Mason Shaw's problem is injury prone. But never was going to get games with Westhoff, Schulz, Dixon and butcher this season. But could be worth a look, invite him to train and see what he may have. Also Butcher being delisted, pretty harsh I think. He's not a bad mark just his goal kicking is shocking. Pre season draft perhaps?
Seems to play ok when given a chance Butcher but maybe he can't maintain it. I'm not sure. He always seems to be the first dropped. Takes a great grab but his kicking is erratic as you mentioned. I guess the question is, is there any point taking a mark in the forward line if you rarely convert?
Will be keen to see if Mason Shaw has shown any improvement. He and Saunders have been consistently kicking a few in recent weeks.

Sure, they're exceptions but also very talented.
Not sure about the players you mention but Sean came straight out of Ireland to play here; Ireland one day training at an AFL club the next. Those others may have been in Australia for a while and perhaps even played at lower levels before making their mark in the game.
There is an opinion that Mason Cox is only getting by because of his extreme bulk. It's too early to say he has made it .
Nah Fred.

All those (Irish) guys named came straight from Gaelic football into an AFL environment.

Stynes took a couple of years to break into Melbourne's senior team, as did O'hAilpin (who came from Hurling / Gaelic fooball) and Hanley. Kennelly and Tuohy only needed one year, Clarke came straight into Collingwood's senior team.

In all negotiation situations you go in with a prioritised wish list. To this end what do we think the priorities are. IMHO they run something like this.
  1. Get good value for those asking to leave.
  2. We need a bunch of picks between 4 and 40 (our current rough picks)
  3. We need to secure a KPF
  4. If one results in a loss of ruck stocks we need a Ruck
  5. We must take at least one in the first round of the draft
  6. If we can get a trade that does not stuff the previous 5 we get B Hill.
How do I see that playing out?
  1. If Langdon really wants to leave we need to demand our pound of flesh. I would not be looking for any trades at this point. Teams can pay in picks and then IF we want a player we will pay in picks to get them later. Help Mayne and Clarke to get a good contracts going out. Do not FA in.
  2. Mayne and Clarke will give us hopefully two picks either after our traded 2nd round pick or end of round 2. I also think we need to trade a few reasonable players for what we can get such as Suban, De Boer, Mzungu, C Pearce and Ibbotson. If they don't get traded they could be delisted. I would assume that mostly 3rd round picks. Trade picks aggressively to upgrade 3rds to 2nds, 2nds to 1sts if possible. We will have to pay over for this
  3. Get the McCathy trade done as soon as practical. We should only be paying an end round 2 or round 3.
  4. If Clarke or Hannath is traded we should try for Lobb. This will be hard as I don't believe we should trade our 3/4 pick for him no matter what. Not next years first round pick either. Of the other ruck options mentioned by others only Daw or Witts would I pursue if we can't get Lobb. If we get neither and have lost a ruck then our pick 3 must be for English.
  5. If 4 means we have taken English I will be content but I hope we have traded in a Ruck and can then take either SPS or another young gun.
  6. B Hill to me is like a cherry. Kinda good but it really is fantatic when on an ice cream or in a blackforest cake and so without the other stuff getting done first is a pointless effort. We cannot afford a round 1 pick for him IMHO so either he is with a Mayne/Clarke compo pick or not coming.

No NO NOOOOOOO to Shultz. Do people even follow football? Has done nothing this year and been injured.

It would be the equivalent of an opposition team thinking it's a good idea to pick up Michael Johnson from us.

We are in rebuild mode people... REBUILD. We're not cutting players above 28 to bring in players older!

Are we all taking CRAZY PILLS!!!!!

Anyway, what's everyone thoughts on Cloke? Could be handy.

Bodes well for Brady and Tanner then. They are done for year, but not yet cut.
Both out for the year injured though, so could happen before? I dunno..

I reckon Mora stays. Invested too much not to give him 1 more rookie spot. Tanner maybe too?

Still can't see us getting rid of more than 10 this year with limited high picks.
Hannath, Grey, Mzungu, Hurley, Deluca, Mayne (FA), Clarke (FA), Ballaz (trade), Langdon (Trade), Pav (retire) would be all by my guess

I know you are really really keen on him. Have you seen him play live before Danny? I haven't seen him live since U18s, and I know a lot of the draft commentators haven't seen him live, so was hoping to hear from someone who had in recent weeks. Hopefully he'll play for SF in the League finals so we can watch him on the tv. Otherwise I may have to get down and watch him in the flesh. I was impressed with him at U18s but I'm still not sure where this grand rise to top 5 pick contender has come from?
I saw him make his League debut last Saturday, he played okay, took a good contested mark, has a nice kick but he looks fairly raw. By the third quarter he seemed to be struggling with a sore right leg, played in the forward line by the end cos he was limping a bit. My opinion is he would take 2-3 years to get his bulk and fitness up to scratch.
I was listening to Cal Twomey's 'Road to the Draft' podcast on the way home today and he surveyed 6 recruiters (anonymously) and 3 of them said they'd take McLuggage first, but one of them said the gutsy pick would be to pick English cos he could end up better than all of them. They mentioned he could end up as a Dean Cox-like mobile ruckman.
I would be okay with us taking English at 3, we'd need to be patient with him if we do though.

I beleive that mature age recruits can get 1 year contracts not 2 like normal draftees, so he could go in the preseason draft and Freo would have third pick if he wanted to go back home and dogs drove the price up to much.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) only refers to Senior list and Rookies and as he is on the Senior list his contract is the minimum 2 years . The agreement from what I recall doesn't refer to mature age players. But your Welcome to do your own research on the AFL Players association website
where you can access the CBA.

Maybe I am biased but I would definitely rookie-list Mason Shaw, the only thing I've seen that let's him down when I've seen him is he occasionally fumbles when he goes for a contested mark. He's a decent kick and would be a good backup for the forward line.

Spot on Cobbler. What is wrong with people. The dude is 32 next year played about 3 games, missed more than half the year with a debilitating back injury, struggled to get a game when he was fit and only played in the last game as a send off.

I was only so so on recruiting him last year and we in effect dodged a bullet and Pav played on for a year. Heck would get more games out of a retired Pav. Just madness. We need to go to the draft and look for players with potential not getting a game at other clubs that are 24 and under.
