Kidding right?
Our over riding need is for high volume, classy, bankable mids and takes a small forward and another project tall(ish) forward

We do take some of what's supposed to be a little fun, so seriously. :)
Given the same situation, who would have you taken?

At this stage and with limited viewing, I would have gone McGrath and Powell-Pepper or Kerr.

Lots are dropping off Powell-Pepper, but I really liked what I saw. Reckon he's hit his low and will start moving back up the rankings.

Debate will rage as to whether Ainsworth is the best player in the draft. If he does step up as a midfielder AND kick 35 goals a season we might have ourselves a player. Chappy, minus the personality...

But I will back SOS to make the call and it will be out of Venables or McLuggage.

I wouldn't expect Battle to slide to 23 on draft day and quality is quality. Notwithstanding last year's draftees, we're gonna delist or trade Everitt/Casboult/Jones/Walker/Jaksch/Foster/Gorringe in the next 18 months.

Yes we desperately need midfielders but lets not overlook talent, particularly those capable of improving our scoresheet. I'd expect us to take 5 midfielders, a KPP and a project ruck.

What makes you think Ainsworth is a solid citizen?
His petulant act leading to TAC suspension?
Check the training observations of his time training wth Melbourne.
Suggests FIGJAM......usually frowned upon on this board.

Charlie Curnow was pulled over for drink driving, we still drafted him.

Not everyone we pick should have a dull personality and shit haircut like Jacob Weitering.

If this lad is being likened to Chapman and the Dominator then he'd be hard to go past at our pick 5.
These blokes can tend to be big occasion players ... players that win you big finals ...

I am still waiting on suggestions with regards to the players you would have preferred.

McGrath was certainly on the radar as well, just for the speed and line breaking ability.

I am honestly projecting Ainsworth having the ability to play midfield.

After watching hawthorn v Carlton l felt like we didn't have the running power to go with them. Especially in the first quarter they just opened us up at will with quality ball use and speed. It wasn't just the speed but what also looked like very good endurance allowing for repeat sprints. Isaac smith stood out at times.

This made me think about the draft and our needs. In particular McGrath and Ainsworth. Suddenly McGrath seemed very appealing because of his running power. Something Ainsworth hasn't developed yet. McGrath seemed like he was always on the move looking to create with run. We could really do with more run and skill.

I also watched the game and one thing that stood out was our inability to kick goals when the ball was in the forward line. Ainsworth would certainly help our goal scoring ability and provide a target up forward.

I'm not convinced we will pick ainsworth. I dont buy too much into this height crap...but...it is hard to imagine a 5'8 fwd pocket that currently cant play consistent midfield mins woulb be the right pick.

Unless he projects as a 20 poss, 60 goal small fwd ( elite numbers), I dont want a part of it.

Would like to see some of mcgrath but I can see venables as having danger qualities.

Cyril, Betts, Walters, Chapman... Yeah I would hate to have those styled players in your team.

It all comes down to the beep test. If Ainsworth tests poorly, cross him off the list. But if he scores a 14+ at draft combine, do consider.

We've heard it all before with Menzel and some of our indigenous kids. The common theme is deluxe skills and good pace but very poor fitness, something they never quite worked their arses off to improve in multiple preseasons.

Work ethic and endurance are key - I saw Josh Schoenfeld debut on the telly last week. 19 touches on his first attempt and while he's no A-grader in terms of innate ability, a super athlete.

In keeping with the Khan theme:

Those are great players but not the type player we should be aiming for at pick 4.

The players should be the calibre of Bartel, Selwood, Danger, hodge, mitchell, judd, pavlich etc.

We need players that can lead you to wins. Remember when we drafted the icing before the cake last time?

I personally think cyril is one of the most overrated players in the comp. IMO betts has been way better and never received the same accolades.

Ultimately if one player proves to be a bit better than the other that's the one l would like. Whether it be Ainsworth McGrath venables, lm not fussed. All 3 will be very good if they reach there potential. I thought Ainsworth was brilliant at last years champs.

But l think we have been bitten before a number of times by the lack of endurance and work rate. We struggled to get Yarran and Menzel up to scratch. Dvr is struggling. Jaksch has work rate issues.

I do think Ainsworth and venables have higher ceilings. But do you take the guy(McGrath) that has proven himself to have excellent endurance , work rate plus leadership. Pick 5 will be real test for the recruiters.

Watching hawthorn altered my ideas. I've been very keen on support for Cripps. But we were shown up at times by a lack of run and being unable to retain possession because of it. Maybe we just have too many holes to fill.

I disagree respectfully up until the last 2 years betts has got the majority of his goals against bottom 8 sides . Go check his record in his career against hawthorn and other quality sides . Yes cyril doesnt get as much of the ball as some but he has way more impact than just about anybody on the scoreboard in score assists . Big game player who wins norm smith medals and i believe actually doesnt get the accolades he should . Its amazing how opinions differ hey :D
