I agree with this. It seems more players are content to stay at a club outside their home state only as long as it takes to establish that they can play, then they're looking to "go home". We've been beneficiaries of this (Doc for example) and victims (though Betts and Gibbs took a bit longer).
Having said there, there are plenty who do stay the course, but there's no guarantee. At 18 they're just rapt to get drafted. By 20, having played a season or so and become a tradable asset, they're already examining their options.

If drafting for long term future, try to draft Victorian players who are most likely to be in it for the whole journey and not get "homesick" on us.

Call it Funks EOH rule.

I'm not in anyone's camp - I'm just curious what has seen Brodie slide from a potential Nº1 to slipping past us?

At the end of the day, we need to nail pick 5 with the footballer most likely to play 250 games. We've had too many drafts (Yarran vs Ziebell, Lucas vs Talia) where we've overlooked a good old fashioned meat-and-potatoes footballer for someone more 'gifted'.
This really isn't like comparing Yarran to Ziebell or Sidebottom.

None of the players we're talking about have any issues with their background, physicality or consistency. They each have one knock, and it's related to their perceived AFL position, which is hardly a knock at all if they have the requisite skill and ability.

Yes a couple of surprises:

1. If ESS take Mcgrath, I believe GWS would look at Ainsworth
2. Suprised if C. Cox goes that early, but he does have a higher ceiling
3. Feel Bolton will be picked up before pick 40
3. If we were looking at a KPP at 25 I would rate B. Cox in front of Kerr (Would be great to have a crack at Kerr in the 3rd round) If it was a mid, Bolton, Drew, Fisher, would be great picks also.

The guys he has us taking from 3rd round onward, I would be very happy with, especially Lebois

just wondering on why cox over kerr who i doubt will be available at 25 due to possible cats interest? i reckon our list needs a young kpf and kerr seems to fit the bill.

I was going to add reasonable left boot for an inside mid, but I know many people view that as a weakness.
Think he is pretty good when he pushes up forward too, be happy with him @ our 2nd A0 ?

Absolutely, especially if we are looking at SPS with 5. Not only did he feature in the Beep/3KM tests, he was top 10 in the kicking test, not bad for a pure inside beast

I agree, I actually have PA taking him before the cats, but if he slides, I would use pick 25 on him

Cox has prominently played as a forward over his career, apart from 2016. As a forward he is as good as Kerr, if not better. Late in the season, when the SANFL under 18 season finished, he was selected for a reserves final, and kicked multiple goals. On pure talent, I actually rate Sproule ahead of Kerr too.

Having said all that, Kerr seems like an absolute professional. I doubt that anyone will question his work ethic and or commitment

My problem with Brodie's kicking is that he doesn't really spot up short-medium options often enough, and that he too often tries to kick without having broken clear into space, resulting in him getting his kicks needlessly smothered.

That doesn't bode well for his ability to execute at AFL level.

Yeah, if we passed on Brodie or Taranto and took one of SPS or Scrimshaw, Dylan Clarke would be the ideal player for our 2nd.
Also liked Ryan as a player, but think Dylan has way more potential.

Yeah I like Ryan too, had him in front of Cuningham last year, happy with cunners though

Thing is if we're taking Brodie, it's for his contested ball winning ability, he will regularly get good clearance and tackle numbers.
If we want a player who can hit up short to medium passes, SPS or Scrimshaw would be two of the best in this draft.
Kicking with Taranto is another story, he may have good finishing skills around goals, but if he is going to play as a half forward/mid at AFL level he needs to get much better at kicking inside 50, this is my biggest worry with Taranto.

Just doing a bit of delving and my thoughts for the day are if we take Brodie at 5, I'm looking at one of Venables, Fisher, Simpkin, Ronke, Berry at 25. If we go Taranto or SPS, I'd include Drew, Clarke, SPP or Scharenberg in the reckoning.

Take whoever slides from that bunch at #48 and Luke Bunker at #63.

I really dont understand the Brodie hate. Taranto's kicking is just as poor if not worse than Brodie's.

If you want skills youre taking SPS at 5.

In fact outside of McLuggage and SPS all the top 7 have pretty average around the ground disposal.

But surprise surprise. Disposal really means shit all. Fyfe is an average kick. Dangerfield is an average kick. Take the bloke who wins the ****ing pill and wins it well

Agreed.
However if we take Brodie at 5 and SPP is still there at 25, it'd very hard to pass on him. I certainly wouldn't.
Also Ronke at 25 would be a major reach. Would only consider him with one of our later picks.

No he wasn't (the result of the 3km only give the top 6 for some reason)
Kicking test (score out of a possible 30)
Jordan Ridley (27)
Isaac Summing (26)
Jarrod Berry (25)
Ben Long (25)
Sam Walker (25)
Josh Williams (25)
Ben Jarman (24)
Tom Williamson (24)
Dylan Clarke (24)
Kym LeBois (23)
Willem Drew (23)
Josh Battle (23)
Jake Waterman (23)

He wasn't top 10 in anything. You might be confusing him with SPP who did test really well.

Wasn't talking about SPS, was talking about Dylan Clarke

excellent to hear that cox has great forward capabilities. its impossible when u dont see them play so was relying on writeups on cox and i got the impression he was an intercept mark type tall which i reckon we are now covered (weiters/plowman). it will be interesting to see if gurusos goes for the kp or another good midfielder.

We currently have 34 on the main list (Byrne included) 2 rookies (Sheehan included) 1 Cat B rookie (Korchek)

The rest depends on how many we take via drafts.
Which split we go with this year. (Last year was 39/5/1)
Whether we delist anyone from here on in.
Whether we pick up any DFA's

All up and as things stand, we have 8 spots open across the main & rookie lists.

JGM another rookie

Is it just me... or does Taranto seem a little one paced?

Doesn't seem like the type of midfielder that would become dominant in AFL.

Just have a feeling Petreski-Seton fits what we're after with #5.
could the iaw appointment be an indicator of our intentions with SPS and be there to help his integration into the club and melbourne. on my limited viewing of these kids i reckon our needs re best placed with one of ainsworth/taranto/sps and then followed by brodie. i dont hate brodie but the others can all kick goals and get their own ball which gives them an additional dimension compared to brodie.

He has great hands, whether forward or back. Sure they will stick to their whiteboard :thumbsu:
