if scheer is that good u will get him and create a list spot. it will just cost you more points from next year allocation however that's been mitigated by picking an extra two first rounders.

if it panned out that clubs in top 10 didnt bid on bowes then it would be absolutely huge for suns. I just dont think it will happen though, lions or blues will bid on him.
If he's good enough, they'll cut some dead wood for him. Jarrad Grant is still on their list.

I kinda agree about hoping a top10 pick comes for Bowes, but only because a bid outside the first 10 means that we won't have a list spot for Scheer, and after following him closely for the past 2 years, I don't want to miss out on him. The points bit I don't care about so much though. But in saying that, not getting Scheer means we would have had an extra top 10 pick so its not the end of the world I guess. Ideal scenario for me is Sydney bid at pick 9 meaning we get 3 picks before him, and more importantly, it stops us from taking English at pick10 assuming we haven't picked him earlier.
We do have list spots if we delist Grant... final list lodgement isn't till after the draft..

well why dont u inform us hodgy

2012 draft

1. GWS
2. GWS
3. GWS
4. Melbourne
.
.
.
.
.
26. Melbourne's 2nd Rounder

.....

Jack Viney was a lock top 5 pick. Some recruiters had him sitting at 1 on their boards.

Melbourne went ape shit hard to get Jesse Hogan in mini draft.

Hogan trade ended up being

Melbourne get
Hogan Barry pick 20.

GWS get
Pick 3 pick 13

In getting hold of him they wanted an added guarantee GWS wouldn't bid one of their first 3 picks on him thus Viney would cost Melbourne's Pick 26. Not pick 4 like what truly represented Vineys real value.

So in essence the Hogan trade was a brilliant move by Melbourne to sure up a young star KP player plus essentially Viney for pick 26.

It's pretty wildly assumed in AFL circles that there was a gentleman's agreement between GWS and Melbourne linked in to the Hogan trade.

.....

Hogan trade really was

Melbourne get
Hogan, Barry, pick 20 (Dawes :( )
[Viney(26)]

Gws get
Pick 3
Pick 13

Who are our multiple small forwards? Green is gone. Zorko the only one of real quality but he is a full time midfielder these days. Christensen spends the majority of his time playing through the midfield and off the half forward flank and even spends long periods of time off the half back flank. Taylor plays as a link up player who spends most of his time on the wing and rests forward but he really isn't that good of a small forward, he doesn't apply any defensive pressure. So small forward is actually a need for us, a need that Ainsworth would address for the first couple of years before becoming a full time mid. Ainsworth is a midfielder.

Now before everyone claims draft tampering at the thought of the Lions not bidding on Bowes, how about you sit back and actually analyse the situation in full. I believe most clubs have a policy to not bid on academy players or father son's unless they genuinely rate that player at the pick because otherwise you run the risk of getting stuck with that player. Now the chances of GC not matching are basically zero, however, if the Lions rate McCluggage, McGrath, Ainsworth, Taranto, even guys like Scrimshaw and Brodie higher than Bowes than it becomes hard to justify bidding on him before selecting one of those guys. I have followed the draft very closely this year and I personally rate all of the aforementioned guys above Bowes. Don't get me wrong, Bowes is a nice prospect and arguably the best Queensland prospect to come through the system since Riewoldt and I rate him in the top 10. I personally don't rate him in the top 5 though.

The other thing to consider is the fact that the Lions have been down the bottom end of the ladder for a long time now. One of the clubs major objectives is to sell hope to the supporter base for a number of reasons including to help sell memberships. One of the major selling points is our youth, not only the likes of Schache, Andrews, Hipwood ect. but the youth we are about to add in this years draft. Now I can only imagine the type of vitriol some of the fans will send in the clubs direction if we bid on Bowes which the GC match and then select Ainsworth due to it coming across as getting the inferior talent and our rivals the Suns getting the superior talent. How can the club market Ainsworth as an exciting young talent who is set to help take the club forward when he was our fall back option in the event that we didn't get Bowes?
Bowes is very close to being the best player in the draft IMO

I've watched him play NEAFL against Sydney and look every bit as good as Heeney no less in a game that his team got flogged in, where he has to win his own ball and make things happen

Not only did he do that but he was able to create possession chains for his team that weren't happening unless he was involved

Think he ended up with 25 quality disposals where he soaked up pressure , made time and space for himself and delivered the ball with precision both by hand and foot

Is he the best player in the draft ? Prob not but if not he's not far off it at all

We do have list spots if we delist Grant... final list lodgement isn't till after the draft..

But I thought you could only draft as many players as list spots available? As in if we draft 4 x top 10, and Bowes then we have to pass on our other picks and cannot match Scheer? If thats not the case then Im all for hoping Bowes slides out of the 10.

I'm pretty sure that rule doesn't come in until next year but I could be wrong..

good analysis and yep a good example. i did mention that clubs had complained about these sort of arrangements and which is why the league now reviews all trades so if clubs try to make arrangements its a lot riskier. the hanley deal looks fair and no hint that suns payed overs for hanley - again this would have been reviewed by the league. Have you heard any talk that a deal has been done between lions and suns?

which is why lions are mad if they dont bid on him. they have absolutely nothing to lose in doing it.

Actually, it's in play this year. However, it would appear that the concession to changing the rules after future trades were made last year is that future trades from 2015 can count as extra picks this year. IIRC, GCS had two future picks, so you should have two picks on top of list spots. What I don't know is whether the AFL has stipulated how to manage this situation. For GWS, we'd expect to use several picks per player in a couple of matches, so we won't go over our list size. For GCS, I don't know whether they would allow you to go to a list size of 41 and subsequently delist someone - which appears to be what your conversation is saying.

The league can review every trade they like. They ain't stopping shit in clubs agreeing to bypass players in bidding on father sons or academy kids.

so if your the lions would you not make a bid on bowes? also have you heard any rumors that indicate a deal has been done between the two clubs?

No no not a school kid, but I don't know why you're dissin school kids...
I'm well aware we will get Bowes, I'm just trying to say that I don't think Bris bid on Bowes.. is that so hard for you to understand.. my opinion differs from your own.. do you get that pin head!
Also Bris don't stop us getting an extra top 10 kid.. you should read the rules big fella... such a campaigner#

well dog with some of the stuff uve come up with sound like a kiddie or is that a pup.

u think lions wont bid but come up with no logical and plausible reason why they wont that's why i continue to press the point.

the lions have no reason to help you, none at all. they have everything to gain by making you guys use maximum points. why would they help you dog when they don't want you in the market?

You have been presented with two which you ignore:

1) They may rate Ainsworth and McCluggage as better players
2) They may want to retain a good relationship with GC for future Queensland academy prospects

scotty ur joking arnt you? ive had some whiskeys so maybe ive missed the gag in your comment.
Well hodge said we are delisting a spud to bring elite talent. For all we know one of those top 10 could be a someone we think will be elite but turn out to be a spud.
Grant was a top 5 pick

Because it takes three other clubs to not bid on him and also a choice from Gold Coast to not take him at 10 and therefore preserving next year's first rounder..

gdog uve seriously got no idea if you think they will use pick 10 when they dont have to.

there is always a risk that high picks dont work out that's the nature of the beast. if you have a chance to bringing effectively an extra top 10 player by deleting grant - u seriously thank ur lucky stars and sing out praise the lord. Grant from day one has never been or in anyway shape or form ever looked elite.
