Key thing to consider before we nail anything down.

1. There at least 3 players who will likely see the Academy bidding process (Bowes at 3 from Brisbane, Setterfield and Perryman from GWS) It is possible that Essendon makes a bid for one of those with Pick 1 which would eliminate either picks 2 or 4 if matched. It also could happen twice (Essendon bid on Setterfield, Brisbane bids on Bowes) if that happens it really throws more options at us than we likely would have considered as we might get someone we thought was gone.

No its not.. With the #1 pick no club will want to show the card that they are getting there 2nd preference.. They will want to parade Mcclugage as the best player in the draft, which they wont be able to do if they big on an academy kid.

Quite surprised he has Brodie falling to us after he had Brodie listed at pick 3 up until yesterday. Will certainly take it. Brodie has gone from potentially number 1 to pick 5. He had Scrimshaw and Ainsworth much lower so has obviously had a change of opinion.

Really very happy we kept pick 5. Out of Brodie, Scrimshaw, Ainsworth and Taranto we should have someone talented who is going to contribute to our best 22.

This is his phantom, so based on who he thinks each will select based on needs, inside knowledge etc.. Previous post were about what order he rated them.

This doesn't make much sense, but I keep thinking of it when I think about SPS and clubs overlooking Rioli, allowing Hawks to swoop ..

"Fool me once, shame on you... Fool me twice, shame on yo... err--- me"

...
I only know the George W way now.
...

It looks like we'll have a chance to take this supremely talented player .. Bite the bullet. Our midfield looks horrendous on paper. Build for the future by bringing in the most talent...

While I'm at it ... What is with people saying Pickett will provide the speed and x-factor (ie immense skill) ... As though that aspect of the team is taken care of ...
Give me 22 players with speed and x-factor and I'll hand you a premiership cup.

Absurd to quantify the need for these qualities.

I've seen him play and he looks impressive to me, mind you I haven't seen him anywhere near what the recruiters have. I don't take any notice of Knightmare's draft as he may well do a lot of research but he doesn't have any knowledge of who clubs are interested in.

Cal Twomey and Emma Quayle on the other hand spend a lot of time with these guys and have a lot of contacts at the clubs who divulge information to them about who they think the other teams are looking at picking. Clubs that don't have high draft picks also divulge info to them about who they rate at the top end of the draft, at this stage this information seems to be indicating that Brodie is very much in the picture for us. Obviously things can change as clubs get better and better information as the draft approaches, but at the moment I would suggest he is looking a very good possibility for us.

I understand all of that.

Knightmare, I my humble opinion, posts his thoughts and considerations on who clubs will/could/should take, along with a list of power rankings that should be more useful when judging talent

Twomey & Quayle get great inside information, they are far from being experts on the talent of 18 year old kids.

Read countless opinions/expert facts on the value of Brodie, which in large I disagree with, but we are all entitled to an opinion. Given that I am probably the only person that thinks Brodie does not have the class to be considered as a top 10 pick, I understand people swaying with the masses

Happy to continue the banter

But using that system, you may be left taking someone you wouldn't want to, just because they're the best of a bad bunch. :)
I was genuinely interested as to who you would take at #5, regardless of which methods you use to get to your decision.

The guys I put up as having genuinely liked months ago were: McCluggage, Scrimshaw, Florent, McGrath, Brodie, Taranto.........and Worpel......until I realised that he was an under-ager.
I know Ainsworth should be there also but from what I saw, I could see him get blanketed by a good opponent.

Well if SOS picks Brodie at 5, happy to cope it from the experts here, if SOS lets Brodie slide, happy for people to think that I have no clue or insight on talent :)

I'm always an advocate for best available player in the draft. This year though, I think any player other than best midfielder available will have to be an absolute steal in draft position to be considered.

Mind you, after any draft, every one of our picks are an absolute steal at the position they were picked.

In that case, we are getting the 3rd best player according to his rankings. According his rankings there would be 3 academy selections before the 5th live pick, so we would go from the 8th most talented player to the 3rd... based on his rankings.

Happy if Brodie slides to us. Happy with pick 5 to be honest. Wont be disappointed with who falls to us. Itll be up to us to get the most out of them.

After seeing footage I'm a NO on Scrimshaw. I don't think we are in a position to take a risk on a tall skinny type.

It is Essendon, clear judgement is not a bankable quality with them.

I do fully expect McLuggage, Bowes and McGrath to be out of immediate reach but the rest is wide open so Brodie isn't a lock.

You're not going to play the game are you? :)
I'll try and make it easy for you and all in good spirit:
Which of these guys would you consider at #5, taking out Academy players, along with McCluggage, McGrath, Ainsworth....and that hack, Brodie:

1. Taranto
2. Scrimshaw
3. Logue
4. Florent
5. English
6. Petrevski-Seton
7. Venables
8. Sympkin
9. Clarke
10. Drew

Just a yes or no would be great........Thanks in advance.

That's an easy game,

"Yes"?

It's all good, things would get pretty boring if everybody has the same opinion.

After seeing footage I'm a NO on Scrimshaw. I don't think we are in a position to take a risk on a tall skinny type.

I can't see us taking a back-man with our first, given what we have acquired in the past couple of years.
I know Scrimshaw can likely play up the ground, but if there's any query on him being able to do so, would we keep stacking the back-line?
I think we now have the makings of a quality back six/eight and can continue to build from underneath but not from the premium end of the draft.
I also don't see any tall forwards in this draft that will/would be better than for what we're trying to build and it's very unlikely we'd reach for a ruckman with #5 or #25, for that matter.

So that then leaves us with mids (Taranto/Brodie etc) or clever smaller forwards (Ainsworth/Sympkin etc)
I can't see it any other way for our first two picks.

You are right. But it wasn't really the point I was making was it.

No, and I actually agree with your point wholeheartedly. I'm all for recruiting "footballers" over athletes... As a C.Rioli fan, just couldn't let that go! ;)

Will Brodie looks the goods, don't like Taranto's kicking style or disposal by foot. He holds the ball up high

Yeah, Brodie had an interesting game in the TAC Cup GF, I think he actually had one effective kick for the game, when he took a mark on the HBF and short passed backwards to Garthwaite in the back pocket, great kicking style

I have sacrificed a chook and spread its gizzards across my kitchen floor to read the future.

I see us selecting Taranto at 5 ahead of Brodie. SOS is concerned about Brodie's blazing away from stoppages and wants cleaner entries and goal scoring options.

If Powell-Pepper is available at 25 then Mr. Silvagni will be reading his name out. Hard bodied, hard running contested beast, ready to go. If he is unavailable, then welcome to Carlton Zac Fisher.

Would be silly if the best available player with our second pick was a backman. I'm not liking our chances of getting a standout 'pure' midfielder with our second round pick.

No. Brodie had 57% KE and 65% DE.

Taranto was 43% KE and 64% DE.
