Just remember that Bolts is a massive, massive fan of indigenous footballers.

If SPS is till there at 5 I will not be shocked at all if we take him, extremely skilled/quick/evasive midfielders are as rare as a Cripps in our starting 22

Why I like SPS is he is a genuine midfielder and a very rounded player.
Is flashy, but also cracks in hard to win he's own footy, also seem love too do the hard stuff, applying defencive pressure and chasing and tackling all come very naturally to this kid.
He is one of highest rated prospects to come from junior footy in recent years.
Recruiters have said the footy he played as 16yo was as good as any they'd seen and coming into the year he was considered a likely number 1 pick.
Injuries had a pretty big impact on his year, but he still managed to get on the park and play some pretty solid footy.
If classy ball use is a high priority, we really can't go passed SPS.
Great post! That's the thing a lot of people forget because of his silk. SPS is hard at it and a tough tackler, it's the ability to just keep running and running that is the question.

All 3 players will walk into our Rd1 team SAB. They are ready to go. If they take bit of time to learn, let em learn in the seniors. We have plenty of time and plenty of room in the 1st 22. If it is attitude that keeps them out, then we have picked the wrong one.

Whichever one of these 3 players we get should never pull on a NB's jumper.
Agreed. Is was probably giving SPS a bit of leeway based on his body shape. Nothing else. I did state maybe's when projecting.

Is this v#1 or 98#v2???

Needs a poll, or a poll #2.

Confused,
Adelaide

You're confused?

Try reading through some of your late night posts when sober . . .

:p

Be really interesting next week Cal Towmey is interviewing SPS in the Going Places series.
Just to see what he thinks about moving to Melbourne and also just to see if he is a good kid in general.
I must admit the idea of having Cripps partner up with SPS in our midfield is very appealing.
With Cripps ability to put players in space by hand and SPS evasiveness and kicking skills, it could be a dynamic combo.

Which interstate kid was overlooked by the club for a Vic kid ???

Don't know and honestly think it's not relevant.

I know for a fact that last year there was a specific plan to recruit local guys.

It was between McCarthy and Cripps with us really needing a KPF. you can't call that a fluke.
I may be on my own but I actually don't mind what Rogers. He didn't have any of the freedom that SOS has had and if he had of bought in Laverde instead of Boek then he probably still should have a job.
Still he didn't and needed moving on
Would have got Boek at second pick anyway.

Hmmmm. I think the way the draft fell last year made a "Vic only" philosophy much easier to adhere to. I really hope we aren't limiting ourselves by this type of thinking.

Scary to think how our young midfield would look if we had that philosophy going into the 2013 draft. No doubt there's some very susceptible people out there for the go home factor, and we need to be diligent, but we can't afford to have massive blinkers like that. I really do hope your source is full of shite, most kids would be over the moon to play at a big Melbourne club in the home of football.

JGM could have been taken with the pick after Jack.

SOS took a time out to discuss options and chose to "pass" on that pick and take him up as a rookie instead - mainly because of the "go home" factor.
Crocker was in his thoughts as well.

I like SPS, awesome mover, superb skills, and a very hard worker.

My issue is this:

Is he capable of dominating the midfield? Because for all of his polish, I don't feel he gets the ball enough.

He looks like the kind of player you bring in once the 'base' of the midfield is set.

He does not need to get many possessions if only the 10 to 15 a game are all winners, were's the problem.
The piont is SPS is not your good ordinary player, think Cyril or Wells type impact on games , same ability , tenacity hunt and retrieve ball instincts.
He'll need time to intergrate into the team and get over his injury niggles first half of the season just like any fresh youngster.
However this boy is special and players like he don't come along often.
Go Baggers

I feel like Taranto would be the next pendlebury if he had classier footskills.

Brodie needs to work on both footskills and handballing under pressure.

SPS engine and running capacity.

What can be taught easiest?

****ed if I know! Haha.
Can't wait to know what those who have analysed these kids 1,000 times more than us think.

You can improve all those facets in all of those named. The more difficult task is picking a player that projects to the best player.

For me that is Taranto. A talented basketball player, only committing full-time to AFL in the last year or so. His first preseason was at the start of this year

I think that's why I wanted Milera so bad last year. The class and skills that he and SPS bring to the midfield are hard to find

Tell that to the Dogs - they just lost a premiership defender about to enter the prime of his career.

For pick 35.

I can guarantee you there will be a strong weighting towards local boys - and rightly so.

It is so easy now for players to walk to their club of choice - contracted or uncontracted.

In most cases the clubs get "unders" in return.

Why do that dance if it is avoidable?

IMO it would be really, really dumb.

We may as well fold teams like Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and GWS right now, then.
I still say that it's incumbent upon clubs to create environments for players to want to stay at the club they were drafted into.

Brisbane didn't lose the players it did because they were desperate to come 'home', but for the fact they had a lousy culture.

I am regularly changing my mind on who I'd prefer. At the end of the day all 3 are exciting prospects and we really can't go wrong with any 1 of the 3. All 3 have the skills sets we require. Blokes who can get their own ball as well as having the ability to link up on the outside.
I hope we take 5 players from the draft. Not fussed by any DFA. Don't think any of them add much to what we already have. Much rather grab the unknown. We know with SOS and bolts that they will have great character which will go along way to changing of our culture.
