will we need to upgrade ROB this year to retain him?

how might that effect our draft strategy? Might be of greater concern next year, I'm sure Beech, Greenwood and Keath will all be gunning hard for a spot.

Three picks need to be taken in the draft. Lowds for ROB seems done. That leaves two. Greenwood and Keath haven't played a game and don't come under our cap so that's really the slimmest chance of effecting senior players this year. Shaw will need to play this year and show something as will Grigg.

Rucks are tough because you want to have good quality young guy/s developing in the twos. You want them to potentially replace your number 1 ruck and be good enough to be decent coverage while they are still developing. Problem is the better they are and the longer the no. 1 carries on, the more likely the younger guy is to take up opportunity elsewhere.

Hypothetically ROB comes good but is still below Jacobs in the coming years. He then gets poached by a club who's rucks haven't turned out and then Jacobs retires/form drops away. You then have to try and poach a ruck from a club who are in the same situation you were. It's like a frustrating and perpetual cycle but I don't think there's any way around it unless you are a 'destination' club and you know the poaching strategy will always pay off.

Either way for the crows I believe we will have to persist with ROB as he does look extremely promising. You just have to hope the timing is right and if not, get your poach on!

The ROB dilemma is gonna hot up from next year onwards.

I was watching him very closely on the weekend to form an opinion as to whether he is a 'ruck only' option or whether he could legitimately pinch hit in other positions. I was pleasantly surprised by his mobility and skill at ground level despite his awkward 'knock-knee' style. I think if Jenkins got injured he could come in if required and do a decent job as a more traditional deep forward/2R.

Frontrunners in the early testing of the Victorian TAC boys.....love to draft Jarrod Berry but likely gone before our pick....

http://www.foxsportspulse.com/assoc...20-0-0-0&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=41701624

On Saturday March 12, over 550 TAC Cup players were put through their paces as part of the annual TAC Cup Fitness Testing Day.

AFL Victoria, with the assistance of Rookie Me, tested each of the players across four different stations - 20 metre sprint, agility, beep test plus jumps (vertical & running).

See some of the top results in each category for the day - more details on the testing and a full photo gallery will follow.

20 metre sprint: Ben Ronke – Calder Cannons 2.829

Agility: Jarrod Berry – North Ballarat Rebels 7.804

Vertical jump: Bailey Morrish – Dandenong Stingrays 81cm

Running Vertical jump (left): Brodie Romensky – Western Jets 96cm

Running Vertical jump (right): Josh Hannon – Eastern Ranges 96cm

Beep test: Travis Bindley Gippsland Power / Jake Bradley - Northern Knights / Lachlan Huppatz – North Ballarat Rebels 16.02

I think Keath is well worth a punt as a KPD at this point. Our only real need for best 22 is a couple of line breaking inside mids.
That's the thing though, line breaking inside mids are rare as hens teeth..(quality ones).
I'm fairly sure Milera will develop into more of an inside/outside player instead of a complete outside mid, he's skinny and he's 18 but I've never seen him shirk once, he puts his body on the line always... He'll develop some inside work I'm sure of it.
Then there's Atkins... If we can get this kid to bulk up a little more plus include a more inside game he'll absolutely kill teams because of his lateral movement and that elite leg that he's got to find targets.

I rekon we've got our premiership squad, they just need games played experience.

Skippos what do you know about Milera that is playing for Glenelg U18s? Had some BOGs and bags of goals from what I can see.

Honestly - very little. I'm hoping that I'll be doing something in Glenelg every second saturday which will free me up to go and watch him; usually glenelg games are ones I rarely get to.

Daniel Venables sounds like the type of bloke we want. Can win the contested ball, has some great bust speed out of a contest, has good disposal and is a good overhead mark.

God, there's some prospects who I really like in this draft, though. Jarrod Berry, Jordan Galluci, Hugh McCluggage, Venables, Dylan Clarke, Pat Kerr, Luke Strnadica all sound like they have the skillsets to succeed at our club.

Another Rebels bloke, of course... :P

Would love Berry, looking at his highlights he seems to be good defensively and offensively. Perfect player to put in our defence to replace Cheney.

I could easily see Berry playing midfield as he develops.....you want a pure mid, check out Warrnambool lad Hugh McCluggage.....and yes he's Rebel too!

See the article by ESPN and Big Footy's own Knightmare aka Christopher Doerre who now has a weekly gig on ESPN for those interested in following his insightful looks at the young draftees.

Under Trigg we would have avoided Hugh McCluggage...... The excess baggage bill would have cut into the SANFL dividend ;P

skippos, whats your thoughts (if any) on Tom Matsoulidis and Hayward out of north Adelaides u18's? (not sure how to properly tag people in comments)

Same as Milera, at this stage of the season my assessment is based on what I saw last year. For the first couple of months I take a broad view and try and note down any noteworthy players but at one game a week most often it's tough to see everyone (and then watching 44 players it's often tough to note down elite traits until I start tracking 6-8 per game). Now that you've mentioned them I'll make sure to observe next time I see them and give some feedback.

Yep, want McCluggage too. This draft is looking great, one of the best in recent years... so far, at least :p

Retire: Thompson Jaensch VanBerlo
Delist: Lowden Grigg
Trade Bait: Henderson Lyons
No Trade Value: CEY Shaw Otten (1 year "dead man walking" deals)

Promotion: Beech OBrien
Re Rookie: Hunter Ramsay

Should give us 3 draft picks:
Jamie Hampton - Outside, Line Breaker
Ben Jarman - Inside Smart Small
Jordan Sweet - Big tap ruckman

Considering our queue of fringe players, there might be scope to pick up draft picks at the trade table. I have no ill feelings towards Ivan Maric or Chris Knights wanting to go to a club that would give them a regular AFL game and I think we're in a position again where we might have a couple of kids wanting to find a club that will give them far more opportunities to play AFL. I'm actually surprised Lyons has stuck around so despite our situation with draft selections, I predict that given the current climate we'll see at least one trade that nets us at least 1 extra draft pick. Maybe more.
Good post.

We have strong depth. By the end of the season, we will need to make a call to move on fringe players that have been on our list for a few years who we think have close to peaked to other sides who may have a need for their services. Even if it's to bring in say 3rd round picks.

It's healthy to have a small turnover of our list.

Can't understand people calling for us needing more defenders,. Back six of Hartigan, Talia, Brown, Laird, Lever, Seedsman/Smith/Hampton should serve us well for years to come.. Throw in Doedee who from his tapes (and last weeks SANFL game) looks like a ripper.... Focus solely on midfielders
