Go to Wagga and there are tonnes who follow AFL.
Not so many GWS supporters though
I'm sure the locals see it as AFL/GWS stealing their kids.

Most of these kids have been in the giants academy for 5 years, but in a general sense Albury will be rightly be taken away from the giants in coming weeks as it is for the most part afl heartland. However the Riverina is more of a divided sporting landscape with afl being the stronger code in some areas while league stronger in other areas of the Riverina with Barrett/Breust families a key example of that with Trent Barrett a former league star, Luke Breust a gun at the Hawks, Jake Barrett recently on the Giants list, and recently another cousin was signed by Parramatta.

But that said its probably best to take the conversation over to

Agree with you 100% and to add as well rating players from a younger draft age is so much harder than American sports where they have a few more years in the college system before they make it. to NFL/NBA etc.
They rate the kids from year 9 onwards. But as you would expect there is a lot of variation and movement from year 9 to year 12. And even from year 12 to the end of their college freshman year.

A friend of mine was a part of liverpools junior academy when he was younger and has stayed involved with football. His opinion is that in the world of football if you aren't a complete player by 12 years old you won't make it. You need all the ball skills, heading skills and basic understanding of play by 12 or you're done.

Wouldn't be surprised if GWS match all bids in the first round. Looks like they'll lose their first pick next year anyway, so they won't care how far back it gets pushed.

I have mate, I also happen to follow the draft coverage of several other sports. If you actually followed them too I wonder how you would not realise that it's night and day in comparison to make such a post as this.[/QUOTE]
Of course it's night and day, and I explained why. $$$

You've got a population of near 400 million with one major football code. Here, we've got 3 major football codes and 25 million.

Pretty simple to understand that there just isnt the money in sports media here to follow school footy closely.

As for the phantom drafts. There's no difference between what Twomey and Anderson do compared to their USA counterparts.

Both here and the USA, draft pundits just do big boards until the draft order is set. After that, you'll start seeing early mock drafts, but even then, the more reputable and serious sites don't do mocks until very late because they wait to get as much accurate info as possible.

And then you've got this year, where it's a very even draft, and clubs are playing things close.

Again, if you had genuinely followed this year from the beginning, and actually had an understanding of the Australian sports and media landscape, you wouldn't have made such an ill informed comment.

AFL is a compromised rort, look no further then gws to see this
Do u think we will beat you for the first time in 6 years next year?
Eagles played in premiership in there 5th year with a state side..Hopefully we are only a year behind you and a year ahead of the Crows.Unfortunately our win /loss of 36/76 is a long way behind yours and other expansion sides though..

Heres to the Afl getting it right. We can dream of our win/loss ratio matching the Eagles, Crows and Power after 10 years.

Should be a close call for finals played by 2021 though.

Have u heard of Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills?

Afl can easily fine them in points that must come from a particular round or earlier.

It's easy for the afl to make up a penalty that penalises them equally regardless of their deficit.

Am i the only one that wants the AFL to scratch all academies? Lets just go back to the draft with just picks and no bidding system, no team should have any rights to a player. Thats just not a fair system.

It's got to be one or the other. That is, all clubs have academies or zones or nothing.

I personally like zones, it promotes loyalty and attachment to a club. My dad grew up in a Port Adelaide zone and it's why my family goes for Port, I'm sure there are thousands of similar stories in Victoria and around Australia.

Kids grow up in a certain club zone and as more and more lads play for that club, more and more locals/friends/relatives of that player support that club. Shouldn't mean they have too, both player and clubs would have to be happy (similar to father/son rule).

I'm not sure how a draft would work. That would be a negative, the draft may become obsolete or vastly scaled down.

Dividing up Australia among the clubs would be a fun exercise!

Jye Bolton does anyone know if he will be taken in the national draft or rookie draft? Would love to see the hawks take a punt on him.
Also can Jake Barrett be taken in the national draft? would also like hawthorn to draft him.

Exactly and then scrap the 20% discount. GWS already have a huge leg up, why should they get quality youngsters for less than everyone else has to pay?
Yep and if a kid decides he prefers his development to be completed in the TAC Cup, then the academy club misses out first dibs. The kid can decide who he wants to play for. Stay in the academy program, get to that club. Move out of the program and into the elite U18 talent pathway, you go into the open draft.

It's up to the academy club to convince the kid their academy program is better than the TAC Cup.

Long gone before the Hawks pick. Maybe Saints will use the pick the hawks gifted them.

Yes. Grundy was ready to go and rated top 3 until about a week or so before the draft when clubs suddenly got cold feet over drafting a ruckman early. English as a project player, has been the subject of debate for weeks and weeks though. Fairly different situations.

The fact Grundy tanked some interviews helped seal his fate and get him where he needed to go.

Where he needed to go? Turn it up. You're trying to imply that a South Australian with no ties or support for Collingwood, tanked his interviews to get there?

Andre pls. I did find it funny that he asked GWS why he would want to play for a manufactured club with no history or soul though :D

If they were raised in england and followed football and started playing that much later they wouldnt have made it.
