Hayward has from all reports pushed himself into first round contention, but I'd be stunned if we used pick 5 on a medium forward.

More than happy to consider him at 25 should he still be there, but pick 5 has to be a midfielder I would have thought.

I think the view is that at 185 and with his speed (just over 2.90 for 20) he will rapidly become a goal kicking outside midfielder

He sure is a better mover than most in this draft but I agree in that it may be difficult to pull the trigger on a forward so early in the piece.

I do though would love to know what plans we have for Charlie & Jacob. Charlie into the midfield and Weitering forward? Would that change things?

It's also fair to say that 95% of phantom drafters on this site haven't got the faintest idea about the players they're spruiking or the views of actual recruiters. So the fact that Hayward isn't top 10 in any phantoms shouldn't bother people. The draft is also littered with examples of players who have bolted into the top few late on - Pendlebury, Hill, Oliver, Bontempelli, De Goey. SOS may just think Hayward is better than Taranto or Brodie.

You've got to be blowing smoke up our arse here EP (or someone is blowing smoke up yours); even if you are onto something with character issues for Scrimshaw (and there is zero public evidence of this, as opposed to the usual hints), he still presents less of a risk at 5 than Hayward.




No left foot, and doesn't have enough lateral moves to compensate for it (not horrible agility either, just not enough). Smart player, but he's going to need a lot of work to be a midfielder, and he under pressure he looks an atrocious passer by foot and inconsistent with his technique to the point of failure when slightly off-balance.

I know what you're saying...trying to say...but to be fair there doesn't seem to be any bona-fide stars in the draft other than McCluggage & McGrath.
We only have the odd games to view and YouTube highlights to make our assessments. Recruiters have ever so much more info to work with.

For all we know Hayward may have been playing under duress this year, that won't be there from here on in. Who knows for sure?

Hayward does look a little like WHE and Brett Burton to me. He would want to be getting more of the ball than he currently seems to be getting to be a serious consideration....a real serious one.

Brodie...or Taranto....or maybe SPS....or just maybe Scrimshaw....we thought we had it nailed down. We picked our faves. Put em in an order.

Every year around this time, word comes out about "bolters" who the actual recruiters like as Top 10'ers, not the Phantom Drafters.

As eric said, guys like Pendles, Bont, Oliver, DeGoey were in the teens 3 weeks out by Phantomers.

Keep in mind that what was said was that SPS is the probable pick, not Hayward.

But on Hayward, there might be no chance he is available at #15.

I tend to agree, I tend to think he just had a bit of a 'day out' much like Sidebottom did that year. Hayward might turn into a good player but I'd still be a bit reluctant even with our second pick.

Agreed, if we want to reach for 'upside' should be Scrimshaw.

I think that we give the sources we have on draftees a lot of credence, much of it deserved, but they don't have the access that recruiters do, and frankly if they were so good would they be posting on BF or would they have been headhunted by a club?

I would be more inclined to point the groupthink label to a club in which you can routinely predict who they are going to draft with each pick before other clubs have had a chance to consider and accept/reject these players with their own selections. It seems mighty suspicious if we get exactly who we are rumoured to be into given the uncertainty of the draft.

The worrying thing is the commentators in the first clip saying he is not a big possession winner (they were talking 7-11 per game). Finding the ball is one of the hardest skills to improve as it only gets harder at the higher level.

There are many examples of recruiters looking for something that wasn't there. Conca, Bootsma,Gysberts,Howard, O'Rourke

Also there is a fair chance that Jackson Lee (his opponent in the prelim) is not getting recruited this year. The few times he provided a contest he went to ground but was generally 5m away.

Generally when the expert Carlton recruiters have gone left field and this board has had a bad feeling about the selection it has not worked out. As a result I am not with this lets show blind faith in our recruiters they know more than mug punters.
