Drew played in the champs game too, I wonder why he played on back to back days.
If Guthrie is anything like his brother I'd like some of that.

So given our list is fairly rounded for the most part, do we think Dal will start drafting for needs or go for best available at our picks?

best available at the national draft
Use FA or trade for needs & take risks on needs based players at the rookie draft

IF we are going to draft a KPF this year, why not get two? They can be more developmental, as we have time and won't have a high pick soon to draft or potentially trade for one.
There could be options rounds 2/3/4.
As much as I want one now, developing two for 3-4 years maybe our better option.
Early pick to focus on either elite forward entry player OR HBF to develop.

He drafts for a mix of the two. He definitely took some needs based picks in the last draft and traded to the appropriate place in the draft to do so. Late draft will always be best available.

Next year is looking like a very deep draft with a few good tall forwards. I'm more focised on us getting our midfield class, rucks and mid/small goal kickers this year.
Hey Wizard17 , Dav1d , whoever else, what are your current rankings on ruckmen for us specifically?

English
Ladhams
Sweet
Goddard
Meek
Olango

I would say Ladhams and English would probably suit our style fairly well with Goddard fairly well performed at this stage. Meek is interesting and I'd like to see him produce a little more first. Sweet is an option as well. Hard to rank them until after the champs.

Also replacing the leadership of Moz, Murph and Boyd in the back line has to be done. Wood will take up some of that but I'd like one or two more players with really good leadershipp traits down there.

Hence why I've been talking about Mason Blakey a fair bit lately. He is capable of winning contested footy like every smaller player on our list, has good disposal and very good agility.

Maybe we could trade for a finger pointer. I feel like Adams will be able to be a bit of a general down back as he becomes more comfortable at AFL level. I think you're right in that is an area we can build on but I think it'll come with age for those already on the list as well. There won't be a huge leadership void down back after a retirement or two. I'd rather replace the talent level first.

Mason is one who I'd be looking at around the second round. If he can play as many AFL games as his uncle we'd be laughing.

We have a lot of young leaders coming through but having as many as possible is a good thing and of course they need to have genuine talent too but having many of them leader types means you aren't relying too much on a few players on the ground to show some leadership like say Richmond.

Ever noticed when older players are traded to a club, they list something that they can offer their new club is leadership, I don't think its as big of an ingredient for success as the media likes to make out imo

I don't agree with this Leadership doesn't come with age you're either born with it or you aren't.

A lot of our younger players are capable in this area imo. I just like targeting the better players that have the capability of providing off and on field leadership. You can see that most of our players are capable in this area (Moz, Murph, Boyd, Bont, Rough, Wood, Dunks, Libba, Wallis, Dahl). We have taken players like Goodes and Adcock in recent times as rookies to help our kids on and off the field.

We seem to like having it in spades.

I think it lifts training standards, competition levels and on field communication.
Our style of play is not natural. It requires zoning back and off opponents, running angles and being accountable when others make mistakes. It requires a lot of communication and confidence in your teammates.

I was saying that it can alternatively come as a player matures
I may have a different idea of what a leadership is, but I don't think what I said was unreasonable
Plenty of players have said in the past that they needed to mature to become the players that they are today & often these players are are referred to as been leaders, so you can't say that these players were born to lead

I would not be surprised if the future leaders of our back line are already part of our current list

There are some things that can been learned but their are some things that can't. There are what I call natural leaders who you can spot at junior level then there are players who learn some of the skills after they are drafted.

As you said we have some already some young leaders but I still think we should get as many leaders as possible on our list (of course if they fit in talent/list balance wise)
