I agree , although if you pick up a DFA and they play 50+ games , isn't that a win too?
Absolutely

Our focus this year needs to be nail at least the first 3 picks.

Everyone is saying what a terrible draft 2014 was.

These are our first 3 picks for 2012 & 2013

2012 Menzel, Graham, Temay
2013 Cripps, Giles, Holman

Two plays left, one will be shown the door next year.

Yeah definitely. Really good midfielder on both the inside and outside. Great size and skill.
Thanks mate.

I wonder if we'll bid on an academy player with both our 1st and 2nd round picks to keep the bastards honest.

There's been a bit of talk about a bid for Setterfield at pick 5...with a few projected to land around our second pick.

I would take Sproule with 25, GWS wouldn't have the points if they were looking at taking Setterfield and Perryman early

Agree Arrow, Sproule reads fantastically some say the could almost be best tall forward option.
Can share your insights on him I've have just read some scanty snippets.
Thanks

How deep is this draft?

Is it actually conceivable we could get a good player at 48?

Cause that's usually very hard to do

I'd like to conceive that we could get a good player with a first or second round draft pick because for us that is not just usually hard to do its regularly hard for us to do.

It appears SOS might think so. He has stacked a few picks up for the latter rounds. That doesn't necessarily mean he will use them all though, more so that he is prepared should there be players that slip through to those picks. How many players slip through will depend on how many picks he uses and ultimately how many more delistings he will need to make by the cut off date.

But he has to make the cuts before the draft doesn't he? So he needs to know how many kids he must take?

Hmm, maybe you are right. Not sure when the final list lodgement has to be made to be honest.
I'm just thinking about how many times clubs don't use all their picks.

Menzel was a talent that even Wells rated as being the second best in the draft. Should have been a wonderful selection, but he developed issues.
Graham: We talk about him as though he was a top ten pick.....He was a #54 with not much quality after that pick.
Cripps: No need to say anything.
Giles looked like a player to me but injury ruined his career. Injury....injury.
Holman (#51) probably should have remained on the list last year. Cut after being told he'd remain. Has had a wonderful SANFL year and who knows.

Temay though? Sits in the DVR category, where he never really showed anything that warranted a selection.
Still has me beat and from what I've been told, we can thank McKay for being so insistent. (Not saying it's fact, because I can't prove it)

Many of our players have developed issues and we may well run on industry standards, but there sure has been a lot of them.

I think our biggest mistake was just not turning our list over enough and taking more picks even if they were later.
Temay was picked on "character" but just never had the talent to play a AFL level. I know everyone always wants players with great character but I just pray we never overlook someone like Franklin for a much less talented player. It is a fine line I guess.

I still can't believe Holman got the boot. Would have kept him over Graham for sure.
I dare say he was a victim of Bolts' "get rid of all Malthouse's recruitment players" because not many of them are left.

Yep. I don't follow this stuff, but the talk around his pros and cons:
Pros - good runner for his height, good disposal for his height.
Cons - not a great mark, not very physical in play.

To me it sounds like he does nothing you want a tall to do, while doing everything a small does nearly as well. Leaves his stand out attribute as 'tall'.

Close to 80 live picks expected at draft

THE STRONG depth of this year's talent pool is set to be reflected with close to 80 prospects expected to be picked at the NAB AFL Draft next month.
Clubs are tipping between 72-77 live picks when names at called at the November 25 NAB AFL Draft in Sydney, with what many recruiters believe is an even crop of talent.

Geelong and Greater Western Sydney could use as many as six picks at the draft, which would likely be the most of all clubs. Brisbane Lions, Carlton, Essendon and Gold Coast will also invest heavily in this year's draft by likely making five picks.
Reckon we could easily do six.

SOS - The Real Test

While SOS was at GWS, he never needed to draft anyone from pick 30+

Last year, apart from SOSOS, all other picks were in the top 20 (Not counting the Rookie Draft)

In years to come, when we reanalyze the 2016 draft, we will get the first indication as to the skill set of SOS as a recruiter.

My formula, to determine a "Pass" mark for a draft is based on games played for mid round picks in the first 3 rounds:

Example:

Pick 9 - 150 Games
Pick 27 - 100 Games
Pick 45 - 50 Games

More games above these indicators is a bonus, not to mention 4th round + picks. Other factors to consider is quality of games.

I really look forward to seeing who we take with the 4 picks we have in the 3rd and 4th rounds. I hope we don't take the easy option of acquiring DFA with these picks
Bookmarked for four years time

Is a very exciting KP. Beep tested 15.4 earlier in the year. His mobility and speed for a guy standing 197 is exceptional. They say he tries to model his game on N. Riewoldt, reminds me more of a more athletic version of Tippett. Last year his conversion was very good 16.4 and has also done stints as a KPD. Sproule could also play on a wing, nice level of aggression too

Still raw, but will make it at the highest level

Should we go with 39-5 again and no more delistings we are looking at 5 picks with Byrne being upgraded.
Perhaps we should go 40-4. 1 upgrade, 5-6 picks and 0-1 DFAs if we have our eye on anyone. Sheehan gets a 4th rookie year with AFL permission or goes. Really want to see a few draft picks this year. Want to see a young ruck late or as a rookie too.

We have run below industry standard, hence our demise, through our competitiveness. The 6 players listed should have been a minimum return of at least 600 games.

You don't pick flankers in the top 12, that's all Menzel was. As for Holman, I didn't even rate him draft worthy, had Sicily & Amon at that slot. Happy to send you my notes from that draft.

I am comfortable with the way SOS looks at talent, looking forward to the draft

SOS and bolt have changed the competitiveness, speed and mobility of all the players that have been traded or released, apart from Henderson. We all know why Yarran had to be moved on. Holman had no agility or speed at all
