Does anyone have any inclination about what Carltons preference might be outside the top 5.

The top 5 being Mcluggage , Brodie , Ainsworth, McGrath , SPS

With there being the option to trade pick 5 and 23 for pick 7 and Marchbank l wonder if Carlton has a player they like outside the top 5 that they would be comfortable with at pick 7.

It is a possibility that English and Marshall are taken early or Bowes is bid on in top 3 and one of the above top 5 slips to 7. It's a gamble though. Maybe sos will know a likely order.

All the players outside the top 5 seem to have a lot more risk attached.

Does anyone feel Carlton would be happy to downgrade 5 to 7 with the possibility of ending up with a Taranto , scrimshaw, venables etc

I dont mind this at all. It would be nice if we could get a late first round pick as well. So trade 5 and 23 for 7 and marchbank and get pick 17 some how as well. Grab Scrimshaw at 7 and maybe battle or kerr at 17.

I was just reading the herald sun and it says that GWS are really keen on Mcgrath. So they are doing what ever they can to get up the draft. So hopefully SOS can work that in our favour and get extra for pick 5.

They bend rules or turn blind eyes whenever they want. More likely to do so when it involves basket case QLD teams.
I'm not sure if people are being too cynical or not cynical enough about the bidding process.

Firstly the AFL won't allow any official deal to allow Bowes to slide through. It would break the integrity of the system.

Secondly any unofficial deal would be relying on clubs to commit to a secret deal that's completely non-binding. What's to stop Brisbane taking overs for Hanley and then bidding anyway? Absolutely nothing.

....."the integrity of the system." Are we talking about the AFL here?

I'm certainly no expert on this years draft prospects, but the little I do know about Kerr suggests he would be a very nice fit for the Blues 2nd pick.

5th most marks of any player in the Under 18s carnival. Really good kick for goal. 194cm tall. Grandfather a legend of the club.

If it came down to Battle or Kerr I'd go for Kerr (even though Battle has a cooler name).

Also nice his grandfather is in our hall of fame. If only his father could have eeked out another lazy 51 games!

But I also really hope we're able to get him with a pick in our 20s, that's why I'm not big on trading that one.

Sounds like the BATTLE of DunKERRk

Just a speculative one, probably more the 2017 (or 2018?) draft.

But where is Ben Silvagni likely to be targeted? I've read he's the most natural and highest rated of the 3 brothers. Would it be likely we'd have to nominate a first round pick for him?

If he's that high would it really be a good idea for us to start trading future picks?

Yeah it absolutely would be a good idea.

Every champion side is built around two or three drafts. You simply dont build a champion side by trying to hit one player every year. It doesnt work.

We should be doing EVERYTHING we can to make 2015 and 2016 our two champion drafts in my opinion.

And Ben in 2018 makes that even better. Our 2018 1st simply must be traded out for a 2018 2nd and a player or some other benefit in 2017.

No matter how good Ben is, even if hes bid on top 3, we'll be able to get him, even if it costs us out 2nd, another 2nd and our third. It doesnt matter if in 2018 we only take Ben (possible top 10 prospect) and two picks in the 40's. Because by then, hopefully we will have taken 4xTop 20 picks in 2015, hopefully similar numbers in this years draft and maybe 2xTop 20 picks in 2017. Then add ben. That's 9-11 top 20 picks in four years. Add Cripps, Docherty, Marchbank, Plowman, Sumner, etc to that list, Tom Mitchell maybe... that's a champion team.

Interesting write up on a potential Carlton recruit:

http://footyprophet.com/2016-afl-draft-profile-patrick-kerr/

"The 2016 draft is lacking key position talent at the top end, which makes Patrick Kerr a very interesting prospect. "

This is why I don't think we'll draft him.
It's hard enough making it as a top end KPF talent, let alone one that's largely being talked about because there's no-one better.
That may be harsh on Kerr, but I just don't see him as having enough tricks to make it.

Only watched Kerr for 10 minutes in champs but he looked one dimensional. Lead, mark, kick player who might be shut down easily at AFL level. Looked like he lacked agility and involvement in general play in order to provide assists.

Would have to see more but based on the small amount l've seen would not be interested.

For us a forward that was an accurate kick would be a dimension from the Twilght Zone.

:D

I reckon he's a chance to make it, but his work rate has to improve. Wouldn't spend a top 30 pick on him, however.

I like our chances for 192-194 cm types in the 30-50 range; seems to be some tall mids who look likely to fill out and be dangerous closer to goals (at either end).

All Kerr has to do is tell 15 other clubs he has no desire to play for them and will be moving at end of original contract.

The amount of players actually doing it nowadays isn't just a statistical anomaly, it's certainly happening a lot more than when McKay and Pyman threatened all those years ago

I'm sure the Kerr family will fund a couple of Auskick programs somewhere in the remote regions of Australia ;)

And the AFL will turn a blind eye - just like they did when Essendon hid James Hird in his pre draft years

Jason Dunstall says hello.

;)

When l wrote the post about Kerr being one dimensional l was thinking of the 80's.

In this draft two players who make for a good comparison are Marshall and Kerr.

Marshall is the modern day KF. Good over head, agile, quick and a danger whether the ball is in the air on the ground. Good defensive pressure as well l believe.

Kerr looks like the 80's FF. Lead mark kick player who would like an open forward 50 to lead into from the goal square.

Kerr will need to be a very good contested mark to make the grade because l do wonder what's going to happen when the ball hits the ground.

Players like Kerr usually need to go first round to make the grade otherwise the odds are against them.

Will be interesting to see how he develops.
