Petrevski-Seton has a very different personality to Yarran. Much more self-confident and assured.

I think it's a very even draft that bats very deep, but lacks the top end talent of last year.
I believe Darcy Parrish would have been a clear number 1 if he was in this year's draft.

But i do believe that if Parish, McGrath, Ainsworth and SPS were 2 inches taller and 8kg heavier then they would be clear No.1 in this draft.

But they're not...and they aren't...and they wouldn't.

Specific skillsets is another pattern in this draft. If you're looking for a particular piece to add to your lineup, there are players pretty set in positions (McGrath as a half-back, McCluggage as a half-forward, Ainsworth as a small forward, Brodie as a big-bodied inside mid etc).

Almost every Top 10 selection will play straight away, and to a reasonable level. It'll be interesting to see how each player develops and whether the projections are accurate; if their ceilings are higher than anticipated.

SPS and Taranto are probably the most rounded players in this draft crop.

Just curious as to people's thoughts. Id be assuming Essendon are taking McGrath, but does anyone think Essendon should make GWS match on Setterfield first. If I was Essendon, id be doing that for sure. If I was the Lions, I would be forcing GCS to match a bid on Bowes too. It would certainly open up the draft a little more than has been predicted by many for a while now.

We've had plenty of players leave us/be shown the door for all sorts of 'cultural' reasons........yes, many non-indigenous players too.
Don't worry about your bias too much. Pretty sure SOS, Walker and co can do their jobs.

It's tuff for these kids living in Melb. How many indigenous players stay in Melb after their careers are finished. They really love it here ey.

I'm not doubting the talent. Just doubting the risk / reward factor.

Let another club havest his talent I'm sure another pick 5 will be better anyway way.

Sure I understand that, but I certainly think GWS would match on Setterfield. Just as GWS would match a bid for him from us at pick 5. Just as GCS would match a bid from the Lions for Bowes. My point being that I have seen some phantom drafts the last couple of days where Bowes isn't getting bid on until basically GCS's 4th pick. That would be a stunning result for GCS if the they didn't have to pick Bowes until their 4th pick.

Just taking a longer look at Willem Drew since he is starting to appear more consistently at our second pick.

The write ups are decent:

Player focus
Playing with great heart and an intensity that matches his red hair, North Ballarat Rebels midfielder Willem Drew -- for the second week in a row -- was named his team's best player. Drew gathered 24 disposals including 16 contested possessions, took five marks and laid nine tackles to go with a goal and score assist. As he has done all year, the 188cm midfielder played with an intensity greater than anyone else on the field.

What has been most impressive from Drew is his ferociousness on the field. Several of Drew's tackles during the game, particularly one in the final quarter, left opponents very slow to get up. His ground ball work and ability to burst through tackles at full speed is a sight to behold. In addition to his sublime inside work, it was also promising to see Drew finding space on the outside as well getting into the right positions behind the ball.

When teammate Hugh McCluggage was taken to ground by two Geelong Falcons players, Drew went straight to the aid of his teammate, pushing the two Geelong instigators back and making it clear he stood for none of that.

Analysis

Drew is viewed as a likely second or third round prospect. However, a positive draft combine along with a strong finish to the TAC Cup finals could mean Drew pushes for first-round selection.

His contested style of game, which sees him win a high percentage of ball in the tight contests, is a feature that translates to AFL level. Drew has also managed to kick 11 goals from his 12 matches this season and is certainly a marking threat forward of centre, while also having the skills required to play in the backline.

One comment several recruiters have made about Drew is, he has the habit of kicking for territory from stoppages rather than lowering his vision to hit up a target. So it is clear he needs to work on identifying targets around the ground as he will not want to continue being limited with his disposal.

If Drew can adjust his decision-making around the stoppages and provide more meaningful drives, his game will reach a whole new level.

You can miss a lot of Drew's best work on first look: he gives the ball off almost as soon as it lands in his hands at times. He takes hits, lays tackles, works hard and has the versatility to do all those things in all three parts of the ground. Can be trusted to look after an opponent and while he prefers the quick give to moving the ball has good endurance that will become a valuable trait when he is better able to use it. He's an understated player but a competitive one, whose effort doesn't vary from week to week.

Drew isn't the type of player to have a wowing highlights reel but he works his way around the ground without stress and finds the ball on a regular and consistent basis. He's clever with his hands and tough inside the contest, and as a midfielder was one of Vic Country's best players across its carnival. Drew is the nephew of former Blue Adrian Gleeson (and the cousin of current Bomber Martin), so there would be some symbolism if he headed to Carlton.

He won't get all those attributes in any player after our first pick so I think we will place a premium and competitiveness and hard work given we keep getting rid of the conditional types and then compare what attributes are left.

We can argue all we wan about who we want but at the end of the day we have no control over it. We just need to trust that the club will make the right choice. Speculating about players personalities and go home factor, etc is ridiculous. We don't know SPS' personality, to me he seems very driven and wants to succeed but I'm only speculating of course. If we do pick him and i believe we will, we have to back him in. We can't hold any grudge towards him if he doesn't perform, he never asked to be a high pick, that was just what the recruiters view him as. So lets all just stop bickering about whether he is a good or bad pick and just back SOS in and whoever we pick tomorrow night.
