Offering up next year's first rounder is something we really should try and avoid. Next year's second rounder if clubs are interested in it, I wouldn't mind giving it up if it means gaining that additional top 10 pick for this year.

would gws take this years and next years 2nd rounders for steele marchbank stewart & tomlinson? given our position it could be two picks around 20. with points etc it may suit them.

GWS have some nice academy prospects next year as well, so they would not be against gaining some future draft picks.

The hard part for Carlton is we want to win, but it would also be helpful if we did not rise up the ladder too quickly. If we float around 10-8th on the ladder, you don't get that elite talent.

I would not mind in the second half of this year and the following year giving a few more kids some time to show them what it takes at AFL level. Like SOS jnr this weekend.

Their supporters would say no. The rumour was our first and second this year so two seconds probably doesn't cut it. 2 seconds and a third though .... depends where they need them. Since we have two thirds this year, it would seem ideal but they will want to start accumulating points for next year.

Only 2 ways I can think of to get another top 10 pick:

1 - Trade Gibbs to GWS for the Pies pick.
2 - Trade Casboult and our second rounder for a first rounder. Trade Everitt/Touhy for a second rounder. On trade that first and second rounder for a top 10 pick.
Not this again. Gibbs is going nowhere. If you want to get another 1st round pick, you are going to have to find another player to trade.

The likes of Sidebottom, Talia, Cripps, even Cyril, were all drafted with picks outside the Top 8.

You certainly don't want to be floating around 10th-8th on the ladder for any length of time, but finishing there as part of your rise up the ladder won't necessarily exclude you from elite talent.

I think even if we pick up the GWS 4, we need to draft two more players?
So that is 6 people on our main list being removed.

Tutt
Foster
Smith
Jones
Whiley
Rainbow

Those would be the most likely names removed.

Byrne also has to be elevated. I think drafting 3 is desirable. Then we look at whether we go 38-6, 39-5 or 40-4 with our senior/rookie list configuration.

I certainly think we are not back at the stage where we draft minimal kids.

I think we can draft 2 and upgrade 1 and that meets our 3 draft quota for the draft.

Do you think a team that has as much work to do as we did just a few months ago, can afford to be trading in a 20, 21, 22 and 23 year old and forego getting 18 year olds?

I certainly think we have enough C players to do the trade and get in more than two 18 year olds through the draft.

It would certainly be a different way of rebuilding from a very low base. Wasn't the way Hawthorn did it for example. Mind you, I do appreciate that the GWS situation is unique.

We don't have anyone else.
In that case we won't be trading for another 1st round draft pick.

I think we should wait until late in the season/post season to see if any of our players put their hand up for a trade.

We were fortunate last year that both Hendo & Yaz wanted out, making it easy to stock up on draft picks. I don't think we are going to have the same options this year. SOS is going to have to be creative to increase our draft options.

Agreed in how he plays now is similar but i think sides can teach him to be a different if not better type than Robbo

I was referring to leadership and intelligence. Not the first things I think of when I think of Robbo.

I'm a fan of Steele, Tomlinson and Marchbank, so I don't mind the trade to be honest. It improves our list profile age wise.

I think for one or two picks, we're having three roles of the dice. Steele as a jnr looked as good as those ranked 5+ in this draft. Marchbank would have been top 2 or 3 defenders in this draft. Tomlinson, top 3 or 4 talls from this draft.

It's highly unlikely that we'll be offering Gibbs up. So that's why I think the second option I posted is a more realistic approach even though it takes a bit more luck to go our way.

Here's another one I've thought of:

GC have Melbourne's first round pick for this year iinm. They also obtained a few second round picks for this year's draft last year as well which means they are interested in a lot of academy prospects. If Melbourne finishes 10th, then GC will end up with Pick#9 = 1469 points. If we offer up Pick #23 (815pts) + Pick #41 (412pts) + Pick #49 (287pts) that totals to: 1514 points.

That leaves us with Pick #4-#5 + Pick #9. Then we have options. We can either hang onto Pick #9 OR depending on where the Pies finish, we offer up Pick #9 + Next year's 2nd rounder to GWS for the Pies first rounder (only if it gives us Pick #6 and no later).

I'd be pretty happy with that. If we want to chase another second rounder, we have players like Everitt, Casboult, Boekhorst or Touhy to offer up.

I doubt any clubs would want to trade their first rounders next year given the group of kids that are coming through.

Even more reason we should hang onto it then. Keep in mind though, the same thing was being said about this year's draft last year...

Much more elite top end talent next year. This years goes deep, but a much more even spread of talent.

We don't have anyone else.

If we go by the second scenario I posted, it's a bit more complex but could also work...

although i think its unlikely that gibbs would be traded i would be surprised if anything is off the table. sos is about improving the list and if an offer for gibbs (or even kruezer) came through that would benefit us going forward i reckon he would do it.

i still think sos will do some deals that will surprise all of us

I see. With next year's draft then, how much elite talent do you think will be available? I know it's tough to tell from now but just roughly, do you think top 10 and then it drops off? Or does it look to be a bit further than that?

No room for Dick in there..........and Jones gets raised again....

Factor in 2 possible retirees and a few rookies to move on and there's plenty of spots to be filled.

On specific numbers i'm not sure. I just know that next years group at the pointy end of the draft will be very good.

Jones is contracted for next year and we may have to hold on to him. :'(

Thanks for that. There's about 10 players there that they've listed as the early stand outs, four of them being midfielders.

Keeping our first pick next year is a must.

You can add Sam Hayes to that list as well. He's a 200cm key forward that can go into the ruck.
