Wowee... just had a look at a couple mock drafts, they got picks for days.

Maybe they sent him back to the SANFL for another years seasoning?

I think that he would be a good get for some team as a rookie. Give him another 2 seasons playing in the state league with occasional stints in the seniors as a learning curve.

It will be interesting to see what his philosophy is with building a list now he's at Carlton. Will he continue to stock up on talls.carlton only has one proven key position player for the future - weitering. A lot is riding on McKay developing. Has the landscape regarding forward lines changed with hawthorns success without a key forward. Maybe it's now more about quality options with size being less important.

I must admit lm a bit impatient and want a midfielder because we know they can he an impact early on. But l can see the certainty that taking Marshall would give us for our future forward line. There are a lot of variables at the moment with Tomlinson, Stewart, Marchbank available.

I will be interested in our first pick just to get an idea of how sos wants to build our list. It would be a big call to go tall as it would hold back our improvement for hopefully bigger gains later on.

Reports say that Marshall's biggest downfall is his kicking for goal.
Let's hope that if we do take him, we have at least offloaded Casboult first!

I wouldn't mind having Marshall for his size but I just want someone that doesn't make my stomach churn when I see them take a mark 30m out from goal.
The other thing to consider about Marshall is that whilst at GWS, Silvagni always took Victorian kids to maximise the trade return (more clubs in the market).
I would be very surprised if he took a gamble on a NSW kid. Not saying that it would never happen, but he would be more likely to go for a Victorian if he thought it was a lineball decision.

Eventually we can't overlook talent; SOS and Bolts are just trying to build a base through which they can coax any player in the competition to join up.

Would a kid from Broome pass up a chance at the Hawks right now?

Is he that far off pick #5-8 range? Twomey thinks Marshall would've gone after Schache but before Harry if he was in last year's pool.

I'd be against it because we already have drafted McKay and I don't see how we can make it work with both of them in the side. But I can see why some would want him as a just in case Harry doesn't make it at AFL level contingency.

Marshall is from Deniliquin. Closer to Melbourne than it is to Sydney.

From what ive read and seen of him I just dont rate him. I think he's getting pushed up the boards because he's the only tall in the draft basically.

We need mids and mids only inside the first 20 picks.

Assuming Brodie and McCluggage go as early as expected, which mids are you after with pick#5 and #23?

That-s why i'm not too keen on Pick #5 because I really dont like any at #5. If we kept #5 i'd have to make peace with hopefully getting Petrevski-Seton or failing that, Ainsworth.

But i'd much rather us trade #5 for two later picks, or a player and a pick.

At #23 i think someone like Clarke, Powell-Pepper, Scharenberg, Graham or a couple of others of those inside types would be nice.

If we traded #5 for say Geelong and GWS's firsts from the Giants, we could look at maybe two of Venables, Scrimshaw, Galluci, Drew or McGrath

I'm not against if he's the best talent available for our system, just means we need to off-load some lesser names.

I'd also be presuming we'd be trading into the top 30-40 some more, or we'd have secured some midfielders elsewhere.

Agreed. I'd be very disappointed if we went to the draft with only #5 as our first round pick.
Touhy, and more recently, Gibbs have been thrown up as first round pick options.
#5 downtraded for 2 later picks, Gibbs out, Touhy out, then all of a sudden we have a real possibility of having 4 first round picks.
If we trade one of them for O'Meara or Prestia then we still have 3 picks plus an elite young player that has been in the system for a while.
We could also use one of those picks to get Marchbank/Stewart/Steele/Hoskin-Elliot as a quartet.
That would give us 5 AFL experienced, quality young players, plus 2 first round picks.
We might have to wheel and deal later picks in this type of scenario but the basis of what I am suggesting is not out of the question.
We don't need the biggest fish in the pond, we just have to think like we did last year.
 
I think it is a very underwhelming draft from what I've seen and heard.

Definitely in agreement that trading our pick down to get more would be a good idea.

Apart from the trading of Gibbs i'm all for it would love to get a whole bunch of kids to the club.

I think Jaeger/Mitchell, The GWS 3/4 and a pick or two in the #10-16 range are very possible with Touhy, Casboult, Everitt, our first, our second and next years second all on the table

I was disappointed how little he showed at the club despite being a likely type who should have initially been drafted . Blaine Johnson went past him.

Is this Luke Reynolds we're talking about?
A very limited footballer that didn't have a right leg and was as nimble as a lumbering ruckman.
 
Listening to twomeys podcast a head recruiter mentioned that they're was a top tier of about 8-10 players.

Twomeys August guide has;
1.Mcluggage
2.Brodie
3.Ainsworth
4.Seton
5.Bowes
6.McGrath
7.English
8.Marshall
9.Setterfield
10.Scrimshaw
11.Perryman
12.Venables

Those top 12 seem to be very popular names for the top 10. People have mentioned trading for 2 lesser picks from our first. You would have to be careful trading outside this list. 3 are academy so you would definitely want a top 10 pick. Even then l don't think Carlton would want to be left choosing English with a pick near 10.

If you want a midfielder l would want one of those top 6 names. Some like venables but he seems risky to me. Would want to watch all his tac cup games to be sure about him.

I'm not sure it's feasible to use our first to trade for later first founders unless your happy with they're being a good chance your left with maybe one of Marshall English scrimshaw venables. Even then you wouldn't know which one is left.

I think pick 5 isn't a bad pick to have.
