I have always agreed with the "best available" approach, the big counter-argument against that though, was the Carlton of old that constantly overlooked KPP, we were bereft of genuine tall talent for a long time.

I think we have been a bit lucky with how the drafts have fallen. Our first draft into the rebuild was stacked with KPP (which we have been able to add to with Plowman and Marchbank), obviously they take longer to develop so I think we were a bit fortunate. It looks to me highly likely that the best available for our first 2 pick this year will be mids.

Agreed, I think there may be a slider available at 25, or still a very good mid. I still suspect we will take a tall in this draft, which could even be with our third round. I just hate missing out on good talls :thumbsu:

If we somehow pulled Taranto and Florent I'd...I'd be real real happy [emoji4]

No way Florent is still available at our second pick. Powell-Pepper is the one I'm hoping and praying to the old Gods and the new that we snag with our second. He should be there or thereabouts.

Say it every year.

Draft age is looney tunes. These are under 19 age kids thrown head first into the system. Most get 2 years before the scrap heap.

That's career over before 21.

US NFL system ensures they go through a collegiate system, and aren't drafted until 21.

Will take a mature aged, physically developed player every day of the week at 3rd Round.

Dylan Clarke, Oliver Florent, Will Hayward, Sam Powell-Pepper, Jordan Gallucci, William Drew, Cedric Cox, Jy Symkins, Shai Bolton, Josh Battle, Jarrod Berry, Daniel Venables.
These are all players that are considered late first rounds to early 2nd, hopefully one can slip though to our 2nd.

Spot on anyone of these talented lads would be great value for our second rounder.
Go Baggers

What does everyone think of Zac Fisher? I just watched some footage and he looks impressive. Clean, tough with great skills. Reminds me of a Chad wingard type player in the way he moves...very classy. Does anyone think he will be around for our second pick?

I think he could be around the mark

Not having a crack, On, and all years are different I know but remember being excited by new names coming into the club?
Watson, Giles, Holman, Fields, Walsh, Violjo-Rainbow, Davies, Mitchell, McCarthy, Bootsma, McInnes, Lucas?

Saw some footage today and yes he looks a likely sort

Big no to SPP.

He kicks like he's never played the game before.

Drops the ball from way to high when kicking, even when not being under any pressure.

Looks rushed generally.

Yeah I do. I was wrapt when we drafted DVR, from what I'd seen of him as a junior.
No doubt he had plenty of talent and in fairness the last few years our 2's have been woeful, not really a great place for a young players to develope.
In the past we've drafted players who have had plenty of footballing talent, but would be lacking in some other very important aspects, be it self belief, dedication, mental toughness or durability.
Now that SOS and Bolts are on board, hopefully we can get our drafting and development in order.

This year is a great draft to have plenty of picks in. Expecting 75-80 selections in the national draft, the last two years have barley made it past 60.

That is the knoc on him. He may be able to tidy that up when he gets into a AFL system.
He did nearly nail a set shot from 60 in the all stars game, took Olango a 204cm ruckman to just touch it on the goal line.
He is a beast of a kid and he's kicking is no worse then Dangerfield's was at the same age.

I really like him! To me he is one of those "if he was 5cm taller he would be top 10" type players. If we take Brodie with our first (or even Taranto or Scrimshaw), he would compliment nicely with our second!

I don't recall any of those names being drooled over, pre-draft though.
Maybe Lucas and possibly McCarthy, but that would be it. No-one even knew who Bootsma was......and may care not to remember, either.

Menzel would have been one that people would have been drooling over. Once again a player picked for having a heap of natural footballing talent, but missing some other key qualities needed to make it at AFL level.

Patrick Cripps selection will go down as one the biggest recruiting flukes of all time. To think if Essendon didn't get busted for drug cheating, we would have had a higher draft pick and Rogers potentially would have picked someone like Freeman or Lennon. :fearscream:

This is where we have learned, I feel. Learned the hard away admittedly, but we do seem to have learned.

Having said that though, players do need the right environment to thrive in and we just couldn't put that together at the club.
We've largely taken that out of the hands of the older statesmen of the club and priming the young guys to embrace and pass on the new club culture.

It's still going to take a little time though but it looks as though it has a good chance to come about.
