A friend of mine was a part of liverpools junior academy when he was younger and has stayed involved with football. His opinion is that in the world of football if you aren't a complete player by 12 years old you won't make it. You need all the ball skills, heading skills and basic understanding of play by 12 or you're done.

For soccer thats fine, when you can be the best in the world at 19.
In Aussie rules that simply never happens.

In Aussie Rules you cant tell about a player til at least 21.

Plowman and Marchbank aren't reserves players.

However, GWS tried to play hardball with us this year. They sweated on us getting #13 from Adelaide to pay for Marchbank. We had to make compromises to get a future 1st from Geelong to pay for Marchbank in the end.

Silvagni's old mates are no longer at GWS and the new guys are Richmond affiliated, thus the Deledio trade was pretty good for Richmond. Our trading partner link has gone IMO and we owe GWS nothing.

You're right, they owe you for freeing up list spots by taking their bin juice.

This is great stuff.
Where are you getting this info though?
There have been stories floating around about Grundy's interviews for a long time. Whether they're true or not is anybody's guess.

The Melbourne one, though, goes something like this:
Recruiter: "You look pretty soft with long hair."
Grundy: "I'll fit in with the rest of your soft midfield then."

What kinda moron recruiter says that.
What kinda moron recruiter judges a player on their look (especially when they're actually a hard campaigner like Grundy)

i have heard a rumor that every list manager will make a statement similar to this later tonight-

"we are extremely happy with how the draft panned out for us"

There are a couple alternative versions that I've heard - one where it was about his earring and another where it was actually Mark Neeld that asked the question.

Either way, I imagine it was more of a character test than anything else. See how they handle certain situations. It's a long way from the harshest or strangest question I've heard has been said in the draftee interview process. Recruiters are typically very good at digging up info. I have a few friends who have gone through the process and were stunned at some of the things they were asked, and that were known about them.

Can you give some examples?

Its something I know little about.

You are a liar and I am going to go eat some ice cream to replace the innocence you stole from me.

If I was Melbourne, I would have drafted him on the spot after that comment. Yet they went for another softy in Toumpass.

A few off the top of my head:

A mate of mine was asked about why a primary school teacher remembered him as somebody who couldn't take criticism. Another was asked about breaking his arm when he was 12 or 13 (knew exactly how it happened as well) and whether he'd had any lasting issues since. Same one (different interview) was asked if he had ever lost a family pet and how he dealt with that. A family friend was actually pretty shaken up after one particular interview; wouldn't go into details but was blown away with what they knew and thought it could cost him a spot.

Pretty serious allegations that the afl would have investigated if there was even a hint of truth too. They investigated a similiar circumstance a few years back for a south australian kid for less, but forget who

Mate he or anybody else is not obliged to do anything. If he wanted to turn up naked that would be his prerogative.

It is a fact a number of recruiters thought his behaviour was weird.

Wingard basically told GWS he was only interested in playing in SA. Kavanagh and his dad telling all clubs he'd only go to Essendon. It happens a bit, not much the AFL can do about it really.

As much as it was annoying Wingard did that, at least he was honest and saved us a wasted pick.

Oh ho ho ho, you're a riot. One of the greatest analytical football minds of our generation.

My Coburg source has them big into him, but as you said, at a later pick.
Heard anything about Matt Hanson from Werribee getting a spot? Wouldn't mind North picking him up in the rookie draft, think his game could convert to AFL level.

If the AFL ever did stick their nose in, it'd be pretty easy to get away with.

Kavanagh particularly sticks in my mind. I'd heard the Lions liked him and were considering him until they talked to him. Don't think they were thrilled that he basically said "I'm going to Essendon now or in 2 years - up to you".

If the AFL did an investigation though, it'd be very quick...
"Why did you tell Brisbane you didn't want to play for them?"
"They asked me and I told the truth".
Case closed.

Tom Stewart told Fremantle that he would go there if they drafted him because he has to, but doesn't want to.

What club does he play for now though? Makes you look like a ****wit in hindsight.

Seriously though what an idiot.

Things didn't work out at Essendon and therefore he can kiss his career goodbye.
Had he interviewed well at Brisbane and other clubs, it would increase the chance of them picking him up even if was going to be delisted by Essendon.

Two players to drop massively down the rankings since their underage year are McCreadie and Scharenberg. How can kids who showed so much in ability and ball winning capability look so so this year?

Going to be a ripper watch tonight, never seen so much uncertainty from number 1 right on out into the nether regions of the draft.

From all the knowledgeable phantoms, it does seem the top 6 are relatively the same, Mc, Mc, Ainsworth, Setterfield, Taranto & SPS, just the order to be sorted. After that a fair bit of conjecture. Be interesting to see if Carlton have the guts to bid on Setterfield where he should be bid on, around 4/5 or whether they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them reserves players!

New people in charge at GWS and they weren't particularly generous to us this trade period...apparently in several instances were trying to back us into a corner. I don't think we'd be too worried about potentially pissing them off.
