Yeah but the "speculative picks" are players he wasted draft picks on in the first place at GWS.

So of the 22 players who narrowly lost the prelim this year, 18 of them were either drafted or traded in by SOS. Three were 17 year old selections and 1 was drafted in 2015.

SOS also built up a system where GWS could afford to draft players in order to trade them a couple of seasons later for a premium, keeping them in the pointy end of the draft each year even as they climb the ladder (played in a prelim this year, entering the draft with pick 2 because of that system). At the end of the day, only 22 of a list of 40 can play seniors at any given time. That's 18 blokes missing out/playing NEAFL each week, regardless of whether they're superstars or dud's. You could have 40 of the best players in the AFL, but only 22 can line up each week. Given the luxury of multiple picks inside each drafts first round, GWS could take risks that other clubs couldn't afford to. Some risks paid off, others didn't.

The main difference between when SOS was at GWS and now he's at Carlton, is that before he left, opposition teams were paying overs for a lot of rubbish. O'Rourke isn't worth a first rounder, neither was Jaksch, but SOS made sure that teams paid that price...namely because of where those kids were taken in the draft. Since he's been at the Blues, GWS have been selling kids for unders, and Carlton are the ones driving a hard bargain; first round picks for Henderson, Tuohy and Yarran, making Gibbs play out his contract, getting first rounders off GWS for a bag of chips.

He manages teams lists like a business, and it pays off. I don't mind picking up the GWS kids knowing full well that a number of them won't work out. For the price we're paying for them, even if only 1 or 2 work out, we're still coming out ahead.

Wow mate you're looking at this so literally...

You do realise at the end of the day he's still largely created a list seen as the best in the comp?

Yes some of the high picks failed...but that was always going to happen given how many high picks they have...can't all fit in the 22.
And when your team is that good, you can 'reach' for players and pick for needs, rather than 'best available'.

Learn to put some context in situations.
dont get fooled into thinking you can debate rationally with that troll. has a deep hatred for the blues and thats all he has.

What made guys like O'Rourke, Plowman, Jaksch, high risk/high reward kids. They don't appear to have anything special about them. They just appear to be mediocre talents that were inexplicably taken very high.

so you saw them when they were kids and compared them to others? just cherry picking to suit your argument. there are various reasons why players dont come on however the two main drivers for the real high end picks are injuries and opportunities. in the main the majority of kids who have moved from gws have had both.

Get off your high horse you illterate fool. This has nothing to do with Carlton. I've been a critic of SOS since well before he was working for the Blues. Check my posting history if you don't believe me.

nah son im not going to bother. ur comments are clearly troll like.

i can understand your hatred for sos. champion player (afl team of the century) , person and now administrator. do u really expect anyone to believe that ur not in biased in any way due to his carlton heritage?

I will say the loading up on GWS scraps is concerning

not really as they have generally picked up young kids that have been starved of opportunity. what u should be focusing on is the clear mistake you blokes made in loading up with vets and now having to start again.

Don't get salty with me champ.

I get it. stick up for the club greats even if they suck lol

not being salty at all pal. u mentioned the dog, if ur dog is that smart then i want to buy one for the club and then hopefully breed them. I could then sell them to other clubs. would save the footy industry a shit load and make me some coin as well.

I coudnt care less who u pot however add some rationale to it other than just throw away lines.

Whoa, calm down. Im just saying its close to over saturation. SUrely there are players in the draft who could provide better options. If you go to hard on the ex GWS guys you will always be inferior to GWS, all for small augmenting of the list with those types. I just think SOS has gone a bit overboard.

As for North, we had a shot it didn't work and rebuild is the price, would do that every day of the week

Wow areuok?

Anyway I'm not writing an essay, SOS is a squib of a recruiter, anyone could've made that GWS team with the picks he had

So instead of actually checking to see whether I'm telling the truth you just label me a troll? You are such a child. Just because someone criticises your beloved Blues (which in this case I didn't) you automatically label them a troll. I couldn't give two shits about SOS's past or what kind of person he is. I think he's well below average as a junior talent identifier. FWIW though, I think he's a relatively smart strategist in terms of actual list management.

You mustbe pretty pissed that North got Ahern then ??? I mean getting GWS players on the cheap is a bad thing after all .........

No that is not what I said at all, what I said was augmenting your list with a small amount of these types is fine, I just feel that SOS may have gone overboard.

Gubby was responsible for this, not SOS.

Now if u had said that originally i would have responded in kind.

At the moment the best value in trading in kids has been via the GWS. This is basically due to them needing to reduce their list and salary cap pressures. With the way the academy kids are coming through for them then i can see this situation repeating itself for at least a couple of more years. Primarily all these kids they get will want an opportunity and will quickly tire of playing NEAFL. Having SOS there and others they know will help us in having them want to come and join us. it will also help when the time comes for a big name to want a move and who got on well with sos eg shiel;).

the players we are getting from GWS generally fit the correct age profile and have not had opportunity due to either injury or opportunity. if they were all palmer like journeymen who had played 40-50 games then i would be really concerned.

of those currently on our list i have personally counted out is jaksch but he wasnt a sos signing. of the others Lamb is the one i have scrubbed because i dont believe he has the capacity to improve his athletic abilities to play different roles. of the others plowman is a lock and phillips could end up being more than handy. the others im still reserving judgment on.

I respect the fact you blokes had a crack - that's what genuine clubs do.

Well we didn't use the high draft pick on Ahern in the first place.
