Agreed. Just watched the All stars game and Taranto looks great. Body looks ready and has significant linking and outside skills. Can mark and goal! Loving Florent as well. SPP rocked it early but seemed to tire. Taranto or Brodie for mine.

I think he will deliver the footy well and score, but I worry about how much he will actually get to the outside at AFL level, and whether his quick hand and sidestep alone are enough for him to get the ball out.

He needs a lot of work on his first steps and agility to be a menace in traffic, which is why I don't want us using 5 on him. I can see GC scooping him up with pick 8.

I've been trying to get off the fence with who we should pick.

I'm thinking Ainsworth and brodie will be taken by pick 5. So I'm left choosing between SPS and Taranto. I'm finding it a very difficult choice because l can see how both could become very good players.

What l keep coming back to when thinking about these two is kicking. When l watch Taranto l feel very unsure about the quality of his disposal. He might become a strong inside player who doesn't rely as much on his kicking. I feel like l need to see more footage of him hitting targets. Everything else l like about him and in many ways he's better suited than to Carlton than SPS at this stage of list development.

SPS is all class. Great poise and skill. Makes me think of Burgoyne. We are all concerned that he just end up as a half forward a bit like Walters at freo. I see more Burgoyne than Walters. At Afl level l think the quality of his touches will really stand out. His first couple of years will be as a half forward but as his endurance builds and his body becomes stronger he will move into the midfield. I actually think he could play a similar role to Gibbs in that he won't be the inside midfielder but he won't just play on the outside either. The big bonus he has over Gibbs though is his speed.

The only attributes l would want to feel extra sure about regarding SPS is his endurance and competitiveness. I would want to be confident he will run all day.

What might be driving my personal focus on kicking is having watched so many terrible kicks play for Carlton in the last 10 years. I couldn't handle watching a high draft pick butcher the ball. I wonder if Bolton is going to place an emphasis on kicking as per hawthorn. Will ball use be king.

I'm going to stump for SPS at 5.

Sweet. I like Brodie anyway. Just watch TAC cup final and he has a touch of Kennedy from Swans about him. Seems a really deep draft class this year.

Regardless of who we get at 5, I'm hopeful that we can grab Zac Fisher at 25. I reckon that's about the mark for him, and the other names we'd really want (SPP, Venables, Drew etc.) will probably be gone by then. Reminds me a bit of Dahlhaus - one of those smaller mid/fwds who attack the ball and the ball-carrier all day long.

Once you get past Pick 20 it's always going to be a struggle to find players with Elite qualities though. What stands out to me is his tank and his aggression, and when grabbing players from the second round onwards I'd like to see us go for the ones with the attitude and intensity to develop at AFL level, rather than a kid with good athletic qualities but questionable work-rate.

Brodie for me because he seems ready to go Rnd 1. Will be a good chop out for Cripps allowing Murphy/Gibbs to run free of the contest thus better delivery to our fwds. Still wouldn't mind Taranto looks exciting and he's a goal kicking mid would be nice to get as a finisher but I think we need players to help at and in at the coal face.

Once you get past Pick 20 it's always going to be a struggle to find players with Elite qualities though. What stands out to me is his tank and his aggression, and when grabbing players from the second round onwards I'd like to see us go for the ones with the attitude and intensity to develop at AFL level, rather than a kid with good athletic qualities but questionable work-rate.

There are 40 players in this draft who are clearly above Fisher, check out a phantom or two if you'd like some names.

We take inside mids.
We take Brodie if we can.

Hopefully gandaal that era will never be repeated and should never come into consideration at pick 5.
Irrespective of media and forum hype , we'll select football skills, nous and good application as best criteria for our new champion.

I've voted for Brodie. I think we need quality workers to help out Cripps, so we can use the skills of Murph and Gibbs more on the outside. Plus someone described him as playing like Sloane. I like how he goes about it - even if he's from Adelaide clown club.

Not entirely sure what they mean by hybrid mid, but if he's taking grabs in the forward line, seems to me that he and Cripps swapping down there, could be a good complementary combination.

Going back to look at some more games and players....

SOS and gang have a difficult job. Be lots of homework going on in the list management bunker.

They didn't select Boekhorst because he was ready made. They selected him because they wanted outside run and thought he was one of the top 5 players in that draft.

Quality on ballers are a very rare breed, thence hybrid.
Basically something is missing from being a complete midfielder, players competent for a quarter or so won't win a game. Unless they have X factor.
We a need a skilled on baller with nous , X factor , good application and endurance.
That's what Silvagni needs to look for, any shortfalls and we'll be disappointed.
Not easy almost impossible but he can reduce the risks as much as possibilite that's the best he can do.

Arent those attributes of all round ok, the same criticisms of Gresham before the draft. In fact in many ways there are a lot of parallels between Gresham and Fisher. Two players that do nothing really outstanding yet do everything pretty well.

I think your being far too dismissive of Fisher. One of the best players of the championships who wins his own ball, has good skills and very good decision making and knows how to read the play. Once again much like Gresham.

If he has got very good endurance and good agility l think he could be a smart smaller midfielder/half forward who is clean with the ball and makes excellent decisions.

Sometimes those that project as potentially elite are also the bigger risk. No problem picking up just a solid player at 5 if we are more confident that he'll be a consistent long term player for us, and can make an impact sooner. Either way we'll get a talented player.

This perception that our first priority, pick 5, should be someone to help Cripps. I take it, that you are all happy with the forward line/outside run/line breakers/elite disposal players we have?

I am sure WC have played in the finals in the last 2 years, with a squad that has more talent than us on every line, yet they only had one dedicated inside mid in Priddis. Shuey/Sheed play inside/outside, similar to Gibbs/Murphy.

How about we just take the best long term elite footballer at pick 5, as I am sure every area need more work

Yeah. Brodie was big time in that game.
If he had of kicked straight he could have got Murry over the line.
Even more impressive considering he went off with a broken nose halfway through the 2nd.

I beg to differ, I don't want guys like Vlastuin types at pick 5. He is a solid 200 gamer, surely we can set the bar higher than that. Trust me at 5, there are a couple of options that will be A graders, why set the bar at a B grader
