Interesting that Brodie has slipped in people's perceptions. Talked as No.1, was injured late in the year so didn't perform at his best. Still a very solid prospect who is a less risky option than SPS. The thing a like about Brodie is that he can take marks around the ground, I think that's his point of difference as a mid.. and his leadership qualities.

Picking Brodie at 5 allows us to be more risky at pick 25 with a Fisher, Bolton or Cox type. I'd be feeling anxious if our first 2 picks were used on WA kids.

I really like Zac Fisher at pick 25. He is a left footer, who finds plenty of the ball, is very clean with ball handling and disposal, and can kick goals. Reminds me of a young Zac Merrett.
Don't point at me just because I disagree with you!

Cripps doesn't mind flying the flag. Also noticed vs essendon at pp in the nab cup the younger draftees didn't mind doing it. Dare id suggest bolton would be imprinting that on them.

About time...its not difficult to do.

Bolton definitely would have an influence in terms of emphasising the importance of culture and bonding with teammates.
\The first years spent a fair bit of time at camp etc together which was a good bonding exercise...i don't recall us doing anything like that under MM or Ratts.

I also think those guys like McKay, Curnow & SOSOS who got involved in the fight naturally have that competitiveness and mongrel in them which is nice.
Our previous first round picks under Hughes didn't have that mental edge in their games...names like Lucas, Yarran, Menzel, Watson & Bootsma...you wouldn't back any of them to really stand up in a push and shove. Maybe Menzel.

Yes I remember the native animosity and violence from parochial lions all because Murphy chose the Baggers .
That scum of a Copeland almost destroyed a brilliant career.
A first year kid head down hunting the ball , just mercilessly dumped by a old campaigner.
AFL should applied a 3 to 4 months suspension as a deterrent.
Fortunately that all in the past.
Come on it is AFL not suburban footy, they can target ever who they want regardless of size or age and it clearly works on Murphy so of course they are going to do it. If Murphy wasn't ready for the rigours of AFL then that is a slight on our club for playing him not Brisbane for exploiting it

Unless he was pretty reluctant to move interstate in his interviews. Brissy might want a crack at the QLD boy.

You've doubt it though, clubs with academies would be reluctant to start p1ssing each other off.

The only counter to that is maybe the thought that they are actually helping each other by doing it.

If bids come later than expected, the academies will come under greater scrutiny from the public, other clubs & AFL HQ which might lead them to be stripped back even further.

It's in the academy clubs best interest for a bid to come around about the proper value of the player...they still get a discount and the AFL will be more likely to keep the system in place.

I'm probably being too harsh and overly critical, but is anyone else put off by Ainsworth's personality?

I remember in the 'Going Places' article them mentioning some of his team mates and coaches thought he was arrogant and didn't really click with him and he had a bad attitude when injured that was rubbing his teammates the wrong way. Apparently he didn't mean it, it was just perception.

Watched some of the videos on AFL website where draftees answer those questions and i can't recall him cracking a smile or joke at all...was stony faced unlike the others who all at least cracked a smile.

Also nominated Brisbane as a place he'd like to play at...i can see him fitting in with the likes of Rockliff, Zorko, Beams etc lol

I didn't read the article but watched the videos and heard the subsequent criticism...I didn't get a bad vibe from the videos and would trust our recruiting team to avoid any dickheads.

Good forwards are w***ers, at all levels.

Copland's thuggery on Murphy was not warranted then and would not be tolerated today.
Thankfully the AFL begins to see the light and is making necessary adjustments not only to thugs on the field and payer welfare, but prejudice to opposite sex, drug use and genearl nativism and racism, its long overdue really.
Were are slightly more sophisticated these days.

To finish the first round of picks...

#16 – Adelaide
Jordan Galluci (183cm, 75kg midfielder) Eastern Ranges

Possesses leadership and is a terrific athlete who brings pace to his in-and-out style of play. Averaged 20 disposals and kicked 1.8 goals in TAC Cup while his 422m gained at the championships ranked No. 3 of any midfielder.

#17 – Port Adelaide
Jarrod Berry (191cm, 80kg defender) North Ballarat Rebels

Leadership, athleticism, power and solid overhead marking are the traits that Berry brings with him. Can play tall or smaller in the back half or in time run through the midfield.

#18 – GWS
Tim English (203cm, 86kg ruckman) South Fremantle

Many may be surprised with English slipping so far from Fremantle’s first. Believe he will be picked up here to add to their wealth of big men coming through the ranks. Will be allowed plenty of time at GWS to transition into AFL level.

#19 – Brisbane
Alex Witherden (184cm, 78kg defender) Geelong Falcons

A classy right-footed half back with a penetrating kick, he can also push up into the midfield. He made 12 appearances for Geelong in the TAC Cup in 2015, averaging 18 disposals and seven contested possessions per match. A prolific ball winner across half back, the 189cm prospect is good offensively, but is also responsible going the other way.

#20 – Port Adelaide
Will Hayward (186cm, 76kg forward) North Adelaide

The mid-sized forward has clean hands, is a good mark on the lead and is a reliable shot at goal. He kicked eight from four games at the national championships and kicked 33 from nine games in the SANFL under 18s. He finished the season in fine fashion, kicking 13 goals from his final two matches.

#21 – Western Bulldogs
Todd Marshall (198cm, 87kg key forward) Murray Bushrangers

A 198cm prospect who is among the best key forward options in this year’s draft crop. Based on potential, he might be the best tall in the draft, but at the moment there’s a massive differential between his best and his worst. He’s a strong mark above his head and a good set-shot, but needs to add muscle.

#22 – Sydney
Shai Bolton (177cm, 67kg forward) South Fremantle

A damaging outside midfielder who has pace to burn and is extremely difficult to stop when he gets going. He’s got a slight frame, but he’s incredibly agile and can be very damaging forward of centre. Although his kicking can be erratic at times, Bolton was the best ball-carrier at the national championships, gaining 431 metres per match. Importantly, he can also win his own footy, recording a contested possession rate of above 50 per cent in the WAFL Colts.

just watched tomorrows heroes again. SPS comes across as a very special human being. He could bring an amazing thing to the blues - both on and off the fields. His ceiling is the highest in the draft. V. exciting.

SPS was considered the #1 pick from about two years ago. I was talking to a recruiter two years ago and he stated, that he has just watched the number 1 pick for this draft year. SPS is very talented and has potential to be very special.

Hate to throw a spanner in the works, Hal, but think you've given been tripped up a little by the Academy picks.

Carlton bidding on Bowes at 5 means GC lose their next pick - so Freo will have pick 8 ahead of Gold Coast.
Carlton bidding on Setterfield at 6 means GWS lose their next pick - so they don't have Pick 18 to use on English.

The later bids on Scheer and Perryman would require the use of second round or later picks, so no impact on your first round phantom.

So it should be:

1-7: No change
8: Freo
9: GC
10-17: No change
18: Bris
19: Port
20: WB
21: Syd

Curious as to whether that changes your thoughts on who goes where?
