Tell me about it. I would be rapt if we could pull of a parish/francis combo this year, we need it.

I'd be absolutely gobsmacked.

Picks from say 10 to 30, is where recruiters will be judged in years to come, very even in terms of players.

Clarke is a inside beast and while people rate Brodie in the top 5, Clarke is better bang for your buck with a later pick

If Clarke is picked as high as 11, i will be gobsmacked.

Doesn't mean it can't happen of course.

Taranto had a good ending to the TAC Cup and all, but was considered to be closer to #20 only a few months ago. Good player but not sure on what basis people are salivating like he is a must have.

Not sure on what basis you would have many players infront of him at the moment.
McCluggage, Brodie, Ainsworth, McGrath... Tumbleweed...
I would say that Taranto has had an under 18's championship and back of TAC Cup season to equal most of these guys if not better.

It's not as though this is beyond question. Even the latest revised Phantoms don't have him that high. I'm not doubting his ability. I liked him during the nationals and was hoping he would last to the second round at the time.

How is his workrate? His defensive running? Will he be more of a forward than a midfielder?

ODN, i reckon Taranto could go as high as 3 and only as low as about 8.

Really, in every game against the best this year he has starred.

The main Champs games, TAC finals and the semi friendly All-stars match where he dobbed 4 without breaking a sweat.

His output against the best has been brilliant. He is terrific athletically, great size, inside/outside, big tank, marks strongly above his head, hits the scoreboard hard, versatile, and really good character. He apparently interviewed a treat at the Combine.

Dunno what's not to like with that resume.

Edit: spelling

Possibly. Just saying that the phantom drafters haven't gone that way yet. The question I raise are ones they raise as well.

I have seen him hit the scoreboard. Knows where the goals are. Not necessarily a burst player, more a player that finds space and finds the ball from what I saw. Thought he was pretty good during the championships but certainly not a standout. Only read about the TAC finals and the All Star games so take it at face value he was a standout there.

I'd rather get sold on a player than be swayed by the flavour of the month. Is he this year's Clayton Oliver who came from outside the top 10 to be an early pick?

Oliver was a way bigger bolter.

Didn't even get a guernsey in the Championships.

Really, Taranto isn't a bolter, but has risen with each performance on the big stage. As i answered you a bit earlier, apparently with the recruiters(or at least some) he has always been up there. Just getting a bit more "up there" as the season went on.

I know i'm probably sounding like i think he's the bee's knees, and i do in a way, but i'm just trying to answer the query with my opinion.

IMO, McCluggage is a very clear No1 and then i'd be happy with any of about 6 or 7 players after that if i had Pick 2 to Pick 8.

What revised phantoms are you looking at? KMs latest for example has him at 4

If we aren't in the position for Brodie anymore we'd probably be better off shipping off #5 to GWS for maximum return and just using the picks we receive in return for Gibbs and Tuohy.

Could still enter the draft with 3 picks in the top 25.
#5 will be a very good pick. #15 and #16 are OK but not the same quality. Really hope we hold #5 as we need quality.

Edit:

Just had a look at Twomeys rankings. Would we give up one of Brodie or Taranto for two of Venables, Florent, Gallucci, SPP? Will be interesting to see how SOS rates them and what the end game is.

SOS has been very consistent in his messaging since joining the club - we need to improve the depth of talent on the list.

If he believes - and I suspect he may - that the best way to do that is by jettisoning 5 for 15 and 16, then it's a very sensible move to do so.

Sure pick 5 is a very good pick and may well produce a terrific footballer...but if 15 and 16 enable us to bring in two (or more) very good young players, then it seems like an absolute no brainer.

Agreed, J.

Minor point, but I'm not sure pick 5 would get us picks 15 & 16. And definitely not with Marchbank in there too.

So it may be 5 & 25 (and something else?) for 15 & 16 & Marchbank.

Didn't mean to turn it into a trade post, but just wanted to point out the 'draft balance' is probably even more complicated than 5 vs 15 & 16...

15 + 16 = 2179 points
5 = 1878 points

Difference of 301 points - if Marchbank is involved that values him at pick 49 which is obviously too low.

If we're looking at a simple pick swap then we'd even it up with our 3rd pick (currently 362 points).
