I noticed I had four warning points last night. Then I thought would being banned from Big Footy through the Summer really be the worst thing that could happen to me?

I'm honestly not sure about being able to carry residual points over to the next draft. To me, that doesn't sound right.
to be honest im not 100% on this either. I was quoting the words of a lions poster on post # 719 that i didnt have time to check out.

ive now found an age article by emma quayle dated 17 November 2015 that is long and seems quite good. ive only had time to scan but it talks about deficits and how they are treated. Im going to ave a good read of it later tonight . its titled :

An idiot's guide to the new AFL bidding system

If this was a free and open draft, there is no way Brisbane wouldn't select the Queenslander that virtually everyone has in the top 5 or 6. Bowes to Brisbane would be given as a certainty given his body of work. It is in Brisbane's best interest to bid on Bowes to keep the legitimacy of the academy system in place, because if they don't bid on him there are only 2 real conclusions that can be drawn:

1. They don't have a preference to Queensland talent where possible and therefor don't need an academy
2. They are colluding with GC in a mutual back scratching scenario (cheating)

Now they can get away with not bidding for him by saying that, unlike everybody else, they don't rate this particular Queensland kid. But nobody is really going to buy that, I don't see other clubs continually sitting back and allowing that to happen unquestioned. Further scrutiny and restrictions to the academy system is likely if the system is going to be abused by obvious collusion (any Lions fan I have read posts from is actively hoping they collude with GC).

The academy system is great I think (except GWS's ridiculous zone), it is introducing more talent to the talent pool and is providing equalisation to the northern sides who have retention issues with the majority of their list being from interstate. Serious questions will be asked of Brisbane if they don't bid on Bowes.

Ainsworth or Brodie? That's who it would have come down to if it was a free and open draft. But it's not a free and open draft, and this is the bit that seems to escape many peoples thought processes.

The Lions are acutely aware how the points system and academy bidding can work in a teams favour. We were able to draft Mathieson last year simply because Ben Keays was drafted later than expected and the left over points became the pick that drafted Mathieson. Then we did not match a bid on academy product Corey Wagner 4 picks later, and drafted Sam Skinner 4 picks after.

What I find funny is that at the beginning of the season SPS and Brodie were being talked about as the possible first pick. By midseason McCluggage was being talked about as a likely first pick in the draft up there with Brodie. Once Ainsworth returned to play after injury and suspension he was talked about as a top three prospect and Cal Twomey had him on his podcast and was talking to him about being a possible number one pick. After the Vic Country v Vic Metro game in the Championship, McGrath's star began to climb, with his shut down job on Ainsworth once McGrath was switched back to man mark Ainsworth. By the end of the TAC cup finals all the draft discussion centred around McCluggage or McGrath for the number one pick. Then Ainsworth comes out publicly and says he wants to be drafted by the Lions. No where from the Div One championships onwards was Bowes in the discussion as the top pick. In fact, much of the discussion at the time was how disappointing the Allies team was, in particular the Queensland players in the team.

Now why should Brisbane put a bid in for Bowes? He's not clearly the number three kid in the draft. On the Brisbane board we had a discussion what should the Lions do if a Bid comes in at 20 for Jacob Allison or Declan Watson. The consensus opinion was we don't match the bid, because the talent available at 21 & 22 will be better than what Allison showed this season. Even with all the kids who have returned home, Brisbane still needs to draft the best available talent at their picks. If we're going to draft kids purely because they are from QLD, and pass over higher rated talent, we may as well hand back our licence and get out of the competition.

Lets wait for Anderson's and Twomey's final big boards and see who is rated where. Because if Anderson still has Bowes at 2, then he should be taking about GWS placing a bid on Bowes, not Brisbane. As for Twomey, his last big board had Ainsworth at three and Bowes at five. So why should Brisbane bid for Bowes, just because he's a Queenslander! By that logic teams should just draft kids from their own state, regardless of rankings.

the fact lions traded hanley to them does not disprove my statement. Now leigh matthews is still on the Lions Board as a Vice President isnt he. But hey why not help the suns become the top dog in the market at least you guys will be pals.

AFL great Leigh Matthews says Queensland should only have one team in the league

AFL great Leigh Matthews believes there is no point persisting with two teams in Queensland.

Matthews coached Brisbane to three consecutive premierships and is currently the deputy chairman at the Lions.

He was sceptical when Gold Coast joined the league in 2011 and reiterated his view on Monday night that there is not enough demand to warrant two sides in southeast Queensland.

The Suns might win premierships, that's not the issue. I don't think there is a demand for two teams in this part of the world.

AFL great Leigh Matthews

"I thought that from the very beginning," Matthews told the Seven Network.

"Nothing will change that. The Suns might win premierships, that's not the issue.

"I don't think there is a demand for two teams in this part of the world."

The Suns and Lions have struggled in recent years, both on and off the field.

Recent crowds have been modest at the Gabba and Carrara.

The Suns have crashed after a bright start to the season, while fellow expansion side Greater Western Sydney is on track to achieve their maiden finals berth.

The Lions have enjoyed one win this year, over Gold Coast.

Matthews doubted whether the league would seriously look at changing the status quo.

"The people who made that decision are still running the AFL," he said.

"While those people are running the AFL, I don't think anytime soon will there not be two teams in southeast Queensland."
I for one as a Dogs fan love the Gold Coast because they took Scott Clayton and left us with Dalrymple

Every club will have criteria they look at when recruiting, go-home factor would be a part of this and will naturally move players higher up the ladder. For Carlton, this will favour a guy like Taranto over SPS. For a Queensland side it will naturally favour local talent.

If the Lions have the exact same attitude to you then they really don't need an academy because go-home factor is a non-issue.

i think twomey has changed his opinion since the big board was published. checkout out his mock draft podcast via the afl website. its hosted by nat edwards and includes aylett. twomey had the lions pick and he bid on bowes which suns (aylett) matched. he then went ainsworth for the lions pick - he also provides an explanation of his rationale for doing this.

fyi - in the mock draft the lions following picks were florent, venables and b cox. they only went to pick 30.

for the suns they selected bowes pk 3, brodie pk 7, taranto 9, english 11

You do know SPS has been very vocal about wanting to play in Melbourne. No go home factor there.

In regards to the Lions, there has been much discussion about targeting Vic Country kids in the draft, as there is a perception that there is less go home factor with the country kids compared to the city kids.

As for the academies, I believe you need to read up on why they were brought in. To offer an identifiable pathway to the elite level for kids in non traditional AFL states. This was the big selling point from the AFL. AFL was losing talented kids to the other football codes because elite prospects can follow a clear path from junior level right up to senior football, be it NRL, ARU or A League. The academies offer kids in NSW and QLD a pathway from Oz Kick all the way through to the Lions, Suns, Swans or Giants. Where it used to be kids would be lured away from Oz Kick/AFL by the Reds or Broncos between the ages of 12 to 16.

Dude, I listen to Road to the Draft every week, usually when working in the garage. You should have figured that out (not the garage part) from reading my previous posts. Both Twomey and Anderson have the same argument why we should bid on Bowes. But those arguments have been discussed for months on the Brisbane page, and largely dismissed.

What people don't seem to get is we have an Academy of our own and us not bidding on Bowes helps us next year Bowes not getting bid on in the top 10 pushes Suns first round pick further up the draft order and we have a highly regarded Academy players of our own next season. So I can see why the club sees not bidding helping us in the long run

Yeah best not to shut in your own backyard, what goes around comes around sort of thing.

i guess the point im making is that people like twomey& anderson change their opinion as the season unfolds and they talk to people in club land. it was not apparent you had listened the 15/11/2016 road to the draft podcast which is why i have mentioned it. whilst it may have been discussed on the brissby board and ive not seen those discussions sometimes there can be an element of group think which doesn't reflect what is happening or should happen.

mate this is all about the rumour the lions have entered into a deal with the suns to not bid on bowes. so our discussions are all relevant.
Not when you derail the thread with 5+ pages of BS. Just agree to disagree.

Have the lions come out and said 100% that they will bid on Bowes?

don't answer a question with a question. this was directed to blue iris after he made the comment - "So I can see why the club sees not bidding helping us in the long run". So you see ive not made any statements on this just wanting to clarify

i thought he had something that will confirm the rumour - he still may have but hasn't responded yet.

Seriously
Just listen and learn
Stop talking

exactly they need to send a message. caro reckons they will take 15 & 37.
It needs to be their 1st. Send a solid message. They basically "cheated the system" in order to avoid a potential drug testing. The player knew 100% what was happening, and I'm sure there are people still at the club who were involved.
