So GWS will look pretty foolish if Mcgrath's name is read out at pick 1 on friday, They sold the farm to try and get Mcgrath and it looks as though he won't even be there at pick 2. Taranto would be hating life if he's taken by GWS.
Well, actually no.
If GWS had kept pick 7 it would undoubtedly be required to be used on Setterfield. So trading with Freo moved GWS up the order ahead of a likely pick. (Yes it's possible that Essendon select Setterfield at #1, but you can't cover all possibilities.) Both GCS at #4 and Carlton at #5 possible bidders on Setterfield, so #3 was pretty much the lowest pick required, and of course it allowed for McCarthy to be traded - which both Freo & GWS needed to happen. Points fairly neutral, but not 'farm sold'. The trade with Brisbane added 227 points to GWS' bag - even if you remove the top pick (#2 or #3) that will be used on a non-academy pick, the points loss for the remainder of the trade was only 56 to move up one in the order. Again, no farms were sold in the making of this trade.

So the two trades turned a few picks and McCarthy into a pick that will get a top-ranked non-academy pick, plus a reasonable number of points for academy picks. Have to pay a price to get a top quality player.

If McGrath goes #1, that's unfortunate, but it was always a possibility not to get the preferred target - all clubs in the draft have a target list in priority order. It still leaves GWS with a top pick before it had to match on academy selections. Not foolish at all. And then if whoever is selected at #2 is worth his draft ranking, he'll get a run in the team.

I don't understand these "draft experts", they have the knowledge but they're not really giving us expert opinions with phantom drafts only a day or two out, based heavily on insider knowledge. All that means is that how right they are comes down to how good their contacts are, not their scouting ability of players, or predictions of club needs etc. This is where US Sports leave us for dead, their experts are constantly releasing mock drafts or power rankings.

I'd much rather see them all list in October whom they rate where, than this form of chinese whispers.
Mate, have you actually been following the draft coverage all year or not? Andersen and Twomey have been putting out their top 30 each month since the beginning of the season.

I'm a big follower of the NBA, so I do know where you are coming from. But Australian sports media just doesn't have the money in it for there to be in depth coverage from multiple outlets like there is in the States. Twomey is the closest thing we have to Chad Ford. And there is next to no coverage of the TAC Cup on FoxFooty or on the AFL website.

Twomey and Andersen both host draft podcasts, and have given us pretty good coverage of the U18's, and even a little on the U17's. They both do a top 25/30 each month with player descriptions and why they rate kids where. They get to what games they can to cover the kids, and watch more tape. But their media outlets don't have the budget to fly them all over the country and pay for hotels. So they have to relay on their club contacts, which is no different to what the U.S. media draft followers do. Twomey even spoke about this in a recent podcast.

Both Anderson and Twomey have spoken about why they rate kids where, and why their final mock drafts, with all their contacts information, will vary greatly from their own personal power rankings.

I wonder how much you actually follow the draft coverage, to make such a post.

Twomey has had his ratings out for weeks.
Whats the point of a phantom with their own opinon, which no-one will know if its close for 4 years.

I didn't know where to put these, so feel free to move wherever appropriate. I sat down with three Northern Territory draft hopefuls in William Rioli, Brandan Parfitt and Tony Olango. You can hear their full interviews on the following page --> https://www.facebook.com/ntfootball/

HARD WORK TO PAY OFF FOR TALENTED RIOLI:

BY - JACKSON CLARK (Twitter - @JClark182)

There has never been any question marks about William Rioli’s natural talent.

It takes a rare ability to kick 50-plus goals, including a five-goal Chaney Medal winning performance, as a 17-year-old for St Marys in the NTFL.

But Rioli’s biggest knock from recruiters was always concerning his body shape and fitness.

But now Rioli is 21 years old and is a much more matured footballer after spending the last two seasons with SANFL club Glenelg.

“When I was playing in the NTFL, my weight was a big issue, that’s why I wanted to go to Adelaide to get my body right at play at the second highest level.” Rioli said on Mix 104.9’s Balls ‘n’ All with Jacko.

“I wanted to challenge myself in another league to further my football, and I knew my stay in Adelaide wouldn’t be long if I didn’t get my body and fitness right.”

Over the past two seasons, Rioli has proven himself as one of the most exciting young prospects in the SANFL.

He turned heads with a four-goal performance in the SANFL state game against the VFL representative side.

Rioli said that watching family members, Cyril and Daniel, play good football in the AFL has made him even hungrier to join them at the top level.

“It definitely makes me more hungry (watching Cyril and Daniel).

“I’ve also seen a lot of good mates make it and it has made me push a lot harder in the SANFL.

“I got a program off the fitness coach in Adelaide and I have been doing a lot of running there and back home.

“I haven’t stopped running since the season has ended.”

PARFITT: I DIDN’T LIVE UP TO EXPECTATIONS

BY - JACKSON CLARK (Twitter - @JClark182)

Pardon the cliché, but a year is a long time in football.

This time last year Brandan Parfitt was touted as a very likely first-rounder for the 2016 AFL Draft.

The skilful midfielder had just finished an All-Australian season as an underage player in the NAB AFL U18 Championships and he’d also played senior football in the SANFL with North Adelaide.

But Parfitt concedes he was somewhat disappointed with his 2016 season.

“I came into the year with high expectations on myself, and to be honest, I didn’t live up to it.” Parfitt said on Mix 104.9’s Balls ‘n’ All with Jacko.

“I battled through a groin injury this year, which was annoying because you want to put your best foot forward in your draft year.
“It’s something that I’ll learn from.”

But talent does not just disintegrate and after overcoming that troublesome groin injury, the bright young talent was able to finish off the 2016 season with some eye-catching football.

A highlight was his dominant 47-possession performance in a SANFL U18s game.

“I try to improve with every aspect of my footy.

“I always want to improve my fitness, with the position I play – midfield or high half forward – you’ve got to really be able to run at the next level.”

As for Parfitt’s predictions on which name will be read out first in Friday night’s draft.

“Huge McLuggage and Andrew McGrath are probably neck and neck but I think it’ll be McLuggage that goes to the Bombers.”

Both Anderson and Twomey have us drafting Graham.Brisbane do all us Lions fans a favor and don't draft Graham South Australian boys aren't very loyal players
Both Anderson and Twomey have us drafting McCluggage. Brisbane do us all a favour and draft Ainsworth at 3. Oh and Powell-Pepper at 23 would be a preferable option.

If they were so desperate to get McGrath, it would make more sense to go after pick 1. Stewart, 3 and 16 (maybe with a sweetener) would've probably gotten them pick 1. GWS made a mistake by declaring their hand so early. At the time, McGrath was being rated 4-6.

I hope you do still get McGrath though as I really want McCluggage.

I think all 3 clubs will be happy with whoever they pick but Fans are likely to be disappointed

Pick 3 for 7, 34, 72 and McCarthy. Based on the point system it values McCarthy as very little but that's probably fair given how his issues and the point system overrated pick 34 massively compared to the 3-7 switch. Wouldn't say that was selling the farm.

Pick 2, 31, 51, 60 for 3 and 16. Purely on points and with the academy kids I'd say this one is a win for GWS.

Given for most of the year they were rumoured to be interested in Ainsworth and now look like passing him as well as passing on the presumptive number 1 pick in McCluggage I'd say they are still looking at a very good kid.

I don't think any kid could be angry about being picked by GWS. Multiple premierships to be had and Taranto would make a very nice Stevie J replacement in the next year or 2.

Stop making sense mate.

We'll be walking away with 3 of the top 9 players....oh well, I guess we outsmarted ourselves this time...

Yeah maybe foolish was a tad harsh, I suppose I forgot to add in the Setterfield bid and the value it holds in itself. Frustrated would be the word I would use from a GWS point if view. If you take Taranto, it makes the Brisbane trade a bit pointless because they will have gotten McClug (if they take him) with the pick they would have likely taken him with before the trade.

I heard a rumour powell pepper will likely be a tiger
Well Brett Anderson did mention that Richmond will likely go with Sam Powell-Pepper with pick 27 if he is still around at that pick, but the issue arises if St Kilda take him at their first pick (which is looking likely at the moment).

I was in a similar boat until I read what each month Twomey does. Here is his October Form Guide
