Could we?

I mean that would be the BF groupthink assessment. But is it the sort of thing recruiters think is going to happen?

I think that we give the sources we have on draftees a lot of credence, much of it deserved, but they don't have the access that recruiters do, and frankly if they were so good would they be posting on BF or would they have been headhunted by a club?
Here's the thing though, BF groupthink assessment has been bang on more times than the "professional" recruiters at Carlton. Every year I watch us recruit a player that makes me throw up my hands and wonder why we are so stupid. I haven't been wrong yet, although that's not saying much to be honest because our recruiters are almost never right.

I really am sick of this.

I can do reasonably complicated things - self checkouts, exits on freeways, changing the time on the car clock. But I am completely flummoxed with the drafting process - the upgrades, points system, bidding, academy picks, can you trade this pick if you've done that? etc. Really appreciate the info you clowns impart every year regardless that I'll be blithely ignorant of our new boys until they have the sacred navy blue on their backs.

It's certainly from left field if you only consider the Phantom drafters, but it could be argued that Hayward is actually the player with the runs on the board and some of the more fancied prospects are the speculative types with great 'potential'.

Surely he would be recruited as a forward though rather than a midfielder.

Would be dissapointed if we picked a forward in the hope to turn them into a midfielder.

So many times in the past I have heard. Plays HBF/HFF but we think he can make him a midfielder.

Want to know who makes the best midfielders? Midfielders!

If we still want said forward, to play as a forward, then I am all for it... Just don't think getting a player and hoping to turn them into something else is not the way.

Praying that we don't **** this up.

Last year's first 3 picks were pretty much consensus selections and seem to have panned out at this stage, notwithstanding injury hurdles.

Now is not the time for a long-term project player.

Disclaimer: I only watch YouTube highlights.

I had him going in the first round, but not in the top 10. Especially where we are at with our rebuild

Although, we always have to look at this as a whole, our total gets from the draft

For me, I would not select Hayward at 5
totally agree arrow from the clips shown the lad has potential but not for a pick 5. ive always rated performance at the u19's gf/tac gf as being great indicators. on that form i was really impressed with taranto game. he backed that up with great game the week after. to me he ticks all the boxes in that he seems to have an inside/outside game and can kick goals. i was really disappointed with brodies game in the gf however he may have been injured - i just had the impression that he has been ahead of his peers on work rate & professionalism which have boosted his stocks however others kids like taranto/sps will in an afl environment improve and therefore their upside might be larger. also liked the game of a kid called morrison, not suggesting as a first rounder however as a later third rounder would be good - had really good foot skills and run.

I tend to agree, I tend to think he just had a bit of a 'day out' much like Sidebottom did that year. Hayward might turn into a good player but I'd still be a bit reluctant even with our second pick.
I'd have Sidebottom any day, absolute gun and quality person.

i have no idea about him so looked him up in the phantom drafts. here is the overview by knightmare. i dont know knightmares credentials but it makes interesting reading especially for us novices:

24. William Hayward (SA)
Best position:
General forward
Height, weight: 186cm, 76kg
Recruited from: North Adelaide
Plays like: James Sicily
Projected draft range: second round onwards
Rated last month: Unrated
Rationale behind ranking/change of ranking: Has earned his way onto draft board on the back of an outstanding SANFL Under-18 finals series up forward.
Strengths:
- Marking at highest point
- Marking on the lead
- Timing of leads
- One-on-one marking
- Aerial marking
- Vertical leap
- Attacks ball in the air
- Gets front position in marking contests
- Reads drop of ball
- Scoreboard impact
- Genuine No. 1 option in forward 50m
- Football smarts
-Clean at ground level
Weaknesses:
- Unproven outside forward 50m
- Not a big ball winner
- Possible but unclear midfield potential

I respect what EP says, but if BRI don't bid on Bowes, I could see GCS taking SPS. Can't see us passing on Brodie after that. Don't see us taking a fly on a kid who 3 months ago was a nobody either. Happier with a Vic kid also. I reckon on SPS getting homesick at some stage.

also liked the game of a kid called morrison, not suggesting as a first rounder however as a later third rounder would be good - had really good foot skills and run.

Well spotted mate, Morrison is one that I hope goes under the radar a bit and we can add him as a late pick.

I'll be disappointed if what EP says eventuates, not because I don't like EPs contribution but I'd so prefer we weren't leaking these details before an incredibly important draft for us.

Southby nearly made me neck myself 2 drafts ago, let's just go for the proven talent over a considerable period of time....please!!
