According to knightmare, next year's draft is looking like the perfect draft for forwards. Maybe this year we just take mids, and get the big forward we need next year? That would mean we would have 1 year of drafting talls and another of drafting mids. Would give us a good indication of what we would actually need at the end of 2017.

We should just take mids regardless, but yes I have a lot of faith in last years crop, throw in some talented mids from this year to support them and then look to diversify from next year onwards. If we have multiple picks next year we should look to take mixtures of mids and forwards, but this year, we need mids and mids only (inside the first round)

Plowman is a gem and potentially could hold down full back for the next 10 years for the club. We all knew if he stayed healthy we'd have a very good player and he was looked at as the real value of the trade.
Sumner has been just as impressive. When watching him play it's easy to see why he was drafted so high.
He has some real pace, is very clean with his ball handling, kicking skills are good and seems to be a natural footballer.
What's really impressed me is the defensive pressure he puts on, he really cracks in with the forward pressure.
Think he would be a really dangerous player if we had a better functioning forward line.
Bolton clearly rates him very highly and if he can stay healthy it will be a massive win for SOS.

Plowman is a good player but he's undersized to be a true no.1 key defender

You're missing the point. Gibbs will not be traded. Move on from this idea.

I understand that supporters are looking at ways to get more early draft picks, similar to last year, but unlike last year when Hendo & Yarran definitely wanted out, suggesting trades that just won't happen is a pointless exercise.

The reality is SOS is going to have to be a little bit more creative during the trade period this year. Potentially Everitt & Casboult may end up on the trade table, but we are not going to have players with the currency of Hendo & Yarran on offer this year.

This guy gets it

See what happens with Jake Barrett from GWS as well... seems a likely sort as a mid... but GWS can't find the space to play him and he might be interested in moving out this year.

If we can manage to swing Steele and Barrett along with Marchbank and Tomlinson and keep out first round pick and maybe trade later picks for a first rounder... or Sydney stumps up their first for Tuohy and the doggies third.

That would give us 2 talls and potentially as many as 5 young mids.

OR... we could stick with our single first round pick and try and trade for some first and second round picks next year. And do the GWS trade as well...

I will be the first to admit I know nothing about Barret so i can't comment. With zero knowledge should I be concerned he's another Whiley type?
As for the others. I'm positive Tomlinson, Marchbank, Steele and a couple of this years first round picks, say #4 and #16 would slot into out 15-25 player range. Straight away making us a younger, more competitive team imo

Barrett goes pretty well, much much better disposal than Whiley

Contracted for next year, so time to reset again over the pre-season. Unless we wrap it up early for a draft pick (STK if they miss out on Marchbank).
Yep another preseason and then it might be over for KJ ?,but he has the ability .he had the foot stress reaction first preseason so missed most of that and came back this year after preseason and had cracked ribs and then glandular fever...so he has had some injuries.I just hope we are not missing something and let this one slip away....really draft picks are hard earnt [i consider KJ a draft] and considering the price and dilemmas of trades atm we should really pay attention to our existing talent......some clubs seem to really get the best out of theirs.......

So was Whileys' in the NEAFL before we got him... and it's good in the VFL as well. It's just when he's in the senior squad it goes to shit.

Just did a check, it appears that Barrett is 182cm tall, 82kg and at his draft testing.

Had one appearance as a sub and did well. And seems to be a bit of a contested beast.

Dunno if Whileys disposal was ever great, it isn't at VFL, but he gets a ton of it. Barrett gets a ton it and uses it quiet well. I'd say He's a down grade on Coniglio but probably build and play wise he'd be the best comparison? Runs all day both ways as well.

Sounds like a type of player we could use at the club.

There was a list of the current draft picks for each club on the Heraldsun site yesterday.
Both Brisbane and Gold coast have a huge amount of early/second round picks and both are interested in players from Carlton, ie Everitt and Casboult.
Gold Coast will add even more picks to their tally through JOM and Prestia, so we would be crazy not to do deals with them to improve our position and get picks to on-trade to GWS for any GWS players that we want.
I just hope that any GWS guys we pick up this year will have an immediate impact next year.

This is starting to get into the list management area... We should take the discussion of Barrett, Steele et al to the list management thread... or Aphrodite will growl at us :)
