Should we have a discussion ranking our players in order of value at the trade table?

Factors include:
Age
Free agency
Contract status
Ability
Potential

I think it would be interesting to chart player progression that way over years, we could refer to say Weller (+15) in 2016 or Barlow (-12) in 2016 etc.

Free agency would be a difficult thing to have a rating against. Free Agency for Fyfe would be a negative because compensation would never cover the lose. But Free Agency for Mayne may possibly net us a 2nd rounder which IMO would be a huge win.

I'm sure we could come up with some weighting for free agency after the other values have been given.

Assuming we get pick 3. What sort of range would you feel suitable to downgrade into two picks?

I feel we should still atleast have something in the top ten, and then nothing higher than perhaps 16.

If you go by the points system and turn pick 3 into 8 and something else, to be fair the something else is pick 28. So maybe not the best system to use.

I'd be happy with 3->8+14 with some chump change thrown in go get the deal done.

With all the Neale love here, I'm interested in whether the consensus would trade Neale and pick 1 for Hogan?

I don't think it will be an option. If he signs in the next 2 weeks he cannot be traded. And I don't think Melbourne would accept that trade this year.

Id say out;

Pav retire
delist - Mzungu, Silvagni, DeBoer, Hannath (if Clarke leaves), Hurley Deluca
Free agents - Mayne & Zclarke (try keep due to lack of ruck depth)

That's 6 main spots (assuming 1 of Clarke & Hannath stay & 2 rookie

Then in;

Upgrade Mora & Smith (1 last chance on main list)
McCarthy
1st round pick
2nd round pick free agent compo
1st Pre season draft pick or 3rd rounder depending on quality of player
1st round rookie pick
2nd round rookie pick

Only players that may attract some interest are DeBoer & maybe Hannath

If we get pick 1 and trade it I will be pissed, but as someone already posted, if it was for say, McCarthy, Tomlinson and a pick in the top 10, that's alright.

Pretty sure we are the last team too trade pick 1.

If the club has targeted some specific players then I am fine with wrangling a pick trade. For example Strnidica and Goddard instead of a shot at S-P. But if we had 8 and 14 I wouldn't trade for 3.

The other question is whether it's worth trading pick 3 which will likely be a bona-fide gun in SPS into two players who are less likely to make it.
If there's a chance we think SPS will be available at 3 you take him, run and don't look back.

The only disclaimer to this is if by some chance Hogan wants out of Melbourne for a return home. Then you would have to seriously think about giving up SPS, otherwise I'd be keeping that pick and SPS in particular.

The guy will be something special.

Where does the 2nd round compo come from?

If you mean from Zarke i think the AFL will do a "Clinton Young" on us and give us Sweet F A

I think it works when a team specifically wants to get a player likely to go in the top 3 not so much when we're trading for equal points value.

If GWS for instance were hell bent on SPS and were happy to trade 2 of their 3 first rounders. The Collingwood and Carlton pick they have (likely pick 4 and 7) for our pick 1 or 2.

They'll still have enough picks for points for their academy players plus they get their man. But doubt they care much for SPS with the players they are getting from their academy.

Havent seen any of him only that he is an indigenous midfielder/small forward.

Care to share some info?

Don't think we would get the top 10 with it, but maybe their 2nd rounder?

Then get in SPS ear & tell him to fein homesickness next year & nominate Freo ;)
