2015 in review:
2015 saw the end of our unjustified trade ban for sticking it to the man and landing the biggest name in the game. We were able to bring in Michael Talia for draft picks and Callum Sinclair in a direct swap for Jetta. While we didn't invest much to bring them to the club, they've both been quite poor in review. Talia hasn't even played a full game for the club and has already been sentenced for drug possession, while Sinclair has been pretty poor as 2nd ruck.

Prelude:
It's quite late in the season to start this thread, however there's already another thread for general trade discussion, including wish lists & fantasy. This thread continues on from last years successful trade discussion thread, based primarily around the players that we already have at the club.

Draft
1st Round: 9
2nd Round: 19
3rd Round: 46, 49
5th Round: 93 (likely pass)
6th Round: 111 (likely pass)

Traded
Swans have swapped picks 14, 17 (R1) and 31 (R2) to the Power for picks 9 (R1), 19 (R2) and 49 (R3)

Swans have swapped picks 39 (R2) and 52 (R3) to the Giants for pick 31 (R2)

Tom Mitchell - 63 games, 23 years old
Position: Midfielder
Received: Picks 14, 52 from Hawthorn
Lost: Pick 57 to Hawthorn

A proven ball winner and close to elite inside midfielder has added valuable outside run to his game in 2016. Over the years it was almost impossible for him to get a game through injuries and form, but 2016 he cemented his spot in the team. The contract offer has been on the table all year, but with Carlton & Hawthorn chirping in his ear, we may lose him this season. Hawthorn are the most likely destination, but Carlton are also a possibility. In order to keep him, the Swans will need to offer 500k/season for at least 4.
He signed a 1 year extension in 2015: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...ly-fortune-in-afl-finals-20150916-gjnzkc.html

Toby Nankervis - 12 games, 22 years old
Position: Ruck/Forward
Received: 3rd round draft pick 2016 (46)

Establishing himself as a basher and crasher, the often clumsy but brutal "trier" big man has found his opportunities limited in his career at the Swans. He's played only when Tippet or other ruckman have been injured, although he's acquitted himself very well more recently. He's not very graceful, but often shows moments of deft touches and exquisite skills (that pass to Franklin). There's a lot of upside to him and while he'll never be a great tap ruckman, he offers a lot around the ground with his 1%rs.

19 Oct 16: Trade confirmation https://sydneyswansblog.wordpress.com/2016/10/19/toby-nankervis-moves-to-tigerland/

Available for Trade
Harry Cunningham - 70 games, 22 years old
Position: Midfielder
Value: Low 2nd round/high 3rd round pick
Probability: Very Low
Contract Expiry: 2019, RFA 2019
An indifferent 2016 and no finals action lands him on the list. He's been trialled in a number of positions with varying degrees of success, most recently in defence. He's played as forward, winger, centre, tagger and small defender, but has neither looked particularly comfortable or competent in any of those roles. A quick confidence player with very good foot skills, he lacks from consistency and struggles to stay in the side.
Signed a 3 year contract extension in 2016: http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2016-04-19/cunningham

Sam Reid - 98 games, 24 years old
Position: Forward
Value: Low 1st round/2nd round draft pick
Probability: None
Contract Expiry: 2017, RFA 2017
The maligned forward spent the entire 2016 season out injured after completely banjaxing his hamstring in the final against Fremantle. Having failed throughout the 2015 season to truly cement a position in the team, he would have been considered tradable if it wasn't for his leg injury. He was trialled in the ruck, as CHF and CHB laughably for 20 minutes against Melbourne in which we conceded 4 goals.
Signed a 5 year contract in 2011: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/swans-lock-in-reid-for-five-20111216-1oys3.html

Dean Towers - 30 games, 26 years old
Position: Forward
Value: Low 2nd round/3rd round draft pick
Probability: None
Contract Expiry: 2018
Out of contract and hasn't signed an extension, the enigmatic and powerful forward, a star of the Sydn... He either signs or he's gone with his contract running out this season.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-06-29/swans-utility-towers-above-as-trade-target
Oct 28: Resigned with the club http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2016-10-28/done-deal-for-deano

Zak Jones - 29 games, 21 years old
Position: Defender
Value: Low 1st round/2nd round draft pick
Probability: Low
Contract Expiry: 2017
He was potentially on the trade table last year because he couldn't get in the side ahead of Rhys Shaw. Having cemented his spot, his aggression was a welcome bonus as well as his attack on the ball. Occasional mistake aside, he's been a good player in defence. He's on this list with the suggestion that the Swans could be after Touhy.
Signed a 2 year extension in 2015: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-05-...t-melbourne-after-signing-new-deal-with-swans

Nic Newman - 0 games, 23 years old
Position: Defender
Value: 2nd round draft pick/3rd round draft pick
Probability: Very Low
Contract Expiry: 2018
Late bloomer Nic Newman was rookie listed in 2014 at the ripe age of 21. He capped off a good NEAFL season winning best on ground in the reserves grand final loss to GWS. Touted as a half-back Malceski type, he's sure to get his chance next season if he's still in the red & white.
Signed a 2 year contract in 2016: http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2016-09-13/new-deal-for-newy

Daniel Robinson - 11 games, 22 years old
Position: Midfielder
Value: 2nd round draft pick/3rd round draft pick
Probability: Very Low
Contract Expiry: 2018
He established himself in the midfielder earlier this season with reliable performances, showing good skills and good decision making, but put himself out for the season with a shoulder injury.
Signed a 2 year extension in 2016: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-08-22/unlucky-swan-dan-robinson-signs-new-deal-eyes-finals-return

James Rose - 7 games, 20 years old
Position: Forward
Value: 3rd round draft pick
Probability: Very Low
Contract Expiry: 2018
Makes the list purely as potential trade bait. He's played a couple of games over the last couple of seasons, showing glimpses of his potential with a few bags, but when he had a run of games earlier this season, just couldn't establish himself. Ultimately Xavier Richards took his spot and hasn't let it slip since. He might end up being a Membrey type at another club that can give him a red-hot go.
Signed a 2 year contract extension in 2016: http://www.5se.com.au/sport/afl/news/2016/1/sydney-swan-forward-james-rose-signs-new-deal/

Jeremy Laidler - 82 games, 27 years old
Position: Defender
Value: 2nd round draft pick
Probability: Very Low
Contract Expiry: 2018
Perennial journeyman Jeremy could again be thrust onto the trade table. He's already playing at his 3rd club, but with the emergence of Harrison Marsh and Aliir Aliir and Michael Talia returning next season, his chances of playing are very low. There's still value for him and a battling club can certainly do with his skills.
Signed a 2 year extension in 2016: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-04-28/laidler-signs-new-deal

Brandon Jack - 27 games, 22 years old

Position: Forward
Value: 3rd round draft pick/4th round draft pick
Probability: Moderate
Contract Expiry: 2017
Hasn't had great success at the Swans but has shown quite a bit of ability when he's had a run on. A new home may be exactly what he needs, but maybe an AFL career isn't exactly what he wants. If we want to get anything for him before delisting him next year, it's now or never.
Signed a 2 year contract extension in 2015: http://www.triplem.com.au/melbourne...-jack-signs-new-two-year-contract-with-swans/

Delistings

Harrison Marsh - 6 games, 22 years old
Position: Defender
Value: None
Probability: Very High
Contract Expiry: 2016
Out of contract 2016. Has played well in his debut season and has done enough to keep Laidler out of the team. Adds more aggression, dash, skills as well as offensive output. Played mostly in the reserves in his time with the Swans, more recently as the captain.
Delisted in 2015, redrafted as rookie in 2016, signed 1 year contract
http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/player-profile/harrison-marsh

Jordan Foote (Rookie) - 1 game, 20 years old
Position: Midfielder
Value: None
Probability: Very High
Contract Expiry: 2016
Played just 1 game this season and with his contract running out this season is unlikely to get an extension or rookie drafted due to age. Best of luck Jordan.

Jack Hiscox - 1 game, 21 years old
Position: Midfielder
Contract Expiry: 2016
Played just 1 game this season and with his contract running out this season is unlikely to get an extension or rookie drafted due to age. Best of luck Jack.

Alex Johnson - 45 games, 24 years old
Position: Defender
Contract Expiry: 2017
Undergone his 4th knee reco this year, at least he's back running and the signs are good. Will be delisted and re-drafted as a rookie unless he signs an extension in the next month.

Kyle Galloway (Cat B Rookie) - 0 games, 20 years old

Position: Ruckman
Contract Expiry: 2016
Wasn't promoted and didn't make the cut. Could still be picked back up in the national draft.
Oct 6: https://sydneyswansblog.wordpress.com/2016/10/06/swans-announce-list-changes/

Abaina Davis - 0 games, 20 years old
Position: KPP
Contract Expiry: 2016
Wasn't promoted and didn't make the cut. Could still be picked back up in the national draft.

Xavier Richards - 10 games, 23 years old
Position: Forward/Defender
Contract Expiry: 2016
This player embodies hard work and determination. Written off by all and sundry (yours included) just 2 months ago, he's entrenched himself into the Swans forward line next to Tippet and Franklin as our 3rd tall. When his older brother was played in the same position but admirably failed, it was Rhys Shaws move that saved his career. While he doesn't kick big bags, his pace and athleticism adds the missing unpredictability to the Swans forward line that it sorely lacked for much of the season. He's out of contract for 2016, but will have done enough to earn himself a new contract.

Retirements
Ted Richards - 261 games, 33 years old
Probability: Retired
Contract Expiry: 2016
Club champion and stalwart Ted Richards has already announced his retirement.
http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2016-08-05/ted-calls-time

Ben McGlynn - 169 games, 31 years old
Probability: Retired
Contract Expiry: 2016
Often discussed on the forums, occasionally heatedly, Ben McGlynn's indifferent form has led to many discussions about his potential and impending retirement. Unlikely to crack 200 games, a premiership win may be all he needs to seal his retirement. Unlikely to happen this year, it's still possible.

Tom Derickx - 15 games, 29 years old
Position: Ruck
Probability: Retired
Contract Expiry: 2016
DRex the TRex, as he's colloquially known on these boards, is out of contract at the end of this season and most likely won't be offered a new contract. He's popular at the club, well respected and very well liked and from all feedback, has performed admirably in the reserves while guiding the younger players. A potential coaching role awaits, or maybe he'll become a carpenter, who knows. But one thing is for sure, unless there's a mysterious plague, we'll never see him drop the undroppable in Red & White again.

Jarrad McVeigh - 286 games, 31 years old
Probability: None
Contract Expiry: 2017, UFA 2017
Slowly succumbing to old mans injury, the calf curse, is the doorway into the graveyard for many a footballer. A brave stalwart of the club, often maligned in his earlier years to playing at elite levels for at least half of his career. With his pace all but gone, he's honed his pointing skills to within an nanometer of perfection. While none can point, shout and blame others as well as he can, there's plenty on the reserves team that can run faster, tackle and kick a ball equally as well if not better *cough*brandon jack*cough*

Wait, why is hiscoxs value at low 1st round and Cunningham's is 2nd round? Same with rose? I mean Cunningham has shown a truck load more than hiscox.

Robinson, Newman, Foote and Jones are good players to have on the list. From what we've seen they're all hard nuts and can offer pace (Jones) and skill (Newman) to a midfield group that's already awesome. It's not essential, since we already have Heeney, Mills, Hewett etc as guys that can be added to our midfield, but a bit more depth would be nice. I think GWS and the Bulldogs are proving that if you can have eight or nine really solid mids, rather than four or five legit guns, it's a handy thing to have.

Why on earth would we consider trading jones or newman? We just re signed both.
Yep, you'd have to think Newman was a zero chance at being traded since he signed a new contract last week.

Good write up chunky :thumbsu:
As a few of the others have said I think Jones, Newman and XR are going no-where
Can't see Reid going anywhere unless he wants a fresh start, seems very well respected internally by the coaching group.
All the others are probably fair game especially the Towers & Cunningham fringe type players, think they have had their cards marked as in their ability to be best 22.

Question about our picks. If you were to hypothetically accept one or two for Mitchell would your club covet this year or next year?

Just wondering if there are any academy kids on the horizon in '17 as I haven't heard of any this year. Also next year has been touted for its big guys.

Thanks

Great write up Chumpy. There are a couple I don't agree on as you know but I must also disagree on Foote. I think he's safe and a keeper.

I don't think we'd actually trade Reid with one year to go on his contract as much as some on here seem to want us to, I'd have thought it'd make sense to keep him on as KPP depth for another year and if he still struggles to get on the park next year, cut our losses then?

I would agree with that. Though if trading him freed up cash to keep T. Mitchell and we kept a hold of Nankervis this trade period then I don't think that he would be missed.

Saying that, I agree that I don't think his name would even get floated for a trade this year.

If we are looking to trade out reid i think our best outcome would be the dons. Hes still under contract and has injury issues but i also dont think he is worth a 1st rounder. They give up hibberd for pick 26 and they can then on trade that to us for reid. I would be happy for that to go through. We can pick up another tall forward with that pick and start again if we have to.

Why is Zak Jones on there?

Outrageous!

It's one person's opinion, you're welcome to disagree with it as others have.

Personally can't see Jones being traded, we seem to see him as a successor to Rhyce Shaw.

If Reid was in this years draft what pick would he go?
Minimum top 10, realistically top 5.

I would say not even close. From mid 20's down to the 50's.... I dont think his value is that high at the moment to be honest. It is 1 reason why you wouldn't want to trade him because his upside is higher then what we would get in return.
