Im also hearing around the traps that Mil Hannas boy is coming through the Calder Cannons and was selected in the Vic Metro U16's to
Now that will be good to see...

The HUN made a point of saying he is 195cm, 1cm taller than his Dad. True or not, he is growing fast.

Will definitely hit the magic 196cm barrier. Maybe we don't have to go looking for another key forward at the pointy end of the draft.

2 years and we get him... We don't need another tall forward just yet. Cas will go another 3-4 years easily by which time Ben will have at least 1 years worth of development under his belt and McKay will be rocking it at AFL level.

Which would also mean we don't need to trade in Stewart as part of the GWS4Mk2.

Stewart isn't a target for us. Taking his contract is potentially a way to get the others cheaper, much like Lamb and Sumner last year. He would also be depth for the rest of his contract. He looked good last year and GWS have an embarrassment of riches.

Jones has a year left on his contract. Jaksch perhaps about to get another run at senior football. McKay needs time. Gorringe isn't a pure forward. Charlie maybe a third tall. Silvagni a third tall. A year or two with Stewart won't hurt us. He will have made it or failed before McKay really hits his straps.

How many sons does Mil have because Max is supposedly only about 11 or 12.

And he is playing U16s? Gun, sign him up.

But yes, Max is about 11 as he was 8 some time in 2013 when he attended our academy according to some article.

Some things that may yet happen:

1. Essendon receives a first rounder for Hurley (Effectively pick#1, giving them the top 2 picks)
2. Brisbane receive a priority (They won't but you never know)
3. No-one bids for the Academy guys. (May happen once and maybe even twice)

Our early pick may not end up quite as early.

How does * get a first round selection for Hurley? They either trade him out or he walks for no compensation as a dfa.....

We could really use one or two elite F/S propects to come through on our list.
Could mean we could trade our first pick in the 2018 draft for an extra first rounder in the 2017 draft ( Looking like a very strong draft ), then do as the northern clubs do with there academy players and use a bunch or later picks to take Ben.

So hang on, knowing we had a blue chip father-son prospect coming through we could trade away that year's first-rounder in advance, allowing us to select our man with a second round pick?

Points system.
If someone bids earlier, we have to make up the points to get him at that selection.

That may sound simple enough but there's some work in finding the points to make up if someone else offers up pick #1 (3000 points)

We match the bid, apply a 20 percent discount, and the pay the point value with our next pick. If that doesnt pay for all of it, we then cycle through our next pick and so forth till the player is payed for. Excess points carry over to the next round.

Assuming we have pick 10 and 28 and someone bids pick 5 on Ben.

We can elect to match the bid. If we do, Pick 5 is worth 1878 points. Applying the 20 percent discount leaves around 1500 points that we have to pay. Our next live pick is Pick 10 (worth 1395 points) so that gets lost. The remaining 100 odd points then get subtracted from our next live pick at 28 (677 points) pushing it back to around pick 33 (563 points).

We gain pick 5 (Ben Silvagni) and 33, and lose picks 10 and 28.

Personally, If we're ever a chance to grab a father son at a high pick (before our first round pick) I would be inclined to trade our first rounder out that year for a frst rounder the following year, and then trade as many fringe players out for more second and third round picks that year to pay for the points.

It works like this. Assume Ben (in his draft year) is likely to go top 3. We hold picks 10 and 28. I would trade out pick 10 to a team (Melbourne?) for their first round pick the following year. I'd then offload 2 x 26+ year old players for second and third round picks (lets say picks 20 and 48), and pay for Ben with our two second rounders and one third rounder. Assume Ben gets bid on with pick 2.

Pick 2 = 2517 points (2000 with discount). Pick 20, 28, 40 = (912, 677, 429) around 2000 points.

In effect we would wind up trading 20, 28 and 40 for pick 2.

Even better, the following year, we would have 2 x first rounders to play with.

Good summary but a big difference between pick #1 and #5. 1122 points to be exact.

Easy for those sorts of numbers to cause a few issues along the way....and maybe even having to dip into the following years points.

Not going to happen but we sell off our first for next year and finish 16th the following year.
Can't be bothered doing the numbers but you can see that it could cause issues.

As long as we get an extra second and thrid rounder, we'll be sorted. Adding picks 27 and 47 to picks 28 and 46 gets us a total of [653, 677, 331, 316] = 2000 points (enough to pay for pick 2 with the discount).

We trade our current 1st rounder in Bens year (say pick 10) for a future 1st rounder the following year in exchange of around the same value the next year, not the other way around. Its a way of shielding it, letting us pay for a top 3 pick with 2nd and 3rd rounders, while retaining the use of an extra first rounder for use in a future draft.

Who's opening up the 2018 draft thread? It's not too early is it?
