Don't tell me you didn't enjoy the Carr brothers destroying Kerr/Cousins/Judd in a few of those spiteful derbys
Very enjoyable.

Would love to have Josh Carr back. He had a bit of shit in him, got under the skin of the opposition but also was a decent player (most of the time). Nick Suban could be that player if he was damaging.

Of course I did. I think every non West Coast fan did tbh.

The Carrs would've been better if Josh hadn't cost us so much and left back to Port fro nothing as soon as Matthew retired. Overall however Josh Carr's output didn't match the cost we paid.

He gave us decent service, but we did overpay. 2410 points by todays method (basically pick 2). Ugh!

Which is why I am not interested in paying heaps for B Hill. I am not interested in paying overs for someone just because he is a brother of a currant player. If there is a case for B Hill it should be be on what he brings to the team alone. And to be honest given that he has 3 premiership medals I am skeptical that his price would not be inflated.

Cant see why people here want brad hill , who he going to replace the young one eg weller will hidden their development, d.pearce ? I dont rate him but ross do and give him two year deal.
D Pearce did get a two year deal but it shouldn't mean he cant be made to work hard for his spot or be dropped for a player like B Hill. I agree that B Hill is not going to make an enormous difference but I still think he would improve our best 22.

I'll have a go at answering.
If the out of contract player is delisted, then he is free to go to the club of his choice.
If the out of contract player is not delisted, a trade will need to be arranged.
If a trade can not be arranged, the player must nominate his salary and terms and put himself in either the main draft or the preseason draft. That choice will depend on where he wants to go. If a player wanted to go to a poorly performing club eg Freo he would nominate for the preseason, as not many teams would get a chance to select him. If he wanted to go to a better club (eg Ball to Collingwood) he would nominate in the main draft as the lower clubs would be more likely to select a young draftee.
So, in the following scenario:
  • Hogan does not re-sign with Melbourne
  • Melbourne do not agree to any trades and he plays out the 2017 season with the Demons
  • At the end of season 2017 he is out of contract and delisted. He is then an unrestricted FA
  • He can then go to the club of his choice (us) and Melbourne get nothing? Is there any scenario where Melbourne would not delist an uncontracted player?

He is only considered a delisted free agent if the club doesn't offer him a deal, if they do offer him something (anything actually) and he chooses not to accept he is not a delisted free agent and must move through the draft or a trade.

You only become a DFA if you are not offered a contract, which is very unlikely for Hogan. Based on this, Hogan would need to be traded.

Anyone have a bad feeling that we will get screwed this year, the rules will be changed due to new Tanking
claims over Bombers/Lions, Dockers/Gold Coast?
Brisbane will be given compensation picks, and who really wins the match with the Suns?
Will the AFL convert to a lottery system for the bottom four clubs?

So instead of pick 3-4, we get pick 4-5? Who gives a shit in all honesty? We suck at the moment and any draft pick is a gamble anyway. Could be Fyfe, could be Mora, could be Simpson.

Sucks for us if we want a particular top 3 player and Brisbane can take a punt with their second choice with a player who might decide to move home after a couple of years.

They could of taken the punt on that player before us anyway. That player could also very well turn out to be a dud. I don't see the major difference in it and if we're all honest, Brisbane probably need the priority pick.

Give Brisbane a pre first round pick compensation pick, but at the same time potentially turn their actual pick 1 / 2 into pick 5?

No, I don’t get that feeling.

Further a lottery, which they will not introduce this season, would be just as likely to benefit us as not. Unless it was a multi season weighting that has been canvassed for all draft positions. There would be a riot if that brought that mid-season as it would disadvantage more clubs than just us, whilst benefiting GWS. A highly unlikely scenario given the league is taking more heat over GWS than they like already.

Sorry, they wont bring a lottery in this year, but you can imagine the Tanking debate, dead
rubber games, will start up again with the bottom four clubs.
I wouldn't be surprised if they introduce a lottery for 2017.

The AFL has already "broken" the teams up into groups of 6. So lets work with these groups of 6. If the AFL decide on a lottery system then I would work it as follows;
  • Draft placement is lottery within your group of six
  • Each round is a separate lottery - So the order or round 1 is not the order for round 2 and so on
  • All compensation picks are at the end of either the round or your block of six. (never with or before your lottery pick)
  • I am undecided on if trading should happen before or after the lottery
  • Lottery must be drawn live, so no chance to change the draft order as compensation.
    • To make it an "event" the AFL could broadcast it but that only really works if there is something with it like player trading.
    • Alternatively you could run the lottery with the draft and allow pick trading ie;
      • "We are drawing the first pick in the 20xx draft. ..... And it goes to ???? who have 10 minutes to act before loosing their pick starting now."
      • I am sure that it would be hated by the clubs, selectors and player managers but it would make the draft much more interesting to watch.

The lottery system exists in American sports with much higher salary caps. (And also with sports where good players make a much bigger difference to a teams output). A lottery would just further weaken the position of consistently unsuccessful clubs in the AFL.

They will leave it as is or make it a cross season rolling thing.
