The problem with this sort of player is that they are icing on a cake, not the cake itself. A lot of talented flankers, goal kickers, x factor players stagnate when the bones of a side is a long way from being completed. The one thing SPS can do that Menzel and Yarran couldn't is play in the midfield. He won't help with out contested ball or clearances though.

So is he the cake or the icing.....a bit of both....or neither of? :) (Note smiley face)

Watched SPS pretty close the other day and even though it wasn't a highlight performance, his work on the outside of stoppages was impressive.
The talent is clear and should he be there at our pick, I can see us reading his name out pretty quickly even though we may need the inside mid first.

Which is precisely why we need 2 top 10 picks this year. If SPS or even McCluggage are available at our pick, we'd be hard pressed to pass on them. If we can get pick#8 or #9 then Venables is also a chance.

We could add SPS and Venables.

Hopefully the rumours about Touhy going to Sydney for Mitchell are true. Adding Mitchell, SPS and Venables would be crazy!

I havent seen the kid play, but from what I have read he has elite foot skills on both sides of his body and likened to Burgoyne. Would that be a better comparison than rioli?

Inside mids like Matt Crouch, Parker, Neale can be found with our 2nd pick, so who cares if SPS is more outside, at least he could hit SOS on the chest from pretty much anywhere.

Not to say he won't become a player, but why Venables?
I ask from a point of ignorance but from what I've seen, he has chosen when he wants to go and when he doesn't.
Is this right? He doesn't seem like a 100% player to me.

I don't think he chooses when to go or not. If anything he finds himself competing in the air with tall defenders and doing 1%ers.

I have also seen him overlooked multiple times when positioning himself around contests.

Now maybe his tank needs to improve, maybe his positioning needs work, maybe he needs to be setlled in a position but I really don't think he is conditional.

Tough as teak, explosive, big game player. He could seriously be developed into a Dangerfield for mine.

Fair enough. I'm not convinced but neither were 9 clubs before Dangerfields selection in 2007

I understand Ainsworth has just taken his HBF poster off the wall.

Discussing HBF and the draft in the same sentence...

...I wonder if Shane Rogers just got a shiver down his spine.

THIS^^

HARKER I too see glimpses of Dangerfield in the way he goes about it.

I also like the idea of having Cripps, C.Curnow and Venables in the same side. All capable of being big bodied mids and they can rest in the forward line. Ideally, I'd keep Cripps in the guts and have Charlie and Venables rotate being mid and forward to rest. It's a long shot but if we do end up with Mitchell and SPS as well, I think that would make a dynamic and formidable midfield and forward line combo.

Then next year we need to try and get 2 top 10 picks again. We keep the pick we get and we can try and get the other by offering up our 2018 first rounder along with something else. Target best mid available with our first pick and spend the second on another area in need, maybe a damaging, speedy small forward...

Given I like bigger midfielders with talent, would not mind if we use our 3rd round pick to get Brodie Romensky. 189cm backman now enjoying midfield time got a huge 36 possessions and seven tackles on the weekend for the Jets.

Venables worries me, effort-wise.

I like Scrimshaw though. Shades of Bontempelli

I'm big on Jack Scrimshaw too. His coming back from injury, so has got a lot of hype going yet.
He moves well, his very clean with the footy and has a beautiful long left foot kick.
Think he will move into the midfield later in the year in TAC cup, playing for Stingrise.
He could really bolt up the draft boards, if he shows he could make it as a tall inside mid.

I suppose the last thing we want is another HB, so unless he can show something in the midfield then I reckon there might be better options out there, particularly if we get the 4th pick.

Dylan Clarke looks like the second best contested/clearance player, behind Will Brodie.
Clarke is not far off him when it comes to winning the footy, Brodie is just classier with ball in hand.
Still a lot to like with Dylan and at 187cm his a good size and ticks a lot of the boxes.
Not looking likely he'll be available in the second round. Think his a late first rounder ATM
IMO he is the 2nd or 3rd best player, who would add some support for Cripps around the clearances.

At 4 his not in the conversation ATM. We need a player or two to bolt into the top 5.
It will push the players already in that pick range down a few spots. Think Tim English and Todd Marshall could be a chance to bolt into the top 5.
Essendope would consider a key forward or a ruckman.
I'm hoping SOS will really push to get another pick in the first round.
This draft has a lot of potential for us. Lots of good player that suit our needs. We just need to get the right picks.

Just watched the highlights of the main targets and I'd be keen on Brodie Mcluggage Venables Galluci - in that order.

What gap?

Can go for another 2-3 years.
I hope so.

Maybe I just like what I have seen from McGrath too much

would be worth drafting scrimshaw just to say that each time he does something worthwhile

As stupid as this question seems right now.....what's next years draft pool like?

Are we better off trading out next years first rounder to get extra picks this year?
Our midfield has more holes than Swiss cheese at the moment and if this is a "midfield" year then maybe we should stock up with kids and hit free agency next year?
