Our zone would have the most non English speaking backgrounds. Over half of muslims in Victoria would be in our zone. Also have the most aboriginals in the zone compared to others (Melbourne area). If we can develop these kids from a young age we could be sitting on a gold mine. Overall % wise I think we would have the most players to pick from. Developing them and getting them to play aussie rules is another thing. Soccer in Australia (especially Victoria) is very multi-cultural (most clubs have ethnic backgrounds) and hard to convince kids to play afl then soccer. The parents would prefer them to stick to their own.

Why the AFL has set up the zones to begin with. A direct challenge to Soccer. Now AFL clubs will be doing the AFLs dirty work in their academy zones, spreading the word and giving kids a direct access pathway into the AFL. If we get a few role models through, more will follow on.

Broady too far west? It's about NNNW last time I looked....

The zone cut off must be Pascoe vale road, right of the road driving north is Northern zone Territory?

If we can do it, we should be trading hard into next years draft, not loading up on picks for this year.
You cant bank on next years draft being a super draft, they say that every year.
Players shoot up and down in the rankings in the last couple of weeks of the season, let alone over the course of a whole extra year.
Focus on the draft in front of you.

We should be looking to get as many picks inside the top 25 as possible over the 2-3 drafts.
Add them to our 2015 draftees and try and have 10-12 young guns under 21 by 2018.

You're gauging eliteness at AFL level based on performances as a junior, or off a single game or two where they showed glimpses in the seniors?

Elite is elite. Simply being a 1st round draft pick isnt enough. Simpson is elite because he's proven to be regardless of where he was drafted.

We have a decent bunch of 1st rounders from last year. Hopefully some of them will become elite (or at the very least, 200 game A graders). We dont know yet. And even (best case scenario) if they all turn out to be bona fide AFL players, we're still miles in the red in terms of talent due to 10 years of blown/ wasted drafts.

Deserves another year I agree. But dropping his name in a list of 'young talent' at the club, is indicative of just how much work we have to do.
Ditto another year on Sumner,as we know high no.10 draft pick and has genuine pace and strength to tackle and chase which we have seen, kicks ok..good leap we have seen, mark good...its all there relative to what we have pre existing in place, obviously he will need to see more ball forward and connection.more hope for him than KJ ..a solid move getting him to Carlton,i think he may improve and go ahead of Lamb with coming preseason which this time he can be a part of ...a nice option to keep an eye on.

Gibbs will be 28 by the time next season starts. We are at least 3 years away from challenging for a top 4 position. He'll be 31 by then. Is he going to be more beneficial to us than a 21 year old Venables/McGrath/Marshall? If the answer is no, then he needs to be shopped around for a pick that will get us one of those guys. Offer him up to Port for their first rounder.
Not this old chestnut again. Gibbs comes from SA so therefore it must mean he is seeking to move back to SA, hence him signing a long term contract to play with Carlton.

Gibbs is not moving back to SA & just in case it hasn't sunk in from when this has been stated previously, Gibbs is contracted & therefore cannot be shopped around against his will.

A Gibbs trade to SA is as likely as a Cripps trade to WA (Freo will have pick 3 this year, maybe they could package this with a decent player in a trade for Cripps).

Plowman is a gem and potentially could hold down full back for the next 10 years for the club. We all knew if he stayed healthy we'd have a very good player and he was looked at as the real value of the trade.
Sumner has been just as impressive. When watching him play it's easy to see why he was drafted so high.
He has some real pace, is very clean with his ball handling, kicking skills are good and seems to be a natural footballer.
What's really impressed me is the defensive pressure he puts on, he really cracks in with the forward pressure.
Think he would be a really dangerous player if we had a better functioning forward line.
Bolton clearly rates him very highly and if he can stay healthy it will be a massive win for SOS.

KJ has been disappointing for us since trading from GWS {rogers deal}...he has been consistently ok at VFL this year but is just a B grader player who is happy in the VFL ,have i got it wrong and he will develope late as a tall and live up to his draft ranking....this pre season will he bulk up a bit more and really start charging at the ball?...potentially he could be another Henderson for us .....has he not been training enough or under coached or is he just not dedicated and or doesnt really want to play for us?...i can see him an A grader a few people agree but how and when...i fear he would be snapped up cheap and developed if we dump him next year....solutions?

Yeah the club will sack a legend while he's still under contract but it's sacrosanct to trade a guy under contract. You keep believing that...

True, but that would depend on were you think the draft pick in question was roughly going to fall. I'd prefer pick 8 in next years draft to pick 15 this year.

I understand that and agree in principle. But in these circumstances i dont think it applies for two reasons;
1. I believe we seriously need to tighten our age profile up.

We need as much elite talent in between the ages of 17 (this years draftees) and 23 (Docherty).

Sustained success is built on having a lot of players peak at the same time, so we need to be looking towarda tightenning our age profile rather than spreading it.

2. We need to cut the duds and replace them with kids. We cant hold another year of Tutt, Whiley and Everitt etc on the list. We need to cut them and replace them with kids rather than let our list rot for another year.

Also, we can always trade 2018 picks for more picks in 2017

You're missing the point. Gibbs will not be traded. Move on from this idea.

I understand that supporters are looking at ways to get more early draft picks, similar to last year, but unlike last year when Hendo & Yarran definitely wanted out, suggesting trades that just won't happen is a pointless exercise.

The reality is SOS is going to have to be a little bit more creative during the trade period this year. Potentially Everitt & Casboult may end up on the trade table, but we are not going to have players with the currency of Hendo & Yarran on offer this year.

Well there was that rumour that Gibbs wanted to go back to SA so we can't say for certain he doesn't want to leave.

If we get a top 10 pick on offer for him and SOS + BB thinks that will benefit the club then I'd be quite surprised if they don't have a word to him and tell him.

It depends on what we'd need for Ben. I also wouldn't be saying no to picks from next year if they were clearly the best offer available. Besides, I haven't yet checked the drafting profile of the top clubs and just how spread out their most successful draft years (in terms of players who have played together in a premiership) have been. We wouldn't want to over-bake an otherwise sound theory just because of impatience.

I just realised Tuohy is 27 this Dec. That sort of changes my view on him, in so far as whether to keep or trade.
I'd trade him if the return was good enough.

I don't want to lose experienced, quality, hardened mids/flankers because I don't think we have many, and we risk becoming a rabble if we lose the ones we have, but, 27 is a bit long in the tooth.

There's a time to buy and sell.

But, I don't think Carlton will trade Zac. Though I could well be wrong.
Only mitigating factor is longevity and durability.

Touhy has not been on the sidelines for any amount of time, and he doesn't rely on any single athletic aspect of his game to play (speed, strength, agility etc, that all decline due to age or injury). He could, best case scenario, still play another six-eight years, so it depends on how high you see his ceiling - if he's shown it yet - and whether or not you back yourself to keep him on the ground that long.

I'm for trading him, but only if the price is right (a pick between 12-19).

Yeah, good luck with that. I don't foresee any club offering a pick in the top 20.

(Although Joey's Anderson brother to North )
It depends entirely on their position and their needs.

Last year, Richmond wanted to trade for Yarran, but only for a second round selection. They could, and they did, make their case as to why; he checked out, he was coming off a career worst year, he wanted only Richmond. We, rightly, suggested to them what we would entertain as a trade; a first round pick. They didn't want to trade 14; we were unwilling to part with Yarran for less than a first round pick.

I made the argument that Touhy was worth a first round pick a few weeks back, so I won't reiterate it here (plus it's the Draft thread, not List Management). If he is sought, by a club who thinks he's valuable, then we should not be willing to let him go for less than he's worth. At pick 10, a player only has an average of 65 games, and only 1 All Australian selection; (http://www.theroar.com.au/2016/06/08/not-all-afl-picks-are-created-equal/) Touhy has played 118 games, and would be within the top ten in his position.

He's worth the first round pick.

I was jumping for joy when we drafted him, now it seems as though it was a failed trade. He hasnt had any serious injury issues that would stop him from bulking up, after 4 years in the AFL system how much longer does his body need? I would say he is on thin ice, hasnt been able to break into the best 22 in two seasons, and doesnt look like doing so either. Will most likely be on next years list, after that? wouldnt be surprised or upset if he wasnt.

Season #1 he looked the goods in the pre-season as a defender but injured his ribs in round 1 and then had glandular fever IIRC.
Think he had some injuries last season but came back for the latter part of the season as a forward.
Has obviously not enthused the coaching staff with his application to contest this season, which sounds as though is high on the agenda of their areas of concern with KJ, though 1 game at AFL level probably not enough of a test case.
