I'm more and more convinced we'll take Taranto in 2 weeks time.

I can see him in Navy Blue already.........it works. :)
Just makes sense. Vic boy, can get big numbers in the midfield, tackles well, has okay skills and most importantly kicks goals.

I mean honestly, 4 goals in the all stars game was bloody impressive. My only worry is talks starting to surface that Bowes won't get bid on until later.

SPS definitely gaining traction on the board .

Nek minnit , GC picks him at 4....

Been giving this some thought.

Since SOS took over, we seem to have tightened up on the draft-related leaks. Given Gold Coast have Picks 4, 6, 8 and 10, and will most likely base their draft order around who the clubs in-between their picks are likely to take (ala Carlton taking McKay before Adelaide's pick, knowing they wouldn't take Curnow), I suspect a lot of the rumours filtering out are likely misinformation to hinder GC's planning.

The more players we're linked with, the more likely they are to just take their first preference with 4 rather than playing games.

The SPS stuff may also be a ploy to force GCS to take him earlier.

Clayton loves his talented WA players and if they think he won't last until pick 6 they might opt to take him at 4 if there's no Bowes bid.
Who would he take otherwise?

I agree with all of this.
One thing that stood out to me watching "The journey" part 1, was the dinner Carlton have with their sponsors the night before the draft where they reveal who we are likely taking. Surely that is the leak and where that woman is getting her info from the night before the draft. I really hope they don't give specifics this year.

Who would he take otherwise?

Potentially Brodie as an inside mid, given they'll have access to a few quality outside players with their subsequent picks.

If they think we see pick 5 as SPS > Taranto > Brodie, then by taking SPS first they get both him and Brodie. If instead they took Brodie, they miss out on SPS and probably have to settle for a Taranto or Scrimshaw at Pick 6.

You can push it out further based on who Freo and Sydney want at 7 and 9, and of course it's all dependent on where Bowes attracts a bid.

If, however, we've got 5 or 6 names on our board for that pick, and it's unclear which way we'll go on draft night, Gold Coast may just need to decide which of Brodie or SPS (in this example) they prefer and take the plunge. If we telegraph our intentions too specifically, GC can use that information to weaken our draft and strengthen theirs. If we overload them, or mislead them, then both clubs go in with the intention of picking the best players available at their pick, rather than playing ducks and drakes.

Brodie at pick 4 when no one has bid on Bowes? I don't see it.

These draft games only work if one of the teams refuse to take a certain player. Last year we took McKay even though we rated Curnow higher because we knew that Adelaide wanted McKay and would have passed on Curnow.

Not as cut and dry as "refusing" a certain player, can simply come down to ranking them. Depends how confident a club is on their intel on other recruiters' preferences.

Pickett and SPS in the same team.....

I'd like to see us take Will Brodie at 5 and Jordan Gallucci at 25 but how does everyone see us utilizing picks 48, 63, 66 and 70. I can't see Kerr being there at 48, a lot of opposing supporters are liking him around their second round pick mark. Could Dylan Clarke or Will Drew slide to 48? Kerbatieh at 63? Luke Ryan also could be a slider late.
Just interested to see everyone's realistic wishlist with picks 5 through to 70.

Care to elaborate? Not sure what you think is unlikely about that scenario?
Look at the top 10. GC will be contending with names like McCluggage, Ainsworth, Taranto, Scrimshaw, SPS, Logue, English and then Bowes, who is about the same stature as Brodie and arguably a more complete mid (though perhaps not as much of a bull on the inside).

Combine that with Touk Miller, and that they're hunting Barlow, and I don't see the point of Brodie. He just doesn't have enough about his game on the outside to warrant being a top pick. He can run in a straight line sure, but he doesn't demand the football there, and he doesn't do enough to give himself space to dispose free of pressure on the inside, nor does he dispose well under pressure on the inside.

He's athletic for the position, but otherwise a bit of a battler. If they get a free hit at 4 I see that as the likely death knell for Brodie to GC, because they will get yet another capable clearance mid, likely one who will have a higher rate of contested possessions that lead to clearances than he will at AFL level.

It won't influence our decision, but if Fyfe comes on board next year then SPS over Brodie would be the way to go IMO.

But we can't even predict what will happen in 3 weeks, let alone 12 months. :(
