If Essendon do bid on Setterfield with their first and it wouldn't completely surprise, would GWS match?
I don't think they would as McGrath is their primary target.

What would happen after that?
Something like:

1. Setterfield
2. McGrath
3. Ainsworth
4. McCluggage/Taranto/Bowes/Hayward ??

What if?

Would be massive if Bombers took setterfield at pick 1 and GWS lost their bidding power through penalty

Looking forward to what we can do with our later picks. Having done the phantom draft there will be some genuine talent with those picks that we haven't seen before. 48, 63, 66, 70 & maybe 81 will good interesting. Rookie draft as well.

How would these look added to our list?

5. Will Setterfield
25. Jy Simpkin
48. Myles Poholke
63. Kym Lebois
68. Ryan Garthwaite
70. Quinton Narkle

Can't see GWS letting go of Setterfield especially given that they'll lose Whitfield for almost half the season. I do like him though.
Like your suggestion of Simpkin at 25.
Think Poholke is a good choice here given you've taken Simpkin.
Why do you like Lebois Soapy V???
Garthwaite would be an absolute nick here.
I'm a fan of the Narkster, so I'm in.

Some nice choices in there for sure.

If it's not Setterfield its Taranto Brodie or Ainsworth. :) Just a bit a guide really and those names have been mentioned around those numbers. Whoever they are there is some real talent late. Over to SOS

as for Lebois I really rate him. Classy player who kicks goals. Small forward and possible mid. Awesome left foot kick

I've only seen him play one game but I was super impressed by Garthwaite in the TAC GF.

I strongly suspect his skill-set will translate well to AFL football. Good composed negating defender and I really like the way he uses the footy, he looks extremely unfashionable but he's very creative imo.

For those who know more about him, what are the knocks?

Gut feel is we'll use one of our 4th rounders, or whatever pick we got in that deal.

Essendon may jump in before us if it's the rookie draft.

At 192 is less than the mandatory Sheik approved 195cm for a KP, but he looks like he has long arms and a short neck so seemed to play taller.

Also a very awkward looking but generally reliable kick.

I like him for a 3rd rounder. Is part of GWS academy but they are likely to go for McCredie and Sproule ahead of him.

Hisham will go before rookie draft imo

I would even take him with our third pick

There's not too much wrong with him SOAP, but if I'm nitpicking....Kicking action is a bit weird. Doesn't affect his KE at U18 level, but seems to take a long time to get it from hand to boot, which may become an issue at the next level where you have much less time. I know he's a defender, but you'd like to see him get a little more of the ball. When he does get it he uses it pretty well though.

All this talk saying GWS might not match a Setterfield bid at 5 if they're stripped of 15/37, but why wouldn't they.
Man I would love to snatch Setterfield if GWS lose 15 and 37, I would probably rate him above Taranto if we had the choice between them.
As I was saying the other day, they'd still have about 4200 points to play with between the other picks (which would move up two spots, and they'd keep hold of 77, now 75) and their future pick deficit bank. It would mean they'd still have 1700 points to play with for Sproule, Macreadie, Cumming and Mutch.

That's if we bid at 5 for Setterfield, and if someone bids at about 13-14 for Perryman.

How good would it be for Adelaide if they had Gibbs AND Lyons....
Lyons would add about as much as Rhys Palmer.

He had nearly 20 possies to half time in the U18 GF. Looks a natural defender knowing when to peel of. Is a classic moneyball pick in that he looks awkward which will put recruiters off but statistically he doesn't get beaten 1 on 1 ( in the u18 GF they said he had lost something like 1 out of 30 1 on 1 contests for the season) which is close to the most important stat for a defender.

He is ranked in the 20s according to champion data.

Yeah Hayward prob wasn't even in the 20's before the last few weeks of the year in the CD rankings. The champion data stuff is just OK, doesn't forecast how good a player may be in a couple of years...he had a huge finals campaign and I can just see immense potential with his marking ability, work rate when the back hits the deck and has definite X factor about him. If the rumour we're after him at 5 is true I'd be rapt.

At least make em pay though, if they don't then we get the player we really want

I'm not sure they would match, they have quite a few list spots to fill and considering they'd barely have a player on the list past early third round I doubt they'd want to picking players into the 5th round

Liked your post mate but thoroughly disagree with the following quote. If those guys are still available at our second pick and are rated as better players then we need to take them. I doubt Jacksh makes it and I doubt Smedts makes it so to not draft a kid because we have those mentioned is crazy imo
What if Kerr, Sproule, Battle and Hayward aren't as good as the 10 or so touted tall's predicted to be top 20 next year. Should we still pick them because they are better than Jaksch and Smedts this year or should we wait and grab a bloke next year that is better than Jaksch and Smedts as well as Kerr, Sproule, Battle and Hayward.

Completely agree, I would bid on Setterfield, think he extremely talented. I believe they will match the bid, on Setterfield and Perryman

Don't think we will get Setterfield even if GWS lose a couple of picks, they will just go into deficit

Still out of Taranto or SPS for me

I haven't cared to work through the points but I feel it may be possible that if they lose 15 & 37, that they may just have to let go of Setterfield, if they want to gain Perryman, Sproule etc.

We'll see what tomorrow turns up before any wild projections. :)

Personally, I would take the best available, at least the first 3 picks, whether they are midfielders or KPP. Pick 5 looks like being a midfielder, after that I suspect SOS & Co will sit back and cross the names off their whiteboard until our next pick.

I couldn't agree more, teams need to make them accountable. It's no use complaining about the academy system if you aren't willing to bid on these players.

And you are right, they aren't going to want use late picks on non-academy players, especially with so many list spots to fill. I just feel there's a decent chance they let Setterfield go, as matching a bid like pick 5 will assure them of going into deficit pretty early.

Also, this guy Setterfield looks fantastic, the run of injuries is a concern but I would be very happy if we got him with our pick. He looks fantastic with ball in hand and the high tackle count suggests he doesn't mind hard work.

Another 2 cents from me re: GWS situation. It's complete BS that the system the AFL have put in place can ensure that GWS get the exact same players regardless of losing draft picks. Basically, there is no punishment at all. I just think they should be almost forced to pass on a guy like Setterfield.

Yes it is frustrating, but there is a flow on affect, their picks next year will be affected. As an example, it will be like them using 15 and 37 next year to draft Setterfield this year
