Oh Yeah that's right. Would have been perfect for us this season.
The new system they are considering, of giving an extra second rounder to all of the bottom 8 seems rather generous though.
That rule change preventing the trading of bulk picks for first rounders will keep it on track, otherwise every bottom four club would swap their 2nd and their extra for another first every year.

Yeah that was a good change by the AFL. That was the one thing about the bidding system that really turned me off. The lower picks had way to high a points value. Clubs were giving away junk and getting high first rounders. BS.
Shame they didn't wait one more year before making the change though. :)

It was a rule I liked, it meant we could benefit from the academy players coming through by giving points and getting better picks that the academy clubs didn't need. Now we can't get in on the action and the academy clubs get to turn their late picks into top five choices just the same.

I loved Sydney crying that they had to give up a low first rounder to get Mills. Kept whinging that he wasn't as good as other clubs were saying and that they shouldn't have to give up that much.
Naturally anything beneficial evaporates as soon as we are in the position to benefit from it. Shits me really.

For everyone who reads this post, Sydney used picks #33, #36, #37 and #43 to take Mills at pick #3 after their 20% discount on points value required to match.

Wouldn't we love to use such late picks to pick up SPS..

The one year deal was smart I think. Gave him an opportunity to impress which he didn't. FA is going to be the most likely way we would get any compensation for him, otherwise he would just walk out. I really couldn't see meaningful trades offers for him.

For sure we need to stock up on rucks. English early and Goddard later suits me. Goddard closer to being physically ready, English with the higher ceiling.
So we're going to have Sandi and griff plus two 18 year olds as rucks, I can see that workin well.

You shouldn't have told me that. I am going to get depressed now.
Some reckon Brissie will take SPS just before us. Shades of McCarthy and GWS.

I think taking english mainly as defender /ruck . And develop him to ruck / defender in two year time. High chances that psd get a mature ruckmen.
Might as well keep Clarke or Hannath, there ain't many rucks out there. Nic Nat and Cegular gone for twelve months as well, IMO Hawks and Eagles will both chase rucks as well.

True and he could end up the number one ruck in time but when all are healthy he should be the forward/ruck, like Jenkins at crows.
Yeah wouldn't surprise if they hold on to Hannath (if Clarke leaves) or recruit a mature ager from the SANFL or VFL. Or bring in someone sitting on an AFL list somewhere and not getting a go. Lot of water to go under the bridge yet. Frightful thought...but Clarke might stay:eek:

I think he was looking to get out last year, signed a two year deal, now wants put again.

Maybe he will go to the gold coast
Surely he will be involved in the Prestia trade. He wants game time and Gold Coast don't have any good medium sized forwards. It's all behemoths, crumbers or mids pushing forward

I have no doubt we'll do some sort of deal with GC early days, but more so to arrange pick exchanges.

I can very easily see our pick 3, 39, 57 and a Barlow, Suban or DeBoer type for pick 6 or 8, 27 and 40.

I really believe this slight downgrade of our first pick should be on the cards. Plus they already have picks 4, 8, 21, 22, 24, 27 and 40 from the first 3 rounds. Add pick 6 for Prestia and whatever they get for Omeara and they are rolling in it.

Pick 3, 39 and 57 = 2862 points
Pick 6, 27 and 40 = 2883 points

If they value any of our mature mids they may even give us pick 24 on top of as it's honestly of no use to them. Maybe we'd have to slide to pick 8, but the net gain could be massive.

GC could end up with picks 3,4,8,21,22,39 + Barlow and still to receive whatever they from Omeara. That will be 6 picks inside top 22. I mean how many will they need or want?
Freo could end up with picks 6,24,27,40 and lose Barlow.

GC is our greatest friend this trade period, make no mistake. If we want draft picks (especially in the second round to net McCarthy and Hill) we need to deal with them.

The actual trade:

Freo
Out: Pick 3, 39, 57 and Barlow
In: Pick 8, 24, 27 and 40

We then use 24 and 27 or McCarthy and Hill!

A 5 position downgrade from 3 to 8 effectively gets us McCarthy, Hill and likely English.

Opinions?

Not bad idea, I reckon the club might wait to see if we get any compensation picks if we lose players first then weigh up something like above. Would be nice to get CMac and Hill plus have a first round plus a couple of 2nd rounders

Yep I think all the free agency stuff is done prior to actual trade week. So if we net a couple of second rounders, we can still do similar to above but it gives us greater flexibility too.

Didn't the compensation picks come out midway through the trading period last year?

I've only seen him once this season and he didn't do much , but I have given the benefit of the doubt because it was earlier in the season and he has been building. He will be on tv on saturday, I think. 7 mate iirc and should give us a good look, hopefully in the dry this time.

rumour (facebook so pinch of salt and all that) but Freo rumoured to be talking to Nathan Blakely- yes older brother of- for a rookie spot. 195cm 97kg plays ruck for Swan Districts but guess they would look at him for elsewhere at Afl level. Good player, hardnut type.
Has anyone seen Nathan Blakely play in the WAFL? Is he good?

As much people complain about hannath, he is scoring goal and about the same hitout as clark last week vs claremont. I agree with paracleet if clarke decided to go keep hannath as a cover for griff ( too injures prone). Still worth drafting 2 ruck . One goddard the other mobile ruck . 2018 is a decision year to either cut sandi( retirement ) / griff.
depends how you see it.

I am dead certain clarke, who is in his prime years, will leave. Griffin and Sandi are old. Hannath is the only other ruck in his prime years but he is crap.

Apeness is more of a forward than a ruckman which is fine.

If we gain an 18-19 year old ruckman in this draft, That means for the next 3-5 years, Hannath and Apeness will be our 2 main rucks.
