Witts is from Sydney, with Mumford getting on he's more likely to go to Giants, they still don't have any from Sydney on there list.
Billy longer is in the vfl, looks out of favour at the saints and might be able to be enticed, he is the style of ruckman that RTB likes, though I don't really rate him skill wise but he's hard at it but never looked that fit either.
Billy Longer was a homesick Lion before moving back to Melbourne.

That's was an excuse to get out Brisbane, he was playing neafl and never looked much chance of playing in front of Martin and Luenburger at the time. As I said I don't really rate him but just throwing up names who might be approachable, tradeable. Saints could use a hard mid, deboer, Barlow, Suban type.

if we got a second rounder for him it'd effectively be a late first rounder and I'd be happy. Surely if he plays 22 games we can claim he was a required player etc, no one ready to replace him therefor second round compo is justified. I reckon he'd flourish at North, he'd get the third or fourth defender and be able to do his pressure acts and still slot a goal or two.

A late first round/early 2nd round is exactly where we want to be - that's where the key position talent is expected to be.

What are litherlands strengths ?
Who can you liken him to ?
Hard to say, he is a good sized 3rd defender who appears to be able to defend reasonably well but what I did like about him is that he was quite quick and that's got to be handy. But how he would go in a poor defensive team like ours at the moment we all don't know but I would certainly take a chance on what I have seen.

I feel like Brad Hill is the type of player who looks good in a Hawthorn side but will look crap in ours. The Hill brothers might enjoy playing together though. But then again, Brad has just been charged with assault so I'm not sure I wanna go there...
I know it is going to trial (minor facial injury) but Hawthorn have not made any sanctions against Hill so it may be very minor but still not a good look (provoked??).

Hill would surely be an upgrade on what we have across the centerline at the moment - the concern would be if he does a Lewis Jetta but with his brother being here I just don't see that as likely. His job will be harder than at Hawthorn but I like the little bit of arrogance that he has and the more I think about it the better it sounds - yeah get him.

You're right, we are defensively sh!thouse but I wouldn't worry to much about how we are at the present, it's more about where we want to be and who we can implement into the team that will help us get there.

That's easy. No. When the absolute elite fall into your pick you take it.
Nothing is guaranteed but this kid is as close to a guaranteed A+++ player as there is.

My concern at this stage would be... How many absolute elite talents with nagging injuries do we want on our lists? He sounds like another Harley Bennell type ie. constant nagging ailments.

The Mayne compo pick shapes up to be the goodwill gesture pick to trade for McCarthy. At the end of the day - Mayne for McCarthy is a win in anyone's book.

To help our ruck stocks (assuming Clarke goes, Hannath is chopped) I'd be keen to chase some second stringers if the price is right. Specifically I'm thinking guys like Tom Nicholls, Nathan Vardy, Tom Downie, Billy Longer. All languishing in the seconds (either due to poor run with injury or form), but have showed they can play. Just as some of our guys would benefit from a change of scene, there is a chance these guys could as well. Gives us a ready made option and the opportunity to rookie list a young ruckman for the future.

I think Sam is making sure he is in perfect health for the U-18s.

So rated similarly to Headland, Wells and Fiora. By the way I actually agree with you, but I think the club should have an open mind about trading the pick. Could see a situation where we trade the #1 to GCS for #3 and something else if it would still nett us SP-S. And if they have an academy player we would be happy to bid on they just may do that. But who knows what lies ahead at this stage.

I really don't understand the mindset of trading a high pick and splitting it in to two. We whine constantly about not having enough good ball users, then we finally have our first good pick in a long time to get a good ball user and we think we should split it in to two picks to get two ordinary ball users instead?

I don't mind splitting to two, if SPS is injuries prone. No point having your best player sitting at sideline.

He's not injury prone. It's a minor thing. He needed to get himself right ahead of the U18s - which is important for his form ahead of the draft. And even if SPS isn't the pick we go with, there are other very good ball users in the draft in those top 5 picks.

Awesome, he can join Black playing for Werribee.

Last year we were linked with a lot of discards, none of them were remotely close to the mark. We picked up Ray as a rookie, which was the extent of the recycling due to a pretty thin pool of talent last year. This year's crop is meant to run a lot deeper, we also have Wood who is starting to show some form in the side (pre-concussion) and Black is playing decently in the VFL, not sure why we would go after Mayne imo but I guess never say never.

For those who couldn't get past the paywall here is what they said about our players:

FREMANTLE

Chris Mayne – Prime utility who is unlikely to be part of the Dockers’ rebuild. Wonder whether North would look at him to bolster the back half and swing forward. Rated highly for his two-way game and could be used as a pawn in Fremantle’s bid to land a big fish, such as Cam McCarthy or Jesse Hogan.

Lachie Neale – Breakthrough in negotiations in past two weeks should see the contested-ball winner remain in the west. Interest has been high but indications are he will remain a Docker on decent money.

Michael Barlow – Out of contract and has just about had his papers stamped by Lyon, but showing he is still too good for second-tier football. Can still win the footy but pace a concern and not the midfield linchpin he once was.

Zac Clarke – Form has seriously waned and knees are a worry. Best appears to be behind him but could appeal as a back-up big man.

Tendai Mzungu – Another fallen Docker who could be forced to return to the WALL.

Matt de Boer – Beloved team man but also been pushed out of Lyon’s side. Role player with limited upside.

And here are some of the ones that are probably of most interest to us:

Josh Jenkins – Having a breakout season and looking for long-term security. The Lions are coming hard with an offer believed to be about $700,000 a season, but reckon Crows get the deal done.

Jarrod Witts – One of the most interesting targets this year, given he would hold significant appeal for a rival club chasing a No.1 ruckman. Pies want to keep him and talks continue on a new deal. Don’t be surprised if clubs such as Port Adelaide or GWS have a crack.

Nathan Brown – Free agent who is competing with Jack Frost, Jeremy Howe, Ben Reid and the returning Lachlan Keeffe for a spot in the backline. Another one who could be chased at season’s end. No new deal coming anytime soon.

Jaeger O’Meara – All the talk is Hawthorn is keen on the silken ball winner and Rising Star. But would a club pay huge money given his patella tendon problems? Everything hinges on his impending return. O’Meara has said the constant change in the club’s fitness department has not been ideal.

David Swallow – Contracted until next season but North Melbourne has long been a fan. Roos high-performance man Steve Saunders took charge of his medical management in the off-season and captain Andrew Swallow would love to play with his brother. But Kangas would only seriously chase if they are confident his knee is on the mend.

Sam Day – No.3 draft pick who hasn’t blossomed into a star. Out of contract South Australian with strong links to the Crows and Power.

Jack Martin – Contracted until the end of next year and clubs including Essendon watching closely.

Jonathan Patton –Bought a $1.24 million home in Richmond last month but is contracted until 2017. Has overcome two ACLs and is playing good footy, pinch-hitting in the backline at times.

James Stewart – Another talented tall who can’t crack the best 22 and is coming out of contract.

Cam McCarthy – Reckon there is already a deal in place to send him home to Fremantle.

Neville Jetta – Free agent who has transformed from a lockdown backman to a damaging rebound man. Price rising and obvious interest is from West Australian clubs, but appears likely to stay put.

Aaron Black – Has rediscovered some form in the VFL this season after a dreaded campaign last year. Has long been linked to Fremantle but remains contracted at Arden St until the end of 2017, on good money. Kangaroos could hold onto him for another season unless there is a decent trade offer.

Mason Wood – Has emerged as one of the most sought-after players in the country on the back of his continued strong VFL form. Mobile and hard-running forward can play deep in attack and on a wing. Fremantle heads a pack of chasing clubs.

Majak Daw – Out of contract and yet to enter talks with the Roos. Will emerge as a hot target given his glittering highlight reel and inability to crack a North Melbourne team flush with quality talls. Brisbane publicly denied interest but is believed to be keen and he could be a good fit at Fremantle.

John Butcher – The forward with a dodgy kicking action was given another year to prove himself but is yet to be seen this year. Would anybody touch him?

Ben Griffiths – Played the best game of his career to get the Tigers over the line against Sydney, but remains out of contract at season’s end. Rival clubs are watching closely and could come over the top with a bigger offer, but his up and down form has left some unsure.

Ty Vickery – Free agent was thought to be close to re-signing last year but a new deal is still not done, leaving the door ajar for a Fremantle or Brisbane to swoop. Just not sure whether he can become a top-liner.

Liam McBean – Wants to break through for a regular senior game in the back half of the season but has not capitalised on his VFL appearances this year. Out of contract at season’s end and open to more opportunities elsewhere.

Josh Hill – Not sure the Eagles are rushing into a new deal for Hill while there is a chance to sign homesick Giant Cam McCarthy.

Mitch Brown – Has had no luck with injuries and has been leapfrogged by Jeremy McGovern. St Kilda has previously been a fan of the free agent.

It's pretty damn hard to turnover your list and replace the serious amount of deadwood we have with a 1st, 3rd & forth round pick... 3 picks. We need to give this draft a better shake than that and this is a viable option to do so.

And personally, these SPS clips floating around don't really impress me that much re: his disposal. There are plenty of turnovers and overcooked kicks in his video packages to suggest he's the solution to our disposal issues.

Pleasantly surprised to see no-one has mentioned the apocryphal 'no dickheads policy' when Brad Hill's name comes up.

Perhaps it's because we would actually like him and can picture him and his brother flourishing together in the same side? I know I'd like to see that...

But if you just replace them with players with the same ceiling on skills then what's the point? I think the way to improve a list (for sustained success) is not to split early draft picks, it's to trade out B22 (and fringe) players to get extra currency that can then be used to get players with higher ceilings that might take a few years to get to the level you need. Also, our 3rd this year will be almost the same as our 2nd last year. And our 4th this year will be almost like our 3rd last year. Make some trades and get one or two compensation picks for Mayne/Clarke and we'll be doing ok out of the next draft without needing to split our first.

We're all entitled to our opinion about SPS. I personally think he's the most naturally talented footballer I've seen in ages but yes I agree he still makes mistakes at times.

We interested in enough of them according to this article?

Tbh though there's only three or so there that I wouldn't be interested in at the right price.

Players worth a phone call:

Angus Litherland: 24 yo, 192cm, 88kg - Medium sized defender from Claremont. Starved for opportunities behind Gibson, Frawley, Stratton, Birchall et al. Not a world beater but could definitely fill a void, especially if Ibbo is moved on.

Shane Kersten: 23 yo, 191cm, 92kg - Key forward from South Freo. Would make a nice addition to our redundant forward line but would need some help (Apeness?) as he currently works well next to Hawkins.

Jarrod Witts: 23 yo, 209cm, 111kg - Ruck - gets around pretty well for a big fella and tackles well. Is now behind Grundy and Cox at Collingwood but could easily play a tandem role with Sandi in 2017 before taking over the mantle from there on. Not a bad forward either.

Brad Hill: 23 yo, 181cm, 78kg - Wing/flanker - Stephen Hills rogue brother. I agree with the comments on here, he could just be a good player in a great team but worth a flyer imo because who's to say Freo won't be great in a few years. Can't question his ability when he does have the footy, kicks goals and can't be any worse than Sheridan/Crozier at the minute.

Freo are in a desperate need to turn over the list. Not saying any of these guys are the answers but they're worth it at the right price in my opinion.
Just for the sake of it ...what sort of offer would you make to him? Have to be reasonable dollars id say for him to move, he has previous had an attitude about Freo but I'm sure nothing a very good offer couldn't change?

Getting opportunities at a contender. Not a chance he will move.
