Who are three to four players that you are expecting to be available at say pick #25+?

Well any from the following list:

Jy Simpkin, Tim Taranto, William Drew, Sam Powell-Pepper, Jordan Gallucci, Dylan Clarke, Shai Bolton, Jarrod Berry, Oli Florent, Scharenberg, Graham, Zac Fisher are all players I think could be around. Each has a knock on them in some regard (as most AFL players do)

Florent probably stands out, I have taken a liking to him, but he might be a 40+ prospect, good endurance, moves well as a high half-forward.

I reckon Brodie will go inside the top 4 so #5 might not be high enough.

I floated the idea because for me #4 is about where the field starts to level out. Petrovski-Seton, Brodie, McLuggage and Ainsworth are my top prospects. After them I really like Scrimshaw, Taranto, Simpkin, Clarke and Gallucci. I am pretty sure at least two of those guys would still be around in the 20's with how diverse and differently rated this field is.

For example I notice several posters like Scharenberg this year, for me he lacks a point of difference, except perhaps a good goal sense, but Nick Graham has that and it hasn't seen him rise above our pack.

TL;DR... Trade lots for young guns (4 picks in the top 17)

Pipe dreams?
Probably, but there's no harm in dreaming!

Would be very happy if our trade/draft period went something like that. Would hate to see Kruz go but you need to give up quality to gain quality and he won't be around for our next premiership imo.

On the AFL website its says we are looking for a back up ruckman and looking at Downie from GWS. How many ruckman do we need? Does this mean we could trade Kreuzer? How many GWS players can we trade for?

Given Kreuzer is injured a lot, Phillips hasn't made it ... yet and has also had injuries, Wood was rookie listed and will almost certainly be gone at the end of the year and Korcheck is a million miles away from a call up .... AND we had to play Gorringe there against North and his is not ruckman, I reckon we can afford to improve in this area.

And none of them are contracted beyond 2017.

Didn't we reach for H McKay to kill 2 birds with one stone?

I thought we recruited him as a KPF/Roaming tall. If he rucks, it will be out of necessity and not for a couple of years yet.

mckay is tippett height. not unreasonable to suspect he will spend significant time in the ruck during his career.

i wouldn't be writing off gorringe just yet. how many minutes in the vfl does he get to ruck alongside wood and korcheck...

Further to my argument about this being a diverse field let me just report the rankings of players 20-30 from a few phantom drafters:

Knightmare (Power Rankings):

Dylan Clarke
Jack Graham
Tim English
Harrison MacReadie (GWS)
Jy Simpkin
Alex Witherden
Josh Rotham
Jacob Allison (Bris)
Shai Bolton
Zac Fisher
Jake Pitman

Bishop:

Kobe Mutch (GWS)
Patrick Kerr
Zachary Sproule (GWS)
Griffin Logue
Jonty Scharenberg
Jordan Gallucci
Alex Witherden
Jack Graham
Joseph Atley
Declan Watson (Bris)
Zac Fisher

DraftMe:

Kobe Mutch (GWS)
Jy Simpkin
Dylan Clarke
Jordan Gallucci
Jonty Scharenberg
Jack Graham
William Drew
Tim Taranto
Joseph Atley
Zach Sproule (GWS)
Alex Witherden

Chris25:

Sam Powell-Pepper
Harrison Perryman (GWS)
Jack Graham
Tim English
Tim Taranto
Griffin Logue
Alex Witherden
Josh Battle
Jordan Gallucci
Kym LeBois
Alex Villis

Foj1 (Only the last 5 from his top 25):

Josh Williams
Harry Perryman
Jy Simpkin
Steven Slimmin
Brad Scheer

That's a pretty diverse set of picks, a few players recur (Graham, Witherden) but there is a lot of variety in who slides out.

I think 4 picks with this possible board is not a bad thing at all, rather then getting 1 shot at a top 10 (many of the prospects are thought by some to slide out to here in the 20's) and 1 shot in the 20's

Their power rankings are different to their draft orders though.

Agreed, but its pretty fraught guessing at draft strategy with so much of the season to play, and the entire off-season to come.

I like the power rankings more a) because more people put them up atm b) because knowing the quality of player is more relevant to the discussion then where they will go at the moment, because my argument is that there will be quality players around in the 20's, whether or not the players listed above are, because if they aren't, players projected to go before them, and thought more talented by some draft watchers, will be around.

Don't mind me, I missed the 20-30 part and was wondering why so many top names were missing.

I really like Gallucci. His strengths are something that we really lack at the moment.

Gorringe has been better than I expected this year. Thought he was almost a sympathetic pickup.

But clearances are not one of those strengths. He has some early Bryce Gibbs polish but what do we need more?

But leg speed and crisp disposal are. One of the goals he kicked down at Geelong was pretty damn nice. Got the ball about 70m out, burned of a chasing opponent and drilled it from 40m out. I realise that Boekhorst and Cuningham can provide this also, but need more quality players with leg speed.

The Lions game, I swear if the game went an extra 15 minutes he would have torn the game apart. Reckon he had 3 big contested marks in the last quarter. Sometimes with talls, especially those who maybe thrive off confidence, all it can take is one quarter and they can emerge to dominate.

I reckon VFL hurts him, as the delivery is poor.

I don't see him as a ruck. I see him as a forward. Would like to see him be played as a forward in the senior side at some stage. Arguably better to hold him back until we have a more dominant, or at least competitive midfield. He, like our other forwards, would struggle right now, and I just think given his temperament it would be better to wait for a better time.

I could be wrong, but I thought I saw something that game against Lions.

No guarantee Gorringe will be on the list next year but he's only raw at 26 games and younger than Rowe, Wood, Everitt, Casboult and Jones. An athletic tall who hasn't quite found a position but could perform a variety of roles should some or all of those be moved on by trade, retirement or delisting.

Will be good for 5-10 games a season for the next 3 years in the backup category, shielding McKay from additional duties.

Anyhow as far as the draft goes, Callum T blushes at the mention of Tim English, who seemingly would be a steal at pick 23 if he were to slide that far.

Trade Kruezer for probably late 2nd round or early 3rd round pick and or upgraded picks.
Casboult out for a late pick of some description (anything basically. Who's gonna make a big offer for someone that repeatedly misses from 20m?)
Wood gone.
That leaves us with Phillips and Gorringe.
Trade for best quality, young number one ruckman that WANTS to come to Carlton.
All other trades should be aimed at getting as many top 25 picks as possible to get pacey mids that can use the ball well.
FWIW, I think we need mids before a Battle type cos we have Silvagni and Curnow who can do a similar role.
Hopefully McKay will show a bit before the end of the year and stay injury free which will leave the recruiting team to focus on young mids that can deliver to the forward line at AFL standard.
