Just have a feeling that SPS may not be in our sights, if we're after an inside-outside mid here @ #5
The two players I can't see us getting a glimpse of at #5 are McCluggage & McGrath, with anything after that a possibility.

This will probably look silly as soon as next week but for now and assuming no picks get traded:

Essendon: McCluggage - Maybe the biggest upside of all the players at the top end of the draft. Too hard to pass on.
Brisbane: McGrath - Just makes sense for what they need........and lets's assume that they're evil enough to bid on Bowes
Fremantle: English/SPS? - Will they go home-grown and if the miss on Hill does SPS become somewhat more appealing? Who knows.
G. Coast: Bowes - They love to get him later but won't dare pass on him here.

Carlton:
Brodie - Can't see us not being keen. Just the upside may be a question.
Ainsworth - Not sure why bit I don't see him in Carlton colours.
Taranto - Only if we believe he can play midfield.
Venables - Interesting one based on what we think we could make him become. Has the tools.
Scrimshaw - Interesting again and the potential upside may be the reason we reach for him....if we do.
Marshall - Can't see it but?????

Not the worst of choices here. Anyone else that may jump the queue here?

Really like Taranto. Big tank, strong endurance, quick. Excellent offensive and defensive run. Really strong mark of the ball. Can play forward, wing or midfield. Really good at finding the footy. If we are gonna reach I reckon we reach for Taranto.

English?

Do you really want to pick up a young ruckman with an early pick who recently got smashed by a WAFL ruckman?

He's skinny and weak. That can be fixed sometimes but some people are incapable of putting on weight, some lose their mobility and pace, and others break down with endless injuries. There's too many unknowns with ruckman and they take too long to develop. That's why nobody takes ruckman in the first round anymore.

Plus he is already 19. He has had an extra year to put on weight but is still extremely skinny. His highlights packages show him getting into space and using it quite well but they don't show him actually taking contested marks. Will be another Josh Fraser. A ruckman who plays small and doesn't exceed at his primary role.

Won't be another Peter Wright. Wright was never skinny for an U18 and was a forward who in the absence of other ruck options, was made to spend too many minutes in the ruck reducing his impact as a forward.
He runs all day, he's going to be skinnier by default.

I think he projects as a CHF who can take ruck minutes, and won't get taken out of the game easily by zone structures because of his extremely unique combination of height, athleticism and skill.

If you want to fold your arms and call him a ruck, I totally understand why you'd knock him down.

He's averaging something close to 20 possessions at all levels in the WAFL, and finished the season in the reserves. Goddard is the better pure ruck, but English is some player.

If i'm recruiting a potential CHF I would want them to kick more than 6 goals in 16 games across all levels in WA. He also averages 16 possessions a game and had only 10 in his 1 WAFL game, so it is not quite the output you are suggesting.

I'm definitely projecting, but he's that rare project player where the only question mark seems to be is "does he have the smarts to make the position change?"

I think the answer is yes.

Why would they bid on him at 4? They could take whomever they want at 4 and pay for him with later picks.
Harks was saying he'll be bid on before GC's pick and they'll have to use pick 4 on him.

From the little I've seen of Bowes, he projects as one of the best of this bunch. He's inside/outside and a perfect size for modern footy. If he was Victorian, I reckon he'd be as hyped as McLuggage. Essendon should bid on him at no.1 imo.

You do wonder for the integrity of this bidding system.
If for instance Gold Coast sounded Brisbane out as to their intent....they could help them out so that they don't make that bid.
Conversely, what would it take for Brisbane to go to GC and say, "We're going to bid for Bowes" What are you going to give us not to do so?

It makes a big difference to GC for other clubs not to bid on Bowes whereby they could possibly select Bowes after taking another top 3 talent.

unfortunately I think there is almost zero chance Bowes will be bid on before our pick. I really think GC with all their picks will make a very generous offer to either Essendon or Brisbane (hopefully Brisbane as Essendon showed last year they won't bid on players and especially won't do so with number 1 pick) to take the chance out of it.

Zero chance? I think there's a very good chance either Brisbane or Freo will bid. He's probably the best player in the draft.

I just think if it comes to it, Gold Coast will make them a nice offer to swap pick 4 for pick 1 or 2. They won't want to chance it and they have a crapload of picks of which they won't need all.

Essendon won't bid on him. They're not going to give up the pick 1 title to the Gold Coast.

We'll have to rely on Brisbane or Freo to bid on him.
Assuming Freo still have pick 3 after the McCarthy and Hill trades, I believe they will draft English as a replacement for Sandilands.

Does anyone have any inclination about what Carltons preference might be outside the top 5.

The top 5 being Mcluggage , Brodie , Ainsworth, McGrath , SPS

With there being the option to trade pick 5 and 23 for pick 7 and Marchbank l wonder if Carlton has a player they like outside the top 5 that they would be comfortable with at pick 7.

It is a possibility that English and Marshall are taken early or Bowes is bid on in top 3 and one of the above top 5 slips to 7. It's a gamble though. Maybe sos will know a likely order.

All the players outside the top 5 seem to have a lot more risk attached.

Does anyone feel Carlton would be happy to downgrade 5 to 7 with the possibility of ending up with a Taranto , scrimshaw, venables etc

I was up on Taranto after the Vic Country game, but I worry a bit about pace for a top 10 selection. Having said that if he plays like he has been up a level then he will be worth it

I can't see Essedon bidding on Bowes as they know they won't get him so they won't give up their player the number 1 mantle.
If Hanley goes to GC they will cut a back room deal that makes Brisbane not bid. They could try help out Freo with the Hill or McCarthy trade with all their 2nd round picks in some sort of three club deal in return for a player and Freo not bidding. Or they could even upgrade 6 to 3.
If they can't get 3 they could then even offer 6 and one of their second rounders to us for 5 and could take Everitt if they wanted.

they really should be able to get two picks in before Bowes and be able to match with later picks

Will small fwd duo Sam Fowler and Dan Allsop be drafted or rookied this year and if so where????

I feel the same way. The preliminary and grand finals are a distraction. When our team is out of it, it is all about next year.

I would mark down every day - but I might get told to sod off! LOL
Even today, I have tuned in to SEN (yes I know, SEN) and all they are talking about is Collingwood recruiting a Dad;s Army!
Who cares? The more they do that the better as far as I am concerned.
