Granted, but overlooking quality for height is folly. Quality, skill, a good kid and above all a great footy brain is the only metric players should be measured on. Sure, if two player with just about the same qualities were presented to you, you'd take the bigger one every day. But a gun little fella over a big "athlete" well then you'd take the gun.

But is he a gun ?? I just don't think so.

Added to that, I don't think there are any of the mids/small forwards in this draft pool who really standout, they all appear to have some flaws which are at odds of what the club has said they will be targeting.

Would take Caleb Daniel over most similarly aged players up to 15cm taller than him every day of the week.

Ainsworth - 179cm (given his age, he may well still have a few cm left in him)

Just for comparison:

Barry Cable - 168cm
John Platten - 170cm
Bob Skilton - 171cm
Brent Harvey - 172cm
Tom Hafey - 173cm
Kevin Bartlett - 175cm
Greg Williams - 176cm
Darrel Baldock - 177cm
Leigh Matthews - 178cm
Daniel Kerr - 178cm
Ron Barassi - 179cm
Ben Cousins - 179cm
Paul Chapman - 179cm
Ian Stewart - 179cm
Sam Mitchell - 179cm
Wayne Johnson - 180cm
Luke Power - 180cm
Jack Steven - 180cm
Craig Bradley - 180cm
Marc Murphy - 180cm
Gavin Wanganeen - 181cm
Andrew McLeod - 181cm
Dylan Sheil - 182cm
Gary Ablett Jr - 182cm
Joel Selwood - 182cm
Rory Sloane - 183cm
Michael Voss - 183cm
Tom Rockliff - 183cm
Robbie Gray - 183cm

Yep, too small. Should be overlooked for a 195cm "athletic" type. Your obsession with height as the be all and end all of a players potential is as baffling as it is grossly inaccurate and frustrating.

Polly Farmer was 191cm

The game has changed since Barry Cable played. We have a gun midfielder who would of played CHF in the old days, key position players are now taller again.

That gun midfielder is slow as far as midfielders go. He is a gun inside mid who may be able to pinch hit forward on occasion, but he isn't a gun inside mid with breakaway pace. Very few of the tall ones are. That's what made Judd so special in his early years. Plenty of gun mids who are 6 footers still around.

Don't disagree entirely, just think we are better served trying to get (a) a genuine mid & (b) one who is more around that 186-188cm size.

They have more weight & bulk which can be a huge advantage in the clinches.

189cm! Same as Judd.

Scary isn't it.

This is why I keep talking about the game changing, there are eras & fads that take over for short & long periods.

Right now, the fad is for big-bodied mids & even bigger key position players. Eventually the wheel will fully turn and there will be a return to the mosquito fleet but till that happens, we need to go tall.

The size of the mid is not as important as the player's dive to win & aggression at the ball. We need more competitive beasts that love the competition & have to win at all costs. No use having a big mid that isn't aggressive to win the ball. Murph isn't tall & wins his own ball.....

Sure thing, but Sam Mitchell is just about the best in the business, how tall is he? Just because there are big midfielders, it doesn't mean that is always the best option.

Anybody against picking Patrick Kerr with our second pick ? . Or is that too early ? Probably depending on what we do in the trade period . Saw a small sample of his play in the champs he looks a good prospect good size although not sure of his height quite mobile good mark and very good kick ? And a bluebagger as well . And also an option long term at chf ?

I'm okay with Kerr in the 2nd round. Like the romance of it and he has great hands.

SOS was one such person, but a variety of pundits have either floated that or pointed to someone who has.

If this is the case, then I would not be too disappointed if we traded pick 4 (5) for GWS players (assuming at least 1 is rated VERY highly), or even for 2 picks in the teens (assuming we are of the view we can get good players in the teens).

Me too, but, only if best available.
In saying that, if the degrees of difference are miniscule, then happy to go the FS bec I am of the view FSs will 'try harder', as odd as that sounds. And rew Gaze made this point last week.

fads come and go, quality players will be quality whether they are big or small. Hawthorn doesn't have monster midfielders or monster forwards or monster defenders, they have a combination of ball winning, elite skills, speed and smarts. They're aiming for 4 flags in a row.

If we follow fads we might find that in 5 years when our window is open we backed the wrong horses. If we follow fads what is our point of difference? Look at all the flag winning teams, there is no common denominator other than the mix I described above.

I speak from experience, I have watched AFL at the highest level.

Malifice should be happy with the work Lemmingmaster is doing in the trial draft on the draft and trading board .
Battle selected with our 2nd rounder pick 23 .

He's let us down again............We need another recruiter.............sakc Lemming :)

Why has he not been talked about as an earlier pick ? doesnt get enough of it whats his downside if any ? He looked really good from the little i saw .
Listed at only 190cm(?), so more in the SOSOS/CCurnow category. Marshall and Battle seem the only KPFs predicted to go top 20 and that might be a size thing.

He selected Ainsworth with our 1st pick to give us a pretty handy looking forward line going forward .

Battle McKay Sumner
Ainsworth C.Curnow J.Silvagni

*B.Silvagni in the pipeline .

If we can lure Marchbank this trade period it also rounds out a good looking defense going forward .

Simpson Marchbank Plowman
Docherty Weitering Byrne

That then leaves the midfield to be attacked in future drafts from 2017 onwards as well as selected recruiting raids and FA .
