DRAFT prospect Sam Powell-Pepper's power and tenacity shone as Western Australia claimed a 61-point win over Vic Country at Domain Stadium on Sunday.

Powell-Pepper got a taste of things as a defender during last year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships but showed his development in the opening round of this season's carnival with three goals and 15 disposals from the midfield.

The 18-year-old, who is a member of the NAB AFL Academy, threw himself at the ball with courage, attacked each contest with physicality and also showed his forward sense with some dynamic movement around goal.

WA had a number of strong performers in the 19.11 (125) to 10.4 (64) win, which was built on an even group of contributors through the midfield.

Zac Fisher was important with 17 disposals, eight clearances and a goal, while midfielders Matt Guelfi (19 touches, six clearances and a goal) and Stan Wright (two goals from 18 disposals) were prominent.

Tall forward Luke Strnadica booted four goals, and West Coast father-son prospect Jake Waterman worked hard in attack but was inaccurate around goal, kicking 1.5.

Possible early draft pick Hugh McCluggage was Vic Country's most consistent player across the game, gathering 27 disposals through the midfield and again exhibiting his class and poise in traffic.

Joe Atley, the younger brother of North Melbourne half-back Shaun, was solid with 22 disposals and eight tackles, while Tom Jok (20 disposals) and Will Brodie (16) also tried hard in the midfield.

Country key forward Josh Battle threatened to take the game away from Western Australia with a first-half purple patch, with the Dandenong Stingrays prospect kicking three goals in the last three minutes of the first term and a fourth one minute into the second quarter.

That haul included a freakish kick-off-the-ground goal from the pocket, with the hard-working and clever 192cm forward offering a difficult match-up for Western Australia.

But Western Australia was able to steady in the second term to take a nine-point lead into the main change, after Shai Bolton showed his class near goal by converting a running shot.

The small forward adds some genuine excitement to this year's draft pool with his pace and creativity, and finished the game with 11 disposals and two goals.

Myles Poholke's second goal of the third term saw Vic Country get within four points at the 20-minute mark of the quarter, before Western Australia booted three goals in the final two minutes of the term to break clear.

A goal in the opening 30 seconds of the final term to Powell-Pepper (his third of the contest) all but put the game out of reach for Vic Country, who went through last year's carnival undefeated.

They steamrolled them thereafter, booting eight goals for the term to Vic Country's one to run away with the comprehensive win. Western Australia will meet fellow round one winners South Australia next Sunday at AAMI Stadium, with Vic Country to take on Vic Metro on Monday, June 13.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA 4.1 8.4 12.8 19.11 (125)

Powell-Pepper could be that burst/powerful midfielder that we're after?

When I've seen him live, I wasn't super impressed . but WA did get thrashed

Today they won big though, and he played well. I'm not too sure about him given his disposal isn't a strong point as we just recruited Dunkley and our work inside is outstanding at the moment. I still think another half back would be great as well as some more forward depth.

If Berry gets to our pick, I'll go nuts

It would be unexpected but then I didn't expect Collins to get to us either

Henry is a name to look out for, a strong athletic background & versatile player that plays as a tall forward but he has been shifted up into the midfield as well

Yeah I would be interested in Henry for sure, I have also voiced my interest in McGrath. I reckon he fits what we're after perfectly. I think someone like Henry would be great for us with the way we move the ball and like to throw players around.

McGrath, Taranto, Junker, Henry are the ones I'm most looking out for at the moment from the Vic sides. Don't know about the interstate players yet except the AFL academy kids.

Interesting to see what improvement Tom Jok can show as a 19yo.

A Key Position Player had 29 touches on the weekend. I know that the TAC is weaker with a lot of the Vic Country and Metro players not playing but still, what the...

EDIT: And this isn't the first time this has happened he had 24 touches earlier in the year too. I find it good when a u18 KPP gets high teens in touches, this is well and truly got me interested.

Well, go on, who was it?

Well, go on, who was it?

Cooper Jones (194cm, 78kg || DOB: 25/11/98 || Bendigo Pioneers)

Needs to put on some serious weight so he'd be a late pick. With that late B'day and how he hasn't filled out wouldn't be surprised if he had a growth spurt.

http://www.starweekly.com.au/sports/northern-knights-stick-to-the-task-and-grab-a-win/

Persistence was the key for the Northern Knights as they recorded their second win of the TAC Cup season, beating Western Jets by 33 points.

Not much separated the sides in the first half but the Knights attacked in the third quarter and opened up a 23-point lead.

They then held on comfortably when the Jets came at them in the last quarter and they ran out winners 13.9 (87)-7.12 (54).

Knights coach Andrew Shakespeare said it was the first time this season the side had won all four quarters.

“It was really good for them to stick to their guns, although there were some structural and skill areas they need to improve and adapt to,” Shakespeare said.

“The message we tried to instill in them was that teams could have the same in talent and ability, but it’s about who works together and persists for the longest.”

Shakespeare said he was pleased with how his side responded when the Jets applied the pressure in the final quarter.

“We were vulnerable,” he said,

“We got a bit flaky early in the last but everyone rallied round and got the job done.”

The coach was full of praise for his leadership group, especially captain Mason Blakey.

“They were an extension of the coaching group and were brilliant on the field,” he said.

“Mason was restricted to 50 per cent game time because of his Vic Metro commitments, but his leadership on the field and on the bench was sensational.”

Patrick Lipinski was best on ground.

Shakespeare said Lipinski was one player AFL recruiters should have a look at come draft time.

“He has stepped up week after week and is a leader,” he said.

“He has played 10 TAC Cup games and is a topend player with the ability to learn and grow.

“I have no doubt he has the attributes that will attract recruiters. Once they interview him they’ll fall in love with him.”

James Hewson was the star in front of goal for the Knights, kicking five majors, even though he wasn’t originally named for the match.

“He has bided his time and worked hard on the track” Shakespeare said.

“He was called up on Friday afternoon and to come in and have impact he had was really good.”

The TAC Cup has a bye this weekend, but three players will play with Vic Metro at the National Championships.

Patrick Naish and Luke Bunker join Mason Blakey in the final squad.

“I’m confident each of them will really stand out and shine,” Shakespeare said.
