Not sure if this has been posted already. From the desk of Knightmare who certainly has his finger on the pulse.

Who should they draft?

Will Brodie if available at pick No. 5 can take the pressure of Cripps.
Not sure if Knightmare has his finger on the pulse or his hand on it.

He only mentions Brodie for Carltons midfield need. But for GCS he says Bowes, Brodie, SPS, Taranto could be taken to address their midfield needs. Is he saying that only Brodie can take the pressure of Cripps, and not SPS or Taranto?

Carlton

List needs

1. Star power through midfield to compliment Patrick Cripps - (Carlton were the AFL's worst in winning centre clearances last year at 10.4 per game, less even than Essendon. With Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs the wrong side of 25, the urgency is high)

2. A young ruckman to eventually succeed Matthew Kreuzer (with 24-year-old Daniel Gorringe Carlton's youngest ruckman, someone younger will need to be introduced into the mix with Carlton's ruck division inspiring little confidence and contributing significantly to Carlton's problems at stoppages)

3. Crumbing small forward who can kick 30+ goals in a season and heap on the forward pressure - (since the departures of Eddie Betts and Jeff Garlett, Carlton have lacked a high-quality crumbing small forward. Jarrod Pickett may fill this role, though based on his junior footy, if he does make the grade he is more likely to play a Lewis Jetta type role off half-forward and pushing up onto a wing)

4. A star key forward to build the front half around - (Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay, who were selected early last year may develop, but a star key forward to build around and pair with that young duo, if they both develop, would be optimal)

Draft picks: 5, 25, 48, 63, 66, 70, 81, 99, 117

3 and 4 suggest he does not have his finger on the pulse, at all.

Since when did being on the wrong side of 25 become a thing.
If you're not a senior regular at 25, that could be 7 or 8 years invested in you for shit all, with likely no more than 7 to go. That's a terrible investment for a football club to make.

A draft pick is wasted on an 18 year old ruckman. Most of them don't show much until about 24-25 and they don't really peak until 26+. I don't have any stats to back that up though. I prefer using a rookie spot or trading for ones that have been in the system for a few years already.
It really isn't wasted if they're a good ruck, and there's plenty of examples in the last 5 drafts of both U23 mature age rucks and 18 year olds being picked up a quickly stepping in.

makes the exploits of this 17/18/19yo even more impressive

GWS and Gold Coast still interested in Ainsworth with their first pick.

Top three selections still not settled. Could McCluggage or McGrath slide to us?

Could only see McLuggage sliding, as McGrath won't go past GWS.

Ideal scenario:

Ess- McGrath
GWS- Ainsworth
GC- Bowes (Bris bid)
Bris- SPS
Carl- McLuggage

Get SPP, Drew, Clarke etc with pick ~25 and we've absolutely cleaned up.

Not impossible, unlikely though.

I wouldn't take unnecessary risks either but, I would take calculated ones.

As I put forward earlier, if the talent/quality/character/need between two players is 51/49, yeah then sure......take the local lad.
If though it was 60/40, then I'd be disappointed should my club not have taken that 'risk' because it wasn't prepared to back itself.

Port Adelaide took Ollie Wines just ahead of local lad Sam Mayes, who was touted as a terrific talent. I think they got it right.

And Melbourne took Toumpas, because they thought Wines was too similar a player to Viney.

Another lesson in picking best player available early in the draft

Although sometimes things just don't work out.

Even top 10 picks can fail.

Has to be big Carl..........half around here wouldn't have heard of him.

On the score of drafting young rucks, versus trading for them. If we trade for one, we are only going to get a second or third rate "adequate" guy.
I wouldn't draft one, I would draft two. Make them fight for a spot, rather than being the anointed "next guy". ALA Grundy/Witts, then Smith/Nicholls/Hickey, Hickey/Longer(throw in Pierce and Holmes)....amazing how much quicker they mature if there is competition.
We can take a combination of Goddard, Ladhams, Sweet, Olango, Draper and/or a couple of Vic boys with a ND pick and a rookie pick.
We were rumoured to have "been in to" Ladhams late in the year. He is probably the best credentialed ruck/forward bar the hype boy English.
Two boys and Korcheck going at it on the track rather than having Kreuze and Phillips nursed through the year and not supplying much
mentoring to the kids.

Interesting article on Ladhams in today's Adelaide Advertiser. Might of took his foot of the pedal a bit this year after an impressive year in 2015. Didn't make this years academy squad which shocked him. Quized the SA u/18's coach who put him directly in contact with the swans recruiting bloke. He gave him a whack about not working enough. Hasn't looked back since apparently and has a better understanding about the requirements to become a AFL footballer. Definitely worth a punt on if still available with our 3rd, 4th or 5th pick. Was on par with English this time last year.
Others on here would have a better opinion of him than me so thoughts on Ladhams fellas in the know?

Some similarities with English in how he approaches the game, but without as much straight line speed. Needs to put on a few kgs to be useful at AFL level, whereas English could have an impact up forward from day 1, fitness permitting.

That's one from the vault Thy.

The Saints had some pretty tough nuts back then. Not sure who was more scary - big Carl or Robbie Muir.

Carl was tough and fearsome - Muir was plain mad.

Does he have AFL standard "hold down the ruck" in him over time?

Can't see English making a meaningful contribution in the AFL for at least 3 seasons. He is extremely skinny despite being a year older than the rest of the u18s. He might be gifted games like Daniher who did very little in his first 2 years and was a vastly more talented junior..

Colin Young: "We think English will be the first person drafted from WA. I just think he’s like a Dean Cox and he’ll get picked up early. From there, it’ll be Sam Petrevski-Seton or Logue."

If they are figuring English goes to Freo, then they aren't giving SPS much chance of going at 5.

But maybe clubs really do see English as the next Cox and maybe GWS or GC intend to jump early before Freo.

The next 3 weeks are gonna see a few twists and turns.

In another instance, i could see Brodie going as high as 4 to GC or as low as North at 11 depending on how he interviews with GC.

My power rankings for relevant players at our pick 5.

1. A. McGrath
2. T. Taranto
3. J. Bowes
4. Sam Petrevski-Seton
5. Hugh Mcluggage
6. Jack Scrimshaw
7. William Brodie

All the best SOS.

Yazz seems to be the pick of the crop at 6. Meanwhile, here's the best of Pick 56: Ryan O’Keefe, Andrew Dunkley, Daniel Cross, Daniel Bradshaw and Joel Patfull.
