It's a good point Harks, I wonder if DVR was given a senior game early in the piece if that could have helped him find a spark.
Yeah I know it wasn't "earned" but neither was Jaksch, Smith and Whiley's first games.
I remember "Slug" Jordan telling a story about watching SOS train at the Teal Cup back in the 80's and thinking that he showed nothing on the track and didn't understand the hype. That all changed when he was thrust into a competitive game and Slug knew he would be a star.
Not saying players like DVR, Gowers etc would be stars but it would have been good to see if they could step up..
I think some players need to be loved. Sounds silly but it's simply a human trait and one not all can overcome when they're made to feel on the outer.
Interesting you brought up DVR, because even at training he seemed to be on the outer........and that may have come about of his own doing......or lack of doing.....but we'll never know for sure.
My point was that we can select a terrific third-tall backman and a player with more quality than the next player selected, but if he spends two years in the VFL because Plowman, Marchbank, Byrne and Sheehan are ripping it up, his mind may start wandering and questioning his own value.
Of course you have to select the right talent, but needs basis cannot be ignored either.
