Spoke to Brett Anderson, SEN Draft Expert, a little while ago who was kind enough to take my call off air.

Me: Will GWS be able to into deficit (using points from next years ND picks) to match bids on their academy players, given potential draft penalties pending for next year???

BA: It's a very good question to which I don't have a definitive answer for, but I suspect GWS were given a "heads-up" not to trade picks 15 & 37 for this year.

Me: Who will you be speaking to when you arrive in Sydney later this morning to find out???

BA: Gillon McLachlan or Mark Evans as Andrew Dillon is unlikely to be there. I'll be definitely doing some investigation when I get up there though.

Me: How many of the Academy boys do you think GWS will draft???

BA: Assuming that Essendon don't bid on Setterfield at #1, Setterfield, Perryman, Cumming & I think GWS may have made some commitment to Macreadie when they moved him to Sydney. Of course it depends where the bids come in, e.g. there's a rumour that Sydney may bid on Cumming with either #9 or #19. I think that Mutch gets to the open draft, Sproule gets to the open draft....and as do most if not all of the others. It will become very interesting though if they're unable to go into deficit and bids come early.

Me: How strong are the Phantom Drafts this year as to who you think will go where???

BA: Well for once the clubs are keeping their cards close to their chest. While Essendon will take either McGrath or McCluggage, with GWS it's much less clear. You could make a case for Taranto, Petrevski-Seton, McCluggage, McGrath, Ainsworth or even Bowes. Taranto could go as early as #2 or as late as #9. Whoever Essendon and more importantly GWS take at #2 will determine how the rest fall. Last year was easy because we had a full-blown rehearsal with the introduction of the new system so we knew who everyone was taking all the way out to #30 by the middle of the day.

Me: Know you're on the way to the airport so thanks for taking the call.

BA: Anytime and only too happy to answer peoples questions. Will definitely check out the "lay of the land" on your first question.

Good bloke Brett. Probably one of his busiest days of the year where everyone wants a piece of his time and he still found time to take my call off air on his way to the airport. Let's hope he gets a scoop on something no one else has asked about. :thumbsu:

100% agree with this.

He is a ripper.

I have a feeling SOS will pick SPS if he's still available at pick 5. We need hard at it, quick midfielders and he fits the bill.

Yeah would be stoked to get him he is exactly the type of player we need.

A midfielder who is both inside/outside who can win his own ball but also weave through traffic and accelerate from the stoppage.
A midfielder like Wells, Treloar, Hanneberry, Shiel, Dangerfield, though SPS' slight stature means he won't be as bash and crash as Danger.
Wells and Burgoyne are probably more apt comparisons as they can win contested ball but do it in a silky manner.

Arguably we don't have a single midfielder like this.
Murphy is much better suited for an outside role to use his run and skills. A bit undersized and doesn't have the big side step or 'slow down time Pendlebury style' to really make up for it. His best years were under Ratts who i think used him more outside and offensively.
Gibbs can get coontested and uncontested possessions but doesn't have the speed to really burst from stoppages or provide overlap run.
Cripps is a contested beast but he's all about getting the handball out to a player and wouldn't be able to play an outside role.
Curnow and Kerridge don't have the burst of speed or the skills to be super damaging on the outside.

SPS come on dowwwn.

Interesting where they see Ridley playing eventually, a move into the midfield would be great, but could unleash Doc to the midfield eventually if he plays in the backline.

SPS and Ridley

No need to tune in for the first little while now.

Ridley is not my preferred option at 25 but I am happy to back SOS in.

On face value it seems odd to bring in another defender but they must like his versatility and be confident he can develop into more.

From all reports he is a smooth mover and uses the ball well and you can never have enough of those traits at a football club.

In Such a deep draft and with a rebuilding list I reckon you're crazy not to pick best available in first two rounds at least

I say just get Quality and worry about list balance later

Ridley...

Ok, I see the talent just not the need. A utility without a solid position IMO

He can kick the football the accurately. We need a whole lot of that!

Ridley and SPS both potentially elite users, you look where Bolts has come from and you'll realise it makes perfect sense.

We need agile creative pressure applying Mids more than anything. The current game style is been played 360 degrees

The current top teams have 8 to 12 very good mids ie WB & GWS. Even Pies are stacking up with Mids.

Therefore, if right character and if there isn't much difference between top 6 or 7 picks, either of SPS or Ainsworth would be great pick ups in my opinion

Appreciate your thoughts:thumbsu:.

Has SPS had breakout games like Bont and Cripps?

Brodie was BOG early in the season and then played under injury. Has not torn it up but looks like he can.
Will not be disappointed with SPS and will hope he becomes the player we need.
Just not sure an Aish is the type of player we need at pick #5. Want consistent A grade output.
Nothing like Aish.

We need some good inside midfielders of the Patrick Cripps mold. To go with Murphy, Curnow, Gibbs, Cripps and Simpson would make a very good midfield.

Defence looks pretty settled with Docherty and Wietering and Rowe down there.

Kruezer should start dominating games next year if given that number 1 ruck role, but for the future another ruckman would be good.

The biggest issue is clearly the forward line. Matt Wright leading goal kicker with 22! That's not good enough. So many games in the 2nd half of the year we should of won if the forwards had taken their chances in the forward line. Silvangi will be a gun if he bulks up. A tall key position forward and some small Eddie Betts like forwards would have to be on the radar tonight.

Ridley might release Doc or Byrne into the midfield.

Looks the perfect modern defender with his height, kicking skills and ability overhead.

Too good not to pass up. Has plenty of hardness too.
