2016 Draft Rumours

It is ridiculous to talk about aborting it just before each club has their own academy. For example, we will have our first academy player in 2018, why should we not get that privilege?
What is more ridiculous?
Choosing a point in time to scrap a system that is patently unfair, a time that may indeed disadvantage some teams in the short term?
or
Keeping said patently unfair system in place for an infinite period of time simply because you can't choose the right time to scrap it, affecting every team in the short, medium and long term?

I know which camp I am in.

Incidentally, why did the AFL decide to move away from the priority recruiting zone model 20 years ago again? That's right, because it was clearly advantaging some teams over others. Some zones produce more players, and better quality players, more often. Why is that all of a sudden not the case?

The sooner the AFL gets to having a completely unbiased, uncompromised draft the better

Because it is the case.

Anyone who thinks Gil has anywhere near the vision and ability to see the "big picture" that vlad had is delusional.

Seriously guys. That's enough of the Academy-targeting rubbish. There is a lot of nuance to this debate, and that's why it has its own thread(s). I'm getting really irritated by the completely pointless attacks, which to be frank, aren't the most well-reasoned around... There are decent arguments both for and against, and they are in the correct threads. I'm on this thread to read about draft rumours. When I feel like arguing about the academies, I go to the academy threads. Either go to the academy threads, or if you just want to hear a bunch of Victorian supporters whining about how unfair it is to be in the AFL heartland, go to your own boards.

Mods - can we start moving these posts?

Fremantle into Oscar McCinerney (Casey Scorpions) is pretty available information now but have been scouting him for 3 months or so.

If so, impressive work from an interstate club :thumbsu:

Also, don't think Sydney is that into Coburg's boom, 20 yo recruit Luke Ryan as everyone thinks. May very well end up there but won't be spending pick 19 on him with it being used on a slider

My Coburg source has them big into him, but as you said, at a later pick.

Two players to drop massively down the rankings since their underage year are McCreadie and Scharenberg. How can kids who showed so much in ability and ball winning capability look so so this year?

Going to be a ripper watch tonight, never seen so much uncertainty from number 1 right on out into the nether regions of the draft.

From all the knowledgeable phantoms, it does seem the top 6 are relatively the same, Mc, Mc, Ainsworth, Setterfield, Taranto & SPS, just the order to be sorted. After that a fair bit of conjecture. Be interesting to see if Carlton have the guts to bid on Setterfield where he should be bid on, around 4/5 or whether they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them reserves players!

They are ready built players, the underage players are always touted highly the following year.

Plowman and Marchbank aren't reserves players.

However, GWS tried to play hardball with us this year. They sweated on us getting #13 from Adelaide to pay for Marchbank. We had to make compromises to get a future 1st from Geelong to pay for Marchbank in the end.

Silvagni's old mates are no longer at GWS and the new guys are Richmond affiliated, thus the Deledio trade was pretty good for Richmond. Our trading partner link has gone IMO and we owe GWS nothing.

The fact Grundy tanked some interviews helped seal his fate and get him where he needed to go.

Pretty serious allegations that the afl would have investigated if there was even a hint of truth too. They investigated a similiar circumstance a few years back for a south australian kid for less, but forget who

You mean Macreadie who was planted into a rugby school with little AFL development program for 2016?

Nah, all above board...

Ohh please, most Giants left Spotless in fear of heir lives thanks to your mob...very gracious winners.

We will remember.
Jesus. If you think Dogs supporters are bad you won't survive other clubs supporters. Also maybe if you could get enough people to fill up your small stadium you wouldn't feel so intimidated in a home final by opposition members.

Wingard basically told GWS he was only interested in playing in SA. Kavanagh and his dad telling all clubs he'd only go to Essendon. It happens a bit, not much the AFL can do about it really.

Disagree.

Teams would have notes taken from interviews. All it takes is someone going to the afl with that evidence and the afl imposing a restriction (such as being removed from this years draft pool). People will stop doing it before too long.

There's not much to disagree on. It's a known fact that it's happened before, and the AFL has done nothing.

They'll try and maintain the validity of the draft as much as possible but they're not going to exclude talented individuals from the draft pool any more than they put a stop to all the players leaving Brisbane. The draftees will get around the system too, they might just keep dropping how close they are to family and how they would be nervous in a new environment - not enough for draft tampering, but enough to make clubs wary of picking those players.
