Can you get Time on Ground stats for the U18 championship games. Watching the VM v WA game, Venables does seem to be off the ground a bit (only watched up to him getting injured late in the second so far so not sure if he comes back on or not) or playing deep in the forward line.

I think he has a really good inside game so I wonder why he is not getting put in there more often. Maybe because there are others who need the exposure more (Bunker is always in there) or maybe because he has forward ability that others don't have.

Really hard to get a fair read on him. I just hope that people see moments the commentators say recruiters look for and project what he might do with more time in the middle.

It seemed to me that there were several players that just disappeared for long periods of time.......Venables definitely one of them.

I was keeping an eye on Venables especially and so looked for him in the wide shots and he wasn't in a lot of them, anywhere on the ground. He was named on the bench and I think with his drafting certain, maybe others were getting more of a run.

As I said Luke Bunker was constantly in the centre and they don't have as many numbers in there at this level and while he has had a good championships, doesn't get the mentions of a lot of others so I could see they are really trying to get him front and centre.

Callum Twomey on Venables

Midfielder/half-forward Western Jets/Vic Metro
186cm
81kg
19/11/1998

Possessing pace, agility, power and toughness, Venables has an exciting combination of skills for a midfielder. He also has the height and shape to be used at half-forward or half-back, and has shown his natural ability around goal. Some injuries over the past year have limited his exposure but he has the raw ability to match it with the best his age. He continues to gain more game awareness with each week.

Would suit: Venables been identified as a possible top-10 pick due to his unique mix. A tall and powerful midfielder adds up to make an appealing prospect.

So he sees him as a midfielder as well and I note he is a bottom ager.

To the question, who will the Blues take with their first pick.

Twomey: Will the Blues have their first pick??? We'll see. At this stage they would be getting a nice player with that top-10 - Venables perhaps, Ainsworth maybe to add some class up forward, McGrath would be a nice pick.

Really ties into the rumour mill with the GWS trade but if not, pleased to see that 2 of the ones I am leaning to for us are in the 3 he thinks we could go for. Mind you, he has also suggested Saints might go for Venables as they need a taller more physical midfielder since they got Gresham last year.

All about perception I suppose. First time I saw SPP I thought of Martin.

Twomey answered a query about him like this: Powell-Pepper divides opinion among clubs. His power and tenacity make him appealing for some, and he started the champs in a blaze of glory against Vic Country. But he can lack composure at times and just blast the ball forward.

That description still sounds like Robbo. :D

2016 NAB AFL UNDER-18 ALL AUSTRALIAN TEAM

DEFENDERS
Alex Villis (South Australia), Jack Maibaum (Vic Metro), Sam Walker (South Australia)
Andrew McGrath (Vic Metro), Brennan Cox (South Australia), Harry Perryman (Allies)

MIDFIELDERS
Zac Fisher (Western Australia), Tim English (Western Australia), Jack Graham (South Australia)
Will Brodie (Vic Country), Hugh McCluggage (Vic Country), Jack Bowes (Allies)

FORWARDS
Daniel Venables (Vic Metro), Josh Battle (Vic Country), Dylan Clarke (Vic Metro)
Callum Brown (Vic Metro), Patrick Kerr (Vic Metro), Tim Taranto (Vic Metro)

INTERCHANGE

Jonty Scharenberg (South Australia), Kobe Mutch (Allies), Sam Hayes (Vic Metro), Jordan Gallucci (Vic Metro)

Does that feel like they threw some names in ... because they had names? I think a couple of lesserlights might be unlucky there.

Kerr looking to be just outside the first round now. I don't think he is obtainable which is a shame.

Edit: Sorry it looks like I am spamming the thread. I sort of expect this thread to be moving faster and am adding discussion points as I read them or quoting others as I read posts.

Starting to warm to him as well.
Hard to really tie one or two players down this year because it's such an even top 15 or so.

No doubt it won't work out this way and from limited viewing, right now I'd go this way for us:

1. Brodie
2. McCluggage
3. McGrath
4. Clarke
5. Petrevski-Seton

Smokie: James Worpel. Just saw a little Rory Sloane about him yesterday.

EDIT: ooops. Worpel isn't eligible this year. One to watch next year along with Hayes.

Top 5 non academy players is close. Might see Ainsworth in there though. Certainly Brodie, McCluggage and SPS will be top 5.

I was thinking about Carlton and not so much a draft order.

Who would you want as your top 5 for Carlton?

That's a different question to who you might expect to be available for Carlton.

Bear in mind, I haven't finished watching some of the games. Just watching quarter by quarter at this stage. Didn't see Brodie's last game yet and he apparently stood out so reserve the right to alter my thinking a little.

I want players with different strings to their bow but I want them to have inside mid toughness, then skills, then pace, then versatility.

McGrath plays a lot out of the backline but is also quite inside but maybe not as solid physically. SPS could be anything, but maybe a cream player rather than a lift the team over the line player. McLuggage is more outside, maybe a little bit of Didak there.

I also wouldn't mind another key forward. Patrick Kerr looks fantastic. All of his profiles seem to suggest he is 190cm but I heard Kevin Sheehan say he was 194cm today. Where I place him depends greatly on those extra centimetres.

I am liking:

1. Venables - inside mid/forward - tough, quick, loves big moments, good kick, scoreboard pressure
2. Ainsworth - forward/mid - tough, developed, quick, finishing skills, scoreboard pressure, leadership
3. Brodie - inside mid - big, powerful, quick, decent skills
4. Kerr - KPF - mobile, good contested mark, good goal sense, improved ground level skills
5. Bunker - inside mid - looks to be a clearance specialist, good football brain, tenacity, positions himself well
6. Taranto - inside/outside mid/forward - versatile, pacy, finishing skills, scoreboard pressure

I have to add that I have seen little of Scharenberg who everybody is jumping on, but what I did see didn't do much for me. Again, will have to watch the early SA games.

Agree, thought these two were very impressive along with Dylan Clarke, also liked Koby Mutch, Fisher and Worpel, Worpel is bottom age though I think? Is he eligible this year?

If we could snag another couple of picks in the 20-30 range, some of these names will be there.

Venables ahead of Brodie? Interesting.
No McCluggage? Reckon he's just what we need.
Bunker looks good but didn't have something that screamed 'Pick me'.....to me.
Ainsworth looks great but just seems somewhat limited to me. McGrath seems to make more things happen from my viewing.

Whichever way, I'm thrilled for this upcoming draft.
Feel we're going to look upon it as having been one of the better ones.

We all latch on to someone that captures our imagination. I've opted for a player with the big game moments to show consistency when allowed to play in the midfield more often, as opposed to the high productivity midfielder but have conceded I haven't watched enough of Brodie so could change my mind.

I had no knowledge of Venables before the champs and am usually looking to confirm what I have read about other more fancied players than find a new favourite. In fact, I was set on not liking him based on phantom drafts placing him high when I hadn't heard of him. He had to win me over and did that very quickly.

McCluggage is outside and needs to develop physically. I want inside toughness first up. McLuggage has work rate so is not exactly a Menzel prospect, but we have Cuningham and Boekhorst to come back and I am not sure we have enough workers to get the ball to someone like McCluggage in a way he can use it to maximum effect. That is not to say he isn't a better player. Just don't know if he is the right player for where we are at.

Keen on Brodie.

Any chance on Gallucci sliding to our 2nd pick.

Before yesterday I would have said, some chance. Now I am thinking somewhere between 12-20.

I reckon that my plan of trading for a 2017 first round pick to chase Worpel would be a good plan. He is quite physical and appears to have reasonable (at this point) disposal.

McCluggage is the most classical footballer i can think of since maybe Bob Murphy and Jason Akermanis.

Movement, reading, one touch, and absolute precise finishing. He makes playing high level football look easy.

He has great scope from here as he is new to high level footy just this year and is coming off no pre-season due to a back complaint.

No1 on my list. Then Brodie, SPS and Bowes.....then a small but significant gap. Then Venables, Ainsworth and McGrath.

None of the big guys grab me as a genuine Top 10, although Marshall will probably rightly be taken by a Club with a need(like us with Harry).
