Brodie looks and plays like David Mundy

This is exactly the comparison I was thinking.

Some other comparisons I think work:

Ainsworth = Zorko
Petrovski-Seton = Rioli
Bowes = Dal Santo
McLuggage = Akermanis
McGrath = Wanganeen
Scrimshaw = Birchall

Note the good deal they gave the Tigers for Deledio.

We're back on market rates or plus now. We'll still likely get some nominations for a short while from some players from the SOS era but made to pay for them (though they gave away a heap for small change to others that should/could have been bundled up).

I really like the look of Scrimshaw, I just have a few concerns about his ability to be a midfielder. We don't need any more intercepting half backs.

Brodie would be a great fit for us I feel, has pretty good pace for his size too.
Scrimshaw doesn't see himself as a half-back at the next level, and he starred when put into the midfield, it was just a jam packed midfield at Sandringham and he and McGrath (and Florent) had to play roles on the flanks at times.

It'll also be great to have a mid of his physical attributes that is already aware of how to drop into a zone.

Scrimshaw = Birchall
That's already been knocked on the head since people started making the comparison. Much more Bont than Birchall.

Taranto = Bartel
Slower version though (and boy, Jimmy could leap too).

Bit of a flaw in this method Jimbo - I've never heard anyone else really question his pace.

WEAKNESSES
While I wouldn’t describe Taranto as a slow mover, he isn’t the most explosive footballer off the mark. He gets away with it at junior level due to his smarts and ability to find space in congestion, but won’t have that time next year. It will be interesting to see his speed testing at the National Draft Combine, as it could be an area of development that could provide scope.

The areas Taranto will want to work on will be his two way running and work rate, which will come under pressure at AFL level.

Pretty obvious favouring I would have thought.

I'm not so sure.

I think GWS have done here what the best recruiting teams in recent years have done - identified a player who they think can help them win a flag, and paid a over market value to make sure they got him.

It's exactly what Adelaide should have been thinking when they tried to trade for Gibbs.

3sec flat 20m sprint at TAC testing early in the year.
That doesn't mean much without more context, as the combine is after some of these kids have played 30-35 games for the year.

And, these testing results are about informing us of things we've seen, as well as things we've missed. Taranto's not been missed.

I've read that Ainsworths best comparison is Jamie Elliott, given his terrific leap and very strong hands above his head.

Zorko isn't anything to think about aerially.

Ed Curnow, Bryce Gibbs and Marc Murphy would be rightfully upset at Palmer being called the 2nd best contested mid behind Crippa
Touche Flowers, but here is a big difference between a genuine inside mid & a contested mid. SPS can claim to be a contested mid, but he isn't in the same galaxy as Brodie or SPP as an inside mid.
  • Ed Curnow is tagger/run-with player so to claim him as an inside mid is a bigger stretch than selecting Boekhorst or Doedee with a 1st Rounder.
  • Marc Murphy's body can no longer cash the tickets we keep giving him and struggles to stick a tackle.
  • After 10 years Bryce Gibbs is yet to show he can put back-to-back quality seasons together and when push comes to shove would rather be somewhere else.
FWIW I still think Gibbs should've been traded. SOS probably could've got his 2 1st rounders (1 future) had he been prepared to throw a bone back the other way. Granted Reid isn't the smartest List Manager getting around, but sometimes the tail needs to wag the dog to obtain a desired outcome. Instead we chose to shut down dialogue just to prove a point. Those 2 future 1st Rounders (Geelong & Adelaide) could've been used as part of the O'Meara trade obtain Pick 10 and some later picks. Going into this ND with 5, 10 & 13 would've been huge. If we could've walked away with Brodie, Scrimshaw and SPP out of this draft I wonder how many people would've still bitched & moaned about parting with a player who doesn't really want to be here.

I don't think Graham will be gone come pick 48, so he's a chance there. I just don't see him being a mid at AFL level, but I reckon he might surprise as a rebounding defender.

That said, I wouldn't pick him in the ND if it were up to me.
Graham was awarded the Larke Medal as the best performed player in Division 1 at this years U18 Champs playing as an inside mid. He won that award ahead of McLuggage, McGrath, Brodie, SPS, Taranto, etc. Kid is no spud.

Tomorrow's heroes: Tim Taranto, big-game gun

A RECRUITER was recently quizzed about any late bolters in this year's NAB AFL Draft pool. A few names were mentioned, including Tim Taranto, who finished the season in brilliant form for the Sandringham Dragons.

"Taranto?" the recruiter said. "No, he's been near the top all the way along."

It's been stated by several media outlets and some Adelaide insiders (Riccutto for example) that we would have had to have given up our future 2nd round pick to make that happen.

They were being ridiculous.

He is too slow. Look at how many tackles he broke from being 5+ kgs heavier than his opponent. Won't happen at AFL level.

Slower version though (and boy, Jimmy could leap too).

Taranto isn't slow, I would say laconic in his movements. Pendlebury like, in more ways than one

This from a couple of years back, another reason he has huge upside

"Tim Taranto started playing basketball at 6 years old wanting to follow in his Dad's footsteps of becoming a great basketball player.

Along the way he has played domestic basketball for the Parkdale Pacers and representative basketball for the Sandringham Sabres accumulating a number of achievements as he goes. Most recently Tim represented Vic Metro at the East Coast Challenge in Sydney where he and his team came home champions.

This year Tim has successfully been selected in the U16 Men's Victoria Metro basketball team and will be travelling to Adelaide in July to represent Victoria at the National Basketball championships."

So do we know how strong this draft is?
What have the experts said about it?
I heard last week it was said several recruuters feel it is a very very strong and deep draft
Is this true?
