It seems like SPS is the trendy pick 5 for now. I would be disappointed if we went down that route, although I think he is a talented footballer. I am firmly of the belief that you hit the draft with your needs in mind. We just traded in Pickett to play virtually the same role as SPS. What are we lacking? Ready to go midfielders to replace Murphy and Gibbs in coming years. Brodie or Taranto for me. Let's get some reliable guns first to fill gaping midfield gaps
Very different style midfielders.

I think Petrevski-Seton's video suggests he's ready to play forward and that in time he will become a very good midfielder. See:

I would be very happy if we went with SPS.

I don't think that really serves the club.
I wouldn't like putting two years into a player just for him to want to leave and for what?.........the chance to get another player you have to start from scratch again? Roll that over a couple of times and you may find you're not gaining much ground at all.

Create the environment that discourages players to leave.....unless the club chooses them to do so.

What are your thoughts on interstate first round draftees?

For me personally, the landscape has changed so much they will inevitably leave to go home.

The stigma has been removed about

a) changing clubs
b) getting homesick

We have benefitted from this through Docherty, Marchbank, Jaksch etc and most importantly Judd (who really was a big part of the changing the landscape).

Same as any draftees.
Do your homework to ensure they're serious in their chosen vocation and then provide the environment where they won't want to leave.

Glad we didn't procrastinate on the Cripps go-home factor.

EDIT: If it was a 51/49% situation between two players at your selection, you may side on the home-grown but not when it's 60/40% Never.

Thats true but surely that was a fluke....

Rogers and Hughes liked selecting WA first rounders and that worked out once (maybe twice if you count Yarran)

Were Kernahan, Bradley, Hunter, Dorotich etc etc flukes also? :)

Nah....It's largely being used to advantage....for now, at least.

Dorotich only became a 100 goal full forward after he went home.

I think the point was hidden somewhere else. :)
Hard to kick 100 goals playing as a backman anyway.

The doors has been opened up somewhat where "I want to go homes" are concerned.
There will be some genuine considerations amongst many with ulterior motives, but I do feel that the AFL may be forced to change some of the rules when it comes to players being drafted. Most players are fully aware that they may have to be moved away from home when they sign up for the draft.

Different times Hark. Money talks...

I don't know what that means. Money has always talked. :)

I don't know about you but I'd sooner hear the truth than for players leveraging the situation by citing that they're missing their family, their friends, their pets and whatever other reason that may be thrown up.

If we want to play it, let's just open up the whole player trade market and won't the players shit themselves when they're allowed to be traded to any club, their current clubs choose to send them to. What then?

In all fairness, the guys you mentioned weren't kids and had already shown that they were great players

Kids? What are kids to you?

Then let's raise the draft age until these kids become men, or whatever age/maturity level that may be. Problem solved.

If you don't like the system you know you're walking into....don't walk in. Wait another year until you learn how to wash dishes. :)

No I meant guys like Bradley, Hunter, Kernahan had already played a fair bit of football before coming over. The other aspect, it was only the VFL.

Some kids from other states, sometimes believe they can cope, or just worry about being drafted, then the pull of home is very strong

Then AFLPA get involved, stating that their players will go to court, citing restriction of trade

OK, but so have some of these 'kids' that have already spent 2 years away from what you want to call home.
They are now 20/21 and realise at the end of their 1st contract that they want to go home?

I'm not suggesting everyone will/can adjust but the door is ajar for this excuse being abused.
It either has to be closed or let's just revisit the way we do things altogether.

Anyone think there may be a chance we'll take Jake Bradley, probably get him in the rookie draft.

Craig was a great of the club but I think he was 22 or 23 when he started at Carlton after coming from Port Adelaide in the SANFL so don't really know what he was like early days and whether he was a late developer. Jake has been a tennis player I believe and has taken to footy a little later.

Elite runner in all areas, potential late developer. We lack little blokes who provide a bit of spark and skill.

Would be a guy who if we pass on, you would hope we signed up with the Northern Blues.

Sort of player you would give a couple of seasons as a development project. The way AFL is played now he could be a really good fit.

I hope we do. The only way we definitely won't is if we structure or lost with 4 rookies instead of 6.
A year in the vfl won't hurt either way. Next year we could nominate him father son because he wouldn't have been on an AFL list.
No rush with sob.

A way to reduce this occurring, is to change the draftee contracts to a 2 by 2 year option contract. Then a club has the so called rights to that player for at least 4 years, if they wish to retain the player.

Having said that, some players are asking to be traded within the first 2, 3 to 4 years into their careers, that will always continue to happen

Craig was also in Port Adelaide's team of the century after playing 100 SANFL games with them so he was definitely not a late developer.

Craig Bradley was a bit different he was a 3 time Best and Fairest winner with port magpies and good enough to make their team of the century all by the age of 22

On SPS:

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/wa/a/30748411/halls-creek-teen-tipped-to-become-an-afl-star/#page1

Seems like he's got a great head on his shoulders and said at one point that he'd love to play in Melbourne "the home of footy".

Having Tex and to a degree JP on board in 2017 would be a help, too in terms of helping him transition to a big AFL environment.

I'd still rather Brodie for a few reasons, but would not be disappointed to see this kid running around in Navy Blue.

Reckon we are much more likely to take SPS than Brodie. But keep an eye out for a late charge up the charts by Will Hayward

Hayward is a gun. Wish he was there at 27 odd.

I'm genuinely torn between Brodie Taranto and SPS for our first. I've never been this torn about a pick ever.

Either way we are getting a very good footballer. The ensuing picks will be also interesting to watch.

I like Allison, Hayward, Zac Fisher, Bolton.
