Ridley might release Doc or Byrne into the midfield.

Looks the perfect modern defender with his height, kicking skills and ability overhead.

Too good not to pass up. Has plenty of hardness too.

I just can't see that happening.
Docherty is our Hodge down back and largely organises things there already, whilst Byrne is just what we want from a modern day back-man.

Simpson won't be around forever though and Ridley looks like a wing-man to me.

Hodge spends plenty of time rotating through the midfield too. I can see Doc doing a similar thing.

Byrne may have a few more seasons down back before we tinker with his role but he's a good candidate with his kicking skills and awareness through traffic.

If we take Ridley he'll start down back and assess how he develops. He's suited to playing the Grant Birchall role.

Settling on Ridley before the draft has even happened is just so typically Carlton that it almost has to be true. I'm hoping it does happen just for the laughs alone.

He may be a good pickup, I don't know. But we really should be waiting to see what's there.

I can't believe we would have made our mind up on 25. Too many scenarios could happen. I'm keen for Ridley but if a Simpkin or Venables for example slip through that's hard to pass up

He is also holding out some small hope they will have a re-think in light of the Cripps injury as he did say Carlton suggested he plays very similar to Cripps but want a different mix.

TWO ******* CRIPPS - NOW THAT WOULD BE EXCITING!!!!

Edit: We could also play Cripps as our KPF

Got my hopes up on SPS now, after changing my mind a gazillion times. Like that he has skills and desire for both and inside and outside roles. And good disposal. In addition to the support the club are putting in place for all recruits, can see Bolts getting SPS and JP talking with Cyril. How they can maintain links with family and culture from Melbourne, what it takes to get fit and deal with injuries, how good it is to win a premiership, taking the game on and playing team roles, etc etc.

Good luck SOS and recruiting posse.

Late thoughts:

#5 - SPS or if anybody shakes loose out of McCluggage, Ainsworth or Taranto. Would be okay if we took Brodie though.
#25 - Have come back to Gallucci again. His athleticism and workrate impress me and he is a true midfielder. Just as happy with the pace and ex factor of Bolton and Ridley because of his clean hands and disposal even though he has played mostly across half back. Drew wouldn't be awful either. Also Cox to keep SPS company hailing from the same place. Not a bad player either.

Why all the love for ridley im not a fan at all looks to me like another bootsma not cut out for afl football there are 20 other players i would take before him pick 25 has to be a ball getting inside mid for me if we take sps at 5

Matt Rendell says this is an incredibly deep draft. Says it's the best top 20 he's ever seen and says some very good players will be taken in the 40s and 50s. This is what I have been looking for for weeks now, hearing from the horses mouth how strong this draft pool is. Bodes well for all clubs so let's hope SOS can jag talent with later picks.

Reads the flight well, interceptor mark, versatile, clean hands with the ball at his feet and excellent kick. Bootsma wasn't rated where we took him, Ridley is.

Just saw some footage of Brodie, BOG in a VFL game, would compliment our midfield.
Just to much talent in this draft and I keep changing my mind.
No matter who is selected with our first we will end up with a long term prospect and with our second we will also end up with a talented player, the draft runs really deep this year.

im hoping for a surprise and we get taranto or scrimshaw at 5.

25 will be interesting. i feel someone rated 10-15 will slip through.

with the late pick there is some real excitement machines. a lebois narkle baker or even poholke will be good gets.

going to be interesting. will there be a name that no one has thought of? I'm going in with a completely open mind.

It's not that I feel Docherty isn't capable but that he's now just become too important in his role/s down back.

I think we'll be talking about Byrne in the mid-field as much as we did about Tuohy.......and we know that just didn't come about.....and won't.
