is a pure rugby school. Maybe the footyhead young country kid found it hard to adjust and enjoy his footy.

He says he's rapt to be coming to Melbourne to live, over Sydney. Maybe he let GWS know this, or maybe GWS didn't need to be told but just saw it in the kid. Welfare and development department at GWS would be all over this with their young players and Academy kids.

Getting very hard to pick our best 22 now.
One thing I am looking forward to is seeing Pickett and SPS play together. Should be very exciting.

Pickett Sumner Boekhorst Cuningham SPS Fisher all of a sudden we have some real speed on our list.
This is pointing to us playing a very exciting brand of footy.

I think the telltale signs were there TW. Maybe when he started wearing his Carlton footy jumper to training, GWS realised they'd lost him.

Don't completely agree. If you count last year's draft with this year's & GWS boys we have picked up last year & this year, then we have really done equivalent to three drafts. We can now start to cherry pick class. It's all about development now. Really, 2018 should see great win loss improvement.

Our midfield is seriously shallow even with the addition of this year's draftees.

Gibbs will likely be gone, Murphy getting too old and no real talent after Cripps and SPS. We're going to need 2 top 10 picks at the very least and grab the 2 best available mids.

If Gibbs still wants out, then off he goes for Crows 1st and a 2nd rounder. I'd be using those 2 picks on best available mids as well.

It might also not be a stretch to think that GWS may have let their "old mate" know they wouldn't match in exchange for taking some salary cap off their hands.

Agree, but FA agents will be the way to go have a real crack at Fyfe or Martin and settle midfield for a while , either one toghther with Cripps will decimate opposition, just image SPS, Pickett ,Murphy Fisher Williamson Sumner Beokhurst , feeding off those two monsters.
In the 2017 & 2018 trade periods we'll have plenty of maneuverability especially if we trade Gibbs and after another and final big list clean out.
Our 1st pick will probably be a top 6 again, secure a very good quality KPF if we trade Gibbs and receive a 10 to 15 pick from the Crows, I'd go for a quality Ruckman too, there will plenty of good tall timber, we must add to stocks.
Go Blues

The takeover of GWS by Richmond nuffies and the attempt to corner us into losing Gibbs to secure Marchbank suggests that the special relationship is over.

Two years in a row we have 100% nailed our draft.
I've been on BF for ages I can't remember a time when the majority of us have been very pleased with our haul at the draft.
When you look at all the kids/ players we've brought in via trades & drafts in the last two years - they all scream exciting upside! With their growth - team selection will be harder by the week :-)

Agree we still need more class & a couple of more Mids, but most of the work has been done in 2 years instead of 3 years. Plowman, Summer, Phillips, Marchbank & Pickett is equivalent to a draft year. Next year we also fix our player payment issues.

It appears Bolton can coach, SOS has a great eye & contacts. So what we need also is Blues supporters to buy memberships so our footy department is well resourced so we can develop players to their full potential

I wanted SPS at pick 5 (6) and I wanted Zac Fisher at 25 (27), so I'm obviously stoked.

When I saw SPS over 12 months ago, I thought to myself "he's the most talented junior I've seen" and I figured pick 1 would be required to land him ... I've NEVER wanted a young player more, and started talking to my mates about him and bringing their attention to him.. At the same time, I really didn't want another spoon, but I was prepared to go through it. Then the Bombers copped their penalties and I figured we'd never have the chance. Seriously disappointed that he'd likely head that way and under those circumstances. As the season progressed and we won a few games, while the Dockers were struggling and looking likely to finish below us, I gave us no chance whatsoever. If the Bombers overlooked him, there would be no way he'd get past the Dockers.

As it panned out, injuries played their part, the Dockers traded out of their pick before ours, the stars aligned and we landed Sam. Having been keeping a close eye on him for some time, I am absolutely thrilled. I'm not only thrilled by the quality of footballer he is, I am thrilled by his character and that we have picked up an indigenous player from Halls Creek. I can't pin-point the feeling - it just warms my heart to have picked an indigenous lad at our first pick. The greatest aspect of our game, in my mind, is the indigenous representation - it exceeds indigenous representation in the general workforce, and is something that is mostly embraced as a wonderful part of our game. On this board, SPS has been embraced by nearly all. "Flight risk", "outside silk", "icing on the cake" have all been used as reasons by a small proportion who didn't want to take the "risk" on SPS. They seem to disregard that he has made more sacrifice than any of the players I'm aware of to get where he is today. Apparently, all the non-indigenous players around our pick carry no risk whatsoever - drafting is an easy game.

I don't deny that I am a huge supporter of indigenous players. It goes beyond the fact that they dominate representation in my list of "most skilled players in the comp". Footy has the potential to make a much greater impact on society than just for the fans seeking premierships - I want indigenous players in the AFL because I want indigenous leaders, stars, idols. The more there are succeeding in our comp, the more likely young indigenous people are (men and women now) to have found an idol, to have found someone in whose footsteps they want to follow or to have found someone who proved that following a dream can turn into reality. At some point in our lives, whether it's a quote from Mark Twain, Gandhi or the Dalai Lama, or an achievement by Obama, Federer or someone in our local community, we've all been inspired by individuals. The more indigenous success stories in the AFL, the more individuals there are to bring hope to young indigenous people. As an avid AFL fan, that is something to be proud of. Already, Sam has spoken about wanting to be an inspiration to people back home. Amazing!! Tear to the eye stuff... I'm tipping that it won't be long before he's in our leadership group.

I am so happy where Carlton are at culturally, at the moment. We needed massive change, and we've got it. Having a somewhat close connection to Bolton (although I think it's obvious from the outside), I know we are creating a wonderful culture. A culture that encourages learning and respect for yourself and others. I feel that Bolts is going to view SPS as just that tiny bit more special than other players, because of his history and the sacrifices he's made to get where he is.

So, welcome aboard Sam. You are my favourite Carlton player already! So proud to be a Carlton person today and going forward, but equally stoked that so many clubs have picked up indigenous kids with their early selections.
Can this be short-listed along with Kofe Anan's effort for POTY please? Rare that a post transcends this place into magnificence quite like this one.

What do people think SOS's plan is in regards to all these defenders we've drafted or traded for over the pat two years. Not that i have an issue with it i think the back 50 is the most important part to get right but realistically we can only play 6. Is his thinking that defenders make good forwards or is his hope grooming these defenders for currency in trades later on?
